@Dexcon I'll take on your challenge of describing color red to a blind person to be genuine. :) Particularly as you say no comparison to other NLEs. So, "slick" to me when it comes to Vegas, would be:
1. Unified color themes and backgrounds, fonts and tabs across the whole application and its various windows.
2. Scalable icons and texts
3. High definition, minimalist, stylized icons and buttons
4. Better sizing for the tab-buttons
5. Rounded corners for windows
6. Fading on opening and closing windows
7. Completely modular structure - add/dock whatever windows you need, where ever you'd like
8. Smooth snapping of events in timeline
9. Rounded edges for events
10. Overall, move from Windows XP era to Windows 10. You know what I mean? Or even better, to macOS. :)
Some months ago I was actually planning to draw my own "ideal" looks on Vegas. I gave up when I realize such an exercise would be futile at best here on the forum - to no one's benefit, I don't think. Both because it's not gonna change what the team has in mind already and because the tastes and opinion are so different.
My "slick" would probably be different than yours, but I think we all can agree that Vegas needs some more polish to it's looks. Although it seems many user don't care at all about it. Each to their own.
Anyway, sorry for the off-topic.
On topic, I hope Vegas 18 will change something in the looks department too, even though the most I want them to change and make functional what's in there already.
Keep in mind that such UI updates aren't easy, especially for software designed for older UI's, it requires digging through lots of code and making lots of changes that take time that would be better spent making VEGAS faster and more reliable.
Let's get it modern and rock solid, then we can make it pretty.
I think 18 will change because if it doesn't fix what was promised in 17 and having bought 17 at the end of April I get it free or for a token amount then it will be a version that persuades me that Adobes subscription model is actually makes more financial sense.
Stabilisation doesn't work I had to buy Mercalli
Optical flow is terrible I had to buy Twixtor
Noise reduction - rubbish I bought Neat video.
Vegas Pro 17 crashes on a regular basis and I submit the crash report but I've had nothing back
For the actual amount of use I've got out of 17 I think I should get 18 for free (whether it actually improves the situation of course is not guaranteed).
Like everyone else, I too would love to know what is in VP18 that I do not have in VP17. But I can wait. For the moment, what I do, VP17 works great.
Yes, I have plugins and such, but for me, a "pretty face" overhaul is something that isn't necessary for "me". I just want it to work and be as trouble free as possible.
One man's nice slick interface might be another man's nightmare.
@vkmast You've got that right. I still don't like "hamburger" menu, ugly fat icons added in the last few years. I WOULD like assignable mouse functions, as opposed to fixed.
Would you rather them create a solid foundation to build upon moving forward, or try to shoe-horn a bunch of half-baked new features in that crash every 5 minutes and run at 4fps in 1080p? Other NLE's often make improvements to existing features as part of a new release, so I don't see what you're getting at here... and you only know a handful of features that have been revealed, they've made it clear there are more to come, yet here you are passing judgment.
+1, and AMEN to that bro. BUT -- their track record on stability, rock solid, is, well, not rock solid. But let's see.
I've always hoped that Magix would be more of a true tech partner rather than an underwriter for Gary's ongoing 'project.' Sony dropped the ball there as well.
@john_dennis Yes, oddly enought there was recently a Davinci forum post complaining about how awful the rounded corners looked, and how much better it would be if they were nice clean squares. It was so obvious... to the OP of that thread.
Personally, I couldn't care less.

You can see the change in fashion with the new iphone12, It is all flat sides, sharp edges, with curves eliminated. it is a cyclic change with same design on iphone4. the style seems to be called industrial design.
Any discussion about these areas of personal taste and preference will always end up useless, as we are all different to each other.
But if we get enough people to express their preferences, we get to understand what is the trend, the direction a development should take.
If 9,000 people out of ten thousand will say Final Cut Pro or Resolve looks good, than maybe Vegas should care. Even about the rounded corners. :) If not, they really must offer something else as "compensation" as it is clear that staring 10 hours into an UI that is less inspiring will mean something for most. Which might even translate into subconscious displeasure in working within that environment...
I don't believe in software-design-by-democracy. I think all you get from this is an incoherent mess. Sure, let the dev's know what you like/prefer, but the execution & implementation needs to be done by the makers of the product!
:) Do you believe in surveys and marketing research for producing something that people would be happy with and buy?
That's the whole point. And it's a shame that such a valuable tool as a forum pool it's being seen unnecessary.
Of course the design and execution will be done by the makers! And they should do it by knowing the facts.
That's all, from me, about this. I look forward seeing what Vegas 18 will bring to the table. I am moderately optimistic, I think I am rather desperately hopeful! :)
Data collected without proper experimental design, control groups, and random sampling is misleading and close to useless - whether studying viral epidemics or computer users. :)
The views of a vocal minority on this forum cannot be concluded to represent the Vegas user community as a whole. They might coincide, or not.
UI design. Interesting. I have to be honest with everyone here.... I never EVER considered Vegas as an option, and I've been editing since Amiga/Toaster days back in the way early 90's.
Why I never considered "Sony" Vegas? The UI was ugly. That was the only reason why. A Humble Bundle convinced me (because it was only $20 and some other software tossed in). After a week of using it, I was hooked on the way it edited on the timeline. I bought 15, 16, and 17 Suites. With each version, there was more to like. But geez.... early Vegas... that was some ugly UI to me.
With every new version it becomes harder and harder to evaluate if I really need the "new" version. I will definitely get 18 But I might go on a every other year upgrade. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 18 month development cycle for 19 or even longer - perhaps the rebuild of the total underlying architecture will come at 20. Who knows.
