The USB cable is plugged into the camera and the videos imported directly into a Vegas project. Then they are placed on the timeline. I usually add a audio Track EQ and Track Compressor from Vegas and a noise gate from Reaper. These videos are then edited using mostly cuts.

That's your problem... You need to copy the files onto your hard drive first, the camera's read speed likely isn't fast enough to keep up with what Vegas needs.

Thank you for the comprehensive information @George-Thomas. If Vegas is hanging during editing and so4compoundplug is the decoder in use then you should try disabling it. I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this as it's currently by far the most obvious troubleshooting suggestion for this case.

Now I start understanding why people use macintosh for video editing. I own versions 14 and 16 of Vegas Pro, and they are very unstable in my hands. I can't count on the reasons why it is so. It crashes for whatever reasons you can figure out. At least in my hands, it is impossible to use given the high frequency it crashes (every 5 min or so). My Ctrl+S keyboard marks are being erased

That's your problem... You need to copy the files onto your hard drive first, the camera's read speed likely isn't fast enough to keep up with what Vegas needs.

When you import the files off the camera with Vegas, they get stored on the hard drive.

Once the files are imported with Vegas, they appear in the Explorer. I then drag them to the timeline from there.

But how did you import the clips? Which tool did you use?

We don't talk about accessing imported clips via the Explorer but about importing clips via the Device Explorer (see the screenshot vkmast shows above).

I have disabled it but now Vegas refuses to accept my media file. "An error occurred opening the media file...". I can ignore the error, but the file is left offline.

Download the update that dropped today and see if it helps.

Sorry it didn't work. In many cases that helps (e.g. my Panasonic GH4 footage), but I guess your format may be one that the older compoundplug.dll doesn't support.

Re-enable so4compoundplug and restart. If today's update 5 doesn't help then please consider sharing one or more sample files on a cloud service (such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com) for users here to test on their systems, and to link the developers to.

@NickHope not to pull this off topic, just a quick question/statement. I have never had a problem with GH4 files, can you post what format you need to disable the so4?

Almost all of the Vegas problems I've ever had were instantly cured by using the Windows registry cleaner that's included with the free CCleaner.com software. I now run the registry cleaner every time I update any software on my PC, and any time I have software issues.

I've been using Vegas since version 4 ( back when Sonic Foundry owned it ) and most versions have been pretty solid on my Windows machines. ( with the exception of Vegas Pro 12 and 14, which weren't terrible, but they were not as good as the other versions )

Sorry I posted this to the wrong thread earlier.

New update, new problems. All the video in the project timeline now was previously rendered by Vegas Pro 16. At least I got the options to send debug info the Magix this time.(not that it ever helped in the past.) Usually the application just hangs and no option to send anything.

The Canon HFG10 is an old camera now and its mts files from my Legria (PAL) version use compoundplug.dll with VMS16.

Been running Vegas since v.3. For years I've wondered why/how some folks have so many problems and I have had few, although I've had things get flakey after extended editing sessions and find a reboot solves most issues. But then having started back on two V-decks, a VISCA device (anyone remember that?) and then a DVmaster/Razer I'm still tickled pink at what I can do with my present stuff. So, over many years what has been constant about my setup? My computers have been Dell XPS series, usually with the fastest processor I can afford. Plenty of ram, 16 plus gig. Separate hard drives for video source. I've used both nVidia and Radeon boards, not always the latest and fastest, usually a step or two from the top to keep it financially feasible with the latest reliable drivers. I always have run the latest versions of Windows Pro and used Windows defender for all my virus/malware needs -- never had an invasion but practice safe surfing. I use Sony, iPhone and DJI source files for almost all video. I avoid downloading freeware programs/codecs unless open source and reliable, but still seldom. I run BCC, Vegasaur and a few audio plugins from reliable sources. I go into Windows device manager from time to time and manually go through and check for the latest driver versions for the components that raise the most problems: network drivers, audio and video. I run Vegas 15 at the moment.

@NickHope not to pull this off topic, just a quick question/statement. I have never had a problem with GH4 files, can you post what format you need to disable the so4?

@Eagle Six UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 29.97p [100 Mb/s] MP4 files. If I'm cutting them on the timeline in VP15 (build 416) or VP16 (build 361), with so4compoundplug enabled, I'll get a hang say 3 times a day and need to kill VEGAS with the task manager. If I disable so4compoundplug then the problem goes away.

@EricLNZ Yeah, run-of-the-mill Canon HF-G10 files shouldn't be a problem for the older decoder. I'm guessing it's George's Blackmagic ATEM files that it could not open. If the Canon files can't be opened with so4compoundplug disabled then there's something strange about them or something else strange is happening.

@George-Thomas With your new problems in build 424, try running through the troubleshooting post on stability. Also this related post for rendering problems.
