VEGAS PRO 15 UI Concept Design

I find the "M" and "S" buttons very poor design too, the FX is ok and actually better than the old icon. I will never be able to associate it with "Mute" and "Single", it will always be "Mono" and "Stereo" for me. Colored icons, not too fancy are certainly a must for an efficient work. Even Windows has a speaker symbol for volumen and not a "S" or "V". How about road signs that only have abrivations rather then symbols... how fun and effective would that be.

Still too dark for me. It makes the video preview look like it's washed out with a 1500 Watt light shining in my eyes. I prefer the background to be middle-grey.

I remember when Sound Forge 6 was released. Previously one could pick individual custom colors for almost every UI element, but starting in 6 we could only select palette themes, and many of them were such a narrow range of colors that it was difficult to see. Things like the pitch shift or pan lines were about a 1% purpler blue than a selected waveform, which made them nearly invisible. In version 5 i lightened up the selected waveform color so that lines on top were visible, but in 6 this wasn't possible anymore as the line color changed in a predetermined fashion with the waveform color change.

Honestly, i still find the UI schemes of Win98SE to be the most visible and useful. Every piece of professional software really is incomplete and less than fantastic without a 'Win98 Classic Skin'.

Looks nice and tidy and the darker theme is best for editing in dark post-production rooms. The ability to undock parts should stay, to accomodate different workflows, though....

Where is the Playback FPS counter? RED/GREEN off playback FPS icons are a little AVID, and one of the things I disliked about AVID's playback. Its like not having an RPM meter in your car.

Also where is the Playback quality selector for Draft mode/Best Full. That is one the most used functions in Vegas as an editor. You edit in Draft for speed, and bump to Best Full for CC and preview where needed.

Medium Grey is about as dark as one should go, adding to much background color will start to trick the eye during CC and impact your footage. So Black, White, or 18% Grey is the best. Its a photographic thing. OH wait 18% grey is where the Vegas UI has been forever.

See now, this isn't very nice. I find that too many of the comments here are nonconstructive, small minded, and even mean spirited. I for one would absolutely LOVE to have VEGAS looking like that. Would I make certain adjustments? Sure. But the general direction is GOOD, provided it does not subtract ANY functionality, that is of paramount importance. The sequence tab functionality cannot come soon enough, too. Among other things :)

I'm sure by now that most of us have seen the VEGAS Magazine article that featured a dark skinned Trimmer Window. A sleek, dark interface is coming, folks. It's probably here already.

The detractors must understand that VEGAS PRO needs to look (and be) professional AND s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g. It does not hold (as of yet) an industry standard position, so it can't afford to look like a ghost from the '90s, the way AVID does. NOR SHOULD IT FRIGGING WANT TO. Now. Of course there should be a degree of customizability offered to the user. A darkness slider (like Adobe has) and an icon saturation slider (kind of like the one we have now, but with actual, immediate results) would probably do the trick, I'm thinking. Heck, maybe throw in a legacy-classic option for the likes of Johnny Roy too (but let's not turn VEGAS into Winamp). Yes, I can understand a certain percentage of the die hard VEGAS boys (I'm a die hard VEGAS boy too, btw) like the current, lighter gray. Give them the option, by all means. But fellas, don't stand in the way of progress for this already throat-deep-in-trouble piece of software. Let it evolve, and help with friendly suggestions, not with disbanding comments. Please.

I applaud once again your efforts to make a superb design concept, Mr.Constantin. It's enthusiasm and dedication like this that gives me hope for VEGAS' future, and I do hope MAGIX takes notice, God knows VEGAS needs some help with the visual flair. Maybe a new, non-generic-looking program icon too? Anyway, good job, sir.😀

According to a Vegas dev team member's recent comment, "different options for the interface color/brightness of Vegas 15 --- will not be available yet in Movie Studio 14 --- and a slider is not feasible right now." (They "hope to provide a few options for Vegas 15.") I have found most of the differing comments about the new UI to be constructive. But If the users that do not "love" the new UI are classified as "nonconstructive, small minded, and even mean spirited detractors" (as the writer likes to call them), I for one will not "stand in the way of progress" and will step down when I still can make my own choices and stay with vs. 13.

Come on, vkmast... I am not trying to shut people up. I am merely trying to urge people to see the bigger picture. I am simply a passionale VEGAS oldtimer that does not want this software to fade into obscurity (it has faded enough, don't you think so?)

Please do not step down. VEGAS PRO needs valuable user input now more than ever. I'm not saying people should not express their concerns and their distaste for something. What I am saying is that people should also offer a solution, an alternative, or a well thought out compromise, that (again) is aligned with an understanding of the big picture. And that big picture is that VEGAS PRO needs to compete. And not with the likes of Cyberlink PowerDirector, Corel Video Studio, iMovie, Sony Catalyst (yech), or Pinnacle Studio. But with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut X, Edius and Blackmagic Davinci Resolve. As of right now, VEGAS PRO is the ONLY ONE of ALL the aforementioned NLEs that DOES NOT HAVE a sleek, pretty, modern, easy-on-the-eyes, dark interface. Let's not only allow, but let's HELP VEGAS have the best one it can have.

If you read the comments on the topic, you noticed I (and most posters) do not object to progress as such, but they want a choice. I object to those of differing opinions from yours being called by you as detractors with nonconstructive, small minded, and even mean spirited comments. That's simply not true. Most of those commentators are experienced long-time Vegas users who know what they need and comment accordingly. Do you think they'd comment if they did not care? As for me, it looks like the Movie Studio 14 line will be used to test some of the new UI with no options, which I'm not comfortable with. And I still think that a sleek, pretty, modern, easy-on-the-eyes, dark UI is a personal UE.

...Progress...
I've heard something 'bout staying in the way of progress...

Did PROGRESS give you a sixth finger or third eye or infra-red vision? Lately?

When people are talking about human interfaces - as well as, for example, photo camera bodies - they are absolutely have to keep in mind they are absolutely bound to targeting the human psycho/physiology. Which hardly had noticeably changed through last 10-something-thousand years.

So... PROGRESS...
If it is not a marketologic-re-painting -- it is not much about the wrapper.

Let's redesign sledge hammer - it's sooo waaay unfortunate-looserish outdated!!!

Among a lot of things, i really think that Vegas needs a new design. And i think your design looks awesome. Hopefully Magix will take these comments into consideration.

Would you buy a new faster better car if it still looks like the model they sold ten years ago?

Sorry, but a car is not a "tool" per say. A tractor would be and I am not many would care if it still looked the same but is new and better. When it comes to a tool, functionality does trump beauty.

If There are thirty black and white icons I have to drag and read each one to find the one I want. If the icon I want  is green among the thirty black and white icons I don't have to search or read anything because it is instantaneous from previous usage. Spacing and position of the black and white icons will help a lot. Then your brain memorizes position the same way it does color.

I'm really curious how Magix will take what's good and unique from both VEGAS PRO and their VIDEO ProX software and cross-fertilize (to use a biological term) to improve both programs. Magix like VEGAS has its origins in audio editing and music. I've been a MAGIX user since the early 2000's and have dabbled with VEGAS. But recently I purchased VEGAS PRO 14 for a new video editing computer I ordered, so I want to give it a second look. One thing about MAGIX Movie Edit Pro and Video Pro X - you can edit fast. I have many legacy projects with Magix, but looking forward to being part of the VEGAS community also.

Yes, as long as it still gets the job done.

So Vegas 14 has a 'New Look' Does it help get the job done? NO!!! It makes getting the job done more difficult because it makes it harder for my tired older eyes to see what I want to click on!

So no, I do not want a new look! That is also like moving all the buttons around on a pro video camera. Pros that use them would freak out expecting to place their fingers in familiar places to make things happen with their cameras only to see very WRONG things happen!

One develops a work-flow and gets in a habit of doing things efficiently and proficiently. One does not have time to search all over the screen trying to find things!

Does the "New Look" look cool? Yes it does. Is it helpful in getting the job done? NO!!!

I want a better tool NOT a different looking tool!

Different looking for the sake of different is NOT better!!!

Hi. My opinion: It would be great if users could choose between old Sony Vegas interface and the new one!

At least let people choose between Light-grey / dark grey / black styles.

dimok135 wrote on 2/4/2017, 2:31 AM

And please, add copy-paste option for separate effects like in After Effects! :) Sony Vegas interface always was good. It's better to improve usability in effects, animation timeline and picture transformation (why not to make a picture transform right inside video preview?).

As long as buttons in Vegas are just 16x16 pixels large, which worked fine 10 years ago on lores screens, it will sure become harder nowadays on hires screens, to see what you want to click on. That has nothing to do with the look of the button.
