@Jonny-B
Did you already tried with deactivated HEVC decoder in Options/Preferences/File I/O?

Thank you. Just tried that and it did improve matters. I went back to a new project and imported the H265 files from scratch. The frame rate on preview was improved but still choppy so I created proxy files. Unfortunately the proxy files play smoothly for a couple of seconds and then the image gets super blocky and pixelated....

What does "Enable Legacy HEVC Decoding" do?

At which preview setting?
To use proxies you need to use f.i. Preview/Auto

Thanks for your feedback. Preview window: 960x540x32 - Preview/Auto. The quality on playback is awful with proxy files but frame rate is smooth. I've just tried downloading DaVinci Resolve free version. Don't know much about the software but I can just drag my 4K HEVC H265 files in - place on the timeline and they preview at high quality with just a single stutter on start play. That's without generating any proxy files. Reading through other comments, others seem to have a similar issue with preview...

You can select preview/full with proxies and you get the full 1080p resolution of the proxy file. If you need the resolution of the original file at any given point (like for making masks), you can switch it back to good or best just long enough to do that. Another option to speed up timeline playback is to temporarily set the project resolution lower than the source media, so like 1080p if editing 4k... then swap it back before you render your project. This speeds things up enough for some folks that they don't even have to use proxies.

@Jonny-B It's quite a way back in this thread but I posted a previous comment showing how I use proxies which Vegas creates. On my system they always come out @ 720p 23.976fps and are only engaged up to Preview-Full. It also shows media substitution with transcodes I created manually and put into another folder. Those can be any res, encode, or frame rate I like and I can edit at Best-Full. The advantage of using proxies is that the final render is done with the original high-res clip automatically. With media substitution, I have to remember to substitute back to the original before rendering or there might be a quality loss.

You might also look into getting the Vegas HOS add-on (by @wwaag) which links the custom transcode into Vegas.

Thanks for all your responses - I'll post back when I've had a play.

It has always been 'the system' that couldn't cope... Last month, after 15 years with Vegas, I bought DaVinci studio, quite a learning curve, and the same system that struggled with Vegas now works quick and flawless. Rendering 4K in HDR takes less time than the duration of the video.

Main cameras Panasonic S5, still using some FZ1000

Windows 11
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 4.20 GHz
GPU NVidia Geforce RTX 2070 super
RAM 32,0 GB

Main disk M2 2 Terabyte, other disks SSD on SATA, some on USB.

@Bruggeling You have Ryzen3700+ rtx2070 & 32GB ram, what component did they blame, I can't conceive how someone would say your system is below spec for Vegas?

If you go to the Resolve forums you'll see former high profile regulars of this forum who also made the change. Resolve's main problem is their edit page. It is the most neglected and non updated area of Resolve 'clunky' is an oft used description, so still can't compete with Vegas for efficiency of editing, but Vegas can't compete performance wise, nor Codec compatibility.

With Vegas 20 Build 136 I'm still experiencing same MXVideoAllocator crash since Vegas 19 Build 643, doesn't repro Vegas 19 Build 550. Happens while importing GoPro Hero 10 5.3k 60FPS H265 footage. My other thread here went dead and my support request got closed while I was gone on vacation. Just filed a new support request with latest details and new crash dump file. Fingers crossed someone is listening and this crash gets fixed in next update .

RogerS schrieb am 26.08.2022 um 05:17 Uhr

I saw an error message also attributed to MXVideoAllocator in 19.643 on one of the main FB Vegas groups.

Does "Automatic Project Collections" handle P2 files where the audio and video files are in separate folders?

Just updated from Vegas Pro 18 and I must say, that for me, everything is working fine. I also use Premiere Pro 22.5, but Vegas is far more intuitive and is much easier to use.

To the programmers and engineers that worked on the Version 20 project... Great job!

On my side, it works as previous release, no major issue (when I enable Legacy AVC decoder because not legacy with my AMD RX 660 give many freezes and crashes).
The only main missing functionality remains the lack of media manager, and I don't understand why this module that was existing doesn't exist anymore. I appreciate the effort of the "automatic project media collection" but it's not enough. I need a true media manager that can be used on all my projects to select in all my rushes the video I need by selecting labels/tags. It's a real pain to work without this kind of functionality: I would like to use already recorded videos but without a library to categorize content of my existing footage, it's very difficult.
Hope that it will come within updates of the 20 releases.

Steve_Rhoden schrieb am 29.08.2022 um 02:52 Uhr

@Mickael-Lacoste I agree with you that a true modern Media Manager would be very good to have as an optional feature. Not sure if this will be added anytime soon, but i would not rule it out, because the Vegas developers are relentless on adding solid and useful features to the Vegas family.

Love V20. Rarely crashes now. Everything is where it needs to be. GPU acceleration. Color correcting. A state of the art interface. Thank you Magix for keeping a great software program alive.

mofobo schrieb am 31.08.2022 um 17:27 Uhr

I'm experiencing general slowdown when using V20 and I've also experienced more crashes in comparison to V19. Using a 3900x with a 3800ti, 64gb Ram (Win11)
Going to stick with V19 for now until things improved. It's a shame too, being a 365 subscriber.
