iLok License?

Ivey-League-Films wrote on 4/12/2020, 4:12 PM

I have a question. I just upgraded from 15 to 17. When I tried to open 17 for the first time, it froze in the middle of loading and asked for an iLok License. My question is this: If I activate an iLok License subscription to get 17 to fully open, will this be required all the time or is this only for the first start-up of the program? I do not want to pay for an iLok monthly subscription just to use a newer version of Vegas Pro 17.

I purchased and downloaded the plain Vegas Pro 17 version.

Was your purchase from the VEGAS Shop on the vegascreativesoftware.com site?

Ivey-League-Films wrote on 4/12/2020, 5:01 PM

It was from the vegascreativesoftware shop, yes

is there an option to ignore using/buying the iLok license?

Ivey-League-Films wrote on 4/12/2020, 5:08 PM

No there was not. When I tried to bypass it, the program closed. I wonder if it was due to one of the plugins like the audio one or something? It wouldn’t say. I ended up activating an iLok license and was able to open it after that, but I am wondering if I have to keep the iLok license subscription active to keep being able to use it.

Possibly. This has not come up on the forum before. Try contacting infoservice@magix.net

@Ivey-League-Films Maybe you're getting the iLok screen because Vegas is trying to make some 3rd party plugin or app (ProTools?) secured with iLok that you already have installed in your system available in Vegas. You might want to go into the Windows app list and see if it's something you don't use anymore or tried out once upon a time, and if so, just uninstall it.

My guess would also be that it's because of a VST plugin that is licensed via iLok. The 2 things I've ever needed iLok for were a Waves demo and a free Softube saturation VST plugin. See part 2 of this: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-vegas-pro-won-t-start-what-can-i-do--104784/

I would also assume a plug-in is trying to load that requires iLok. You could try moving the VST plugs to a folder not normally used for VSTs. If VP opens move the .dll files back in, a few at a time to I.D. the offender

I have to say that you all may be right here and I think your suggested solutions are fantastic ideas. I will begin with removing the VST plugins from their folder and slowly bringing them back in, one at a time, if this happens to me again. Thank you so much for your suggestions.

VEGAS Creative Software does not use iLok for any license management. The problem here must be related to a third party item.

THANK YOU for all who contributed to this thread.

After installing a demo of Source-Connect today (which apparently required a physical iLok which I don't have), Vegas stalled on start-up asking for iLok activation. Removing the 'Source-Connect Link.dll' from the two Steinberg VstPlugins folder solved the problem and I'm back in Vegas now.

I ❤️ you ppl!
