Video clips showing up with sketchy image or completely black

Aladdin wrote on 7/14/2019, 9:19 AM

Hi

I'm having a relatively new problem. When I insert a video clip which is working just fine if I play it using ordinary software - the clip shows the image mostly washed out. In fact, the video looks like - for all intents and purposes - to be completely black and I cannot see the video. What could have happened and is there any way I can get back to having Movie Studio show me my video clips correctly again?

Attachment attached. You'll see that - with the exception of certain parts of the video that are showing bits and pieces of the image - the rest of the image is completely black. This is happening with all my videos now. The video itself plays just fine in ordinary playing software.

Thanks!

We cannot see what the type of video is, codec, etc
Please show a same picture with ProjectMedia opened and with selected file that is on the timeline now or show us the MediaInfo of that file following this link:https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

To me nothing looks wrong with that file, but we know nothing about your used hardware, maybe is it not suited to play 4K files with high framerate in such an editor, so maybe it is better to use proxyfiles. Switch on that option in Options/Preferences/Video

You also can offer other users a small file of the same videotype to try on their installation, you have to present such on a cloud service like Dropbox.

Thanks. I have that option already selected. I am not sure what you mean by offering other users... This is on my own machine which won't even show up before I render the file into a movie. As soon as I drop the video into the timeline it shows up with the video either almost entire in the dark - or completely in the dark. How would I know if the hardware is causing a problem. It's practically a brand new computer.

Because these kind of files give no problems with me or other users here when your MediaInfo is right, maybe we can try how your type of file works with us.
But therefore we need a short file that is exactly the same as you have to test.
Such a untouched file we can only get when place it on een clodservice frome where we can download it. I presume that you want any kind of help because you ask it on this userforum.
Without exactly know this things: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/ there is no other way we can give help as users.

@j-v Actually the file says it's 1080 not 4k.

@Aladdin Yes uploading a file somewhere for us to try as j-v suggests would help. It looks as though your MS13 is having problems decoding. Problem is MS13 is now a few years old and I no longer have it installed.

Also right click on one of your problem clips and select Properties, then go to the General Tab and scroll down to see which Plug-In is used. Grab a screenshot of the tab and post it here. Example below.

Aladdin wrote on 7/15/2019, 9:44 AM

Thanks for all your help to all those responding. I have uploaded a short clip of 1 minute 30 seconds. I get the exact same thing happening even for this small file. The first frame shows up, but the rest of the line is black. See capture. I don't know what MS13 is or how to disable it. All clips produced using this software - OBS Studio are giving me this problem. All other clips produced with phone camera or other video camera work just fine. Here is the link to the Google Drive where it is shared: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a-ahE0Oq1dXfNgQCAZ_ic2qDUdUILNxe/view?usp=sharing

I could not find the screen you are asking me to do a screenshot of. If I click on the original file (shared on Google Drive) and click Properties and then General Tab - I don't see anything that says Plug In. Please tell me what other information you may need or how to access this info. Thank you again.

The "MS13" referred to above is in fact the MSP 13 software that you are using. And Eric did give you the advice on the screenshot. (Read also here section 7.) Below is that screenshot of the file you shared:

Recommended OBS settings here, see also this.

Thanks vkmast. I will try and fiddle with some of these settings. The two options contradict each other - one saying to use the software setting and the other saying to use the hardware setting... Anyway, I will change to software as a start and see what happens. Looks like there's a lot that could be making it behave as it does and perhaps indeed, MS13 is too old to work with.

Thanks again.

Sadly the problem exists with VMSP16.

EricLNZ wrote on 7/15/2019, 7:50 PM

Oops this gets even more mysterious. Although a mess on the timeline when I play the timeline non stop it's okay in Preview! Well apart from a couple of frames at 49.51 but if I pause I loose the image for a few secs.

Former user wrote on 7/15/2019, 8:56 PM

In Vegas Pro 12, it sometimes plays. Sometimes in plays in VLC but only after letting it run. If I scan to another spot, it gets flaky. The original file has some type of problem.

EricLNZ wrote on 7/15/2019, 9:33 PM

@Aladdin Probably the easiest solution to your problem with your OBS files is to look at the links vkmast gave you at the end of his post. Follow the recommendations and see if that gives your files that work. Let us know how you get on.

Aladdin wrote on 7/16/2019, 12:09 AM

Thank you all. EricLNZ - these are exactly the problems I've had. When it played, I found for the most part it kind of played correctly - and then all of a sudden, the image disappears - just like you said. It's the exact same thing.

I really thank you all for these solutions. It seems like it must be the OBS after all, and I'm just glad it wasn't me doing anything wrong - or that I was suddenly in need of a faster or new computer or similar.

I might try a few things, and if I don't come right, I might consider trying the same file in other video editing software (just to see what's happening with the OBS and if it is not working in general with other video editing software). And if all this doesn't come right... I'll have to consider using other screen video capture software.

What great support here! Thank you all.

Follow up:

I changed two settings in OBS. I changed the output video rate to be 5000 Kbps and I also changed the encoder to be Software (x264). Amazingly it seems to be working now. I can't believe it! I'll carry on with it for future videos, and if I have anything to report about it not working again - I'll let you know. Otherwise this may have been the solution. Amazing.

Again - a great thank you for all your assistance - all who answered!
