Renaming a file/clip

FoskeyMedia wrote on 9/3/2018, 12:10 PM

I'm in Vegas 13. I have a clip on timeline with the standard name given by the camera. I right click and go to 'Select in Project Media List", From there I right click on the file and select "Rename" (so I can name it something useful). Then Vegas freezes, and I have to shut down the whole thing and reopen the project.

Is this normal? Do I need to rename in Windows Explorer (a pain).

I don't believe that a file that is in use -- i.e., part of an open program -- can be re-named. I think you'll have to close Vegas and then rename the file.

Check the state of this switch:

I successfully rename files with open projects, though I usually close Vegas Pro and point to the new files all at once when I reopen the project.

Adding descriptive names while leaving the camera numbering system maintains the shooting order:

I do it the same way whenever it is necessary. Should work in VP13, if file prevents no other program.

Weird. There was a known bug in VP13 concerning renaming files. But your description is opposite of the bug I encountered. At that time, renaming in the Project Media window worked fine, but renaming in the Explorer window crashed Vegas. But I believe this was only the case in Windows 8.1 .. The bug was fixed in VP14 as far as I know.

John Dennis...Interesting... that's not quite the way I was doing it,...although it will work for now. Vegas also offers a RENAME option a few lines down and I was using that.
Thanks....

OK I Think I found the issue. I was changing the entire name (including extension). When I changed just the name prime it worked fine within Vegas, No need to go outside to Explorer.

Thanks for coming back with that. Some of us were starting to wonder.
