Mosaic Gallery and Parent Child Cropping (Pro vs. MSP)

sakendrick wrote on 10/11/2020, 6:42 AM

I'm a movie studio user contemplating upgrading to Pro.

Has anyone made anything like this Mosaic Photo/Video Gallery?

https://elements.envato.com/photo-gallery-promo-V3PLZS5

Is there a way to do this without moving every single individual video "tile"? Is there a way to pan around a large canvas for example?

I've run into a limitation with parent/children in MSP that if using track motion, I put a child in a parent and that child is outside of the video project bounds, the child video is cropped... so that I when I track motion the parent, and the child comes into view, the part of the video that was outside of the project frame is essentially missing/cut off. I can post a picture if it's easier to explain. I'm pretty sure it's a limitation of the software.

So I can only put children in parents within the video frame space, and then move that parent to a location outside the video frame space. Does this same limitation existing in Vegas Pro? I've read other posts that suggest maybe "Nesting" is something that could help? As I've never used pro, can someone point me to information about what nesting is and how it could help?

Anyways - core question is, what's the easiest way to build something like the template example above? It looks like Vegasaur video wall would help me create the tiles initially, but not the actual panning.

Thanks!

Check the details under the video. It says that is for After Effects CS5.5 and above.

It could be possible do this in Vegas Pro, but it would likely involve creating a master scene in 4K (with the original footage being in 4K), rendering it, and then using the render on the timeline with pan/crop/track motion to create the up/down/zoom in/out movement but keeping in mind that the zoom in shouldn't be more than one quarter of the image size in order to maintain HD quality

Might have to experiment, but within Vegas Pro only environment, I'm going to start doing layout in higher or maximum resolution that can offered within the project - if I remember 8192x8192 - but it depends on your final output resolution and how zoom is needed.

Save it (say 'layoutlarge.veg) - then, in new project, import the previous layoutlarge.veg into timeline (now this is what is called as nested project). since you have larger resolution prepared in previous project - here in new project, you can just do pan&crop event to do the pan-scan movement.

Hope this can give you the overview how the process.

Besides this, VEGAS Effects as part from VEGAS Post Suite can help the motion or 'layout'. VEGAS Effects offers a lot of similarity to After Effects.

Thanks for the suggestions. Going to try the trial for Pro to see if it helps any. I am aware that template is for AE which is why I was posting to see if anyone had created something similar in Vegas --- For this project I don't have time to try to learn AE and Premiere.

I've actually built some of the project by moving each tile independently but it's extremely tedious so if with vegasaur and maybe the nested over-sized project approach I can speed things up, this upgrade may be worth it.

I can't find a comparison anywhere that compares MSP with Vegas Pro - I know more compositing options is a big one. Is the underlying engine any different? MSP video preview is extremely laggy even in draft mode, and I've tried all the tweaks of hidden settings, nothing has helped. I also have very frequent crashes and I have to save every minute or so.

MSP is a trimmed down version of Vegas Pro, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that there may not be any performance improvements with VP18 over MSP. Are your computer's specs up to VP18 minimum/recommended requirements?

System requirements

Operating system: Microsoft® Windows 10 (64-bit)

Processor: 6th Generation Intel Core i5 (or AMD equivalent) or better. 2.5 Ghz and 4 Core minimum. For 4K, 7th Generation Intel Core i7 (or AMD equivalent) or better. 3.0 Ghz and 8 Core minimum.

RAM: 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB recommended; 32 GB recommended for 4K)

Hard drive space: Hard drive space: 1.5 GB hard-disk space for program installation; Solid-state disk (SSD) or high-speed multi-disk RAID for 4K media

NVIDIA

NVIDIA® GeForce GTX or RTX 9XX series or higher with 4GB

AMD/ATI

AMD/ATI® Radeon with 4GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8GB for HDR and 32 bit projects)

Intel

Intel® GPU HD Graphics 530 series or higher

intel i7, 8850 CPU, 2.6Ghz, 2592 MHz, 6 cores, 12 logical processors 32 GB of ram

has an NVidia Quadro P2000

The ultimate project I"m trying to work is only 1080P although some of my source is 4K

It appears the laggy render is still an issue in Vegas Pro, although I haven't adjusted any of the settings yet

On a separate note... I've also installed VegaSaur and can't get the Video Wall to work at all. Hit apply, nothing happens. So kind of back where I started.

You might want to inspect this.

sakendrick wrote on 10/11/2020, 9:46 AM

I managed to get both working... but neither do what I need it to exactly. Perhaps I'll start another thread. Example - I want all my videos in my "mosaic" to be 640x540... (which would be the standard dimensions for a 3x2 grid) neither tool appears to do this. While you can "Crop" to a preset list of aspect ratios in VegaSaur, 640x540 is not one of those... solved this by cropping all images ahead of time, then adjusting project size...

sakendrick wrote on 10/11/2020, 10:16 AM

So just to continue trying to test I created a 3x3 grid saved as a project. Nested that project in a clean new 1920x1080. Every attempt to then pan that nested project crashes vegas pro.

Love the idea of create a large grid project then pan around it, but can't do any panning of the nested project without crashing.

Thanks - can you provide any more detail. I'm very familiar with track motion and parent/children, but not 3d track motion.

I highly recommend you use one of the many templates offered by Vegasaur.com, It will save you dozens or hundreds of hours. I have used many, they are excellent. I think it would be a mistake to try it on your own unless you are a retired graphic artist with nothing else to do. https://vegasaur.com/sony-vegas-templates

Not a retired graphic artist and agree, spent many dozens of hours. I will say that if the features and tools I paid for actually worked as designed, like nested projects, vegasaur video wall, or even just rending (keep getting stuck at 29%), this would not be as bad. I specifically upgraded to Pro and purchased Vegasaur for this purpose and none of the needed features are working. For the time I've put in trying to troubleshoot, I probably would have been done by now. I'm about 90% now done just moving tiles manually through track motion, however, who knows if I'll ever be able to render. Sorry for the frustration - too many hours, to little sleep :)

As for the templates - that's what I was hoping for initially. I don't see anything on vegasaur that does the trick. Maybe journey opener is close but not really what I was after and at this point closer to being finished vs. trying to figure out a template. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now to try to troubleshoot my rendering issues.
