Using Resolve LUTs in Vegas Pro 18 / Sony Vegas Pro 13

SonyVegas wrote on 8/8/2021, 1:44 AM

It's been a while since I upgraded, I previously upgraded to Sony Vegas Pro 13, so I've installed a trial now of Vegas Pro 18. Just on loading it, it already feels somehow busier and less intuitive than the old version. Anyway... I'm trying to quickly decide if it's worth upgrading to 18 for my limited usage (some family video editing such as vacations, etc).

Using the VisionColor plugin for 13, and the built-in LUT filter for 18, I've tried both Cube export options from Resolve (16), but the results I see in Vegas don't look as vibrant or colorful or full as they do when I look at the grade in Resolve. I'm not doing anything fancy in Resolve (I only started trying it so I'm just doing basic adjustments in Resolve from a YouTube tutorial, I'm more advanced in Photoshop and used to use the IWLTBAP LUT Generator to do grading in Photoshop), so I'm wondering if anyone else has a Resolve -> Vegas workflow or any LUT -> Vegas workflow, if you've run into this issue before or might have any suggestions if I'm somehow doing something wrong... any help would be appreciated!

Haven't used VisionColor in years but have exported LUTs for use in Vegas. It works as expected.

Are you sure that Vegas has levels set properly? For video level footage you need to adjust to computer levels (levels Fx studio to computer RGB) or use the SEMW preview levels and click on PC to view the footage properly in Vegas. Resolve does this automatically, as does Vegas Pro 18 if set to 8-bit full in project properties.

@SonyVegas ( ! ) as you're testing with the trial of VEGAS Pro 18, please note that when v.19 comes out some time in August, you most probably won't be able to purchase v.18 through the MAGIX online shop any more. Please note also the current VP 18 + VP 19 offer (valid until August 9). (Your v.13 serial number should be valid for upgrade pricing if it has not been previously used for upgrading.)

Thank you! You were correct RogerS, I had an old Studio/Computer filter in my project for whatever reason, after removing it and checking my project settings as well, the LUT treatment looks much better.

Yes, thanks as well vkmast, that is why I wanted to try Vegas Pro 18 quickly. Unfortunately I found that even from a brand new project, Vegas Pro 18 won't bring up the Render As menu. I tried numerous suggestions that I checked via Google (it seems it's not an uncommon problem in a variety of different Vegas versions), but none of them worked. I suspect it's simply some obscure incompatibility somewhere due to my older system... As you might have guessed that I'm still on Sony Vegas Pro 13, I also still have a system that's pretty old by now (Windows 7 Pro SP1, Intel i7-4770, 16 GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series 2GB). Since I don't plan to upgrade any components of my system until I get a whole new system, that makes Vegas Pro 18 unusable for me at this time, so I guess I'll stick with Sony Vegas Pro 13 for now. Despite my overall specs, Vegas Pro 18 seems to work just great... until I go to the Render As option.

I didn't see an attachment option in the forum, so here is an image of the error: https://i.imgur.com/otGhjg6.png

(Also yes lol, I'm surprised my username was available and I didn't want to spend a lot of time trying to think of one, it would be nice if the forum had just a display name instead, then I would have chosen my first name.)

@SonyVegas I have a system older than your yours (i7-980) and I did a free Win7 to Win10 upgrade to it and it runs much better all around. And is fully compatible with all the recent and past versions of Vegas. Just google "win7 free upgrade to win10" for lots of write-ups on how to get it. But I suggest you upgrade to Win7 SP2 rollup first. Btw, your gpu may be a bigger problem. I wouldn't recommend anything less than an rx470. Not great but they do work and there are many inexpensive used on ebay.

Ahh I didn't realize that you could still do a free upgrade to Windows 10, that's very interesting... My data drives and backups are very organized but I'd need to do some real cleanup on my system drive before looking at an upgrade... It's nice to know it's something I could plan to do and work toward though! Thank you everyone for the timely and helpful advice!
