A few clarifications

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/23/2016, 12:31 PM

Hi everyone,

There has been a lot of discussion in various posts, so I'm hoping to consolidate and clear some things up here. First, the standard upgrade price for VEGAS Pro 14 is $249.

Next, many of you mention that you have not received any email communication from MAGIX. As you might imagine, this is a huge mailing and not all emails can go out simultaneously. As is standard for large mailings, we are dispatching emails in waves, country by country, starting with US earlier this week. Emails should begin arriving in other markets next week. It is also possible that our mailing has landed in your spam folder. Please mark our official email address news@vegas.magix.net as a safe sender.

There has also been worry expressed over the deadline of the current offer, which is September 27. Rest assured that this is not the last chance you will have to purchase an upgrade to VEGAS Pro 14 at this price.

Finally, we have been working to implement the in-application notification system with Sony's support, but the current functionality is still a bit limited. Some of you may have already received notification of offers that way, and communication there will improve as we fully implement the system.

Thanks,

Gary

Thank you.

"the standard upgrade price for VEGAS Pro 14 is $249."

The "reduced price promo through net notify in Vegas, good until Sept 27" for Vegas Pro 14 is $249 as well.

There's the confusion.

NickHope wrote on 9/23/2016, 12:42 PM

And another confusion is that it's available to first-time purchasers, so it's not really an upgrade.

heg wrote on 9/23/2016, 1:37 PM

A year ago... $174.97 (pro) & $139.97(edit)

And back in 2014 when I upgrade to v13  $149.95

So now, like may have said it, doesnt look like an upgrade price...

Yes, saying something like "Historically at SCS the upgrade price for Vegas Pro was 249.95 USD." is fine and probably(maybe) accurate. Historically updates probably had a lot of additions.

The V13 upgrade did not have much in it and the price was a lot lower, 150. There is some logioc in that.

The 249 V14 upgrade price implies significant updates. The community as a whole can voice thier opinion on significance of the update. Has DVDA been changed even one bit beyond MAGIX branding?

Does the V14 update have significant value or is it an money grab from a desperate user base.

Sorry, but like Heg says, it is simply not true that  "Historically at SCS the upgrade price for Vegas Pro was 249.95 USD."  Just not true at all.

I don't know the history myself, but the image Heg posted shows that the normal upgrade prices were $200 for Edit and $250 for regular.  The image shows a limited-time promotion of 30% off ending September 30, 2015.

david-m wrote on 9/23/2016, 2:47 PM

Gary,
Why did Magix overcomplicate the upgrade issue? Every customer should be able to visit the Magix website, enter their most recent Vegas serial number, and receive the appropriate upgrade price. That method works every time.

No customer should have to wait on some mysterious email that may or may not arrive. I didn't even save the email I received, because every company I've dealt with when it comes to software for the past 20 years offered a way to buy it from the website at the upgrade price.

Oh well...doesn't matter, because not only are you mishandling the upgrade process, you've also overpriced it to the point that I'm not even interested.

Holy crap! I take that to mean that the "upgrade" will be even more costly outside of the 'special price' chances. That's a scary thought!

Historically, the lowball upgrade price for Vegas Pro was around $139 to $159. It looks to me like Magix is more targeted at trying to attact new users rather than renew old ones.  That's okay as the updates in this version aren't enough for me to justify the upgrade price. Frankly, I suspected it would be very hard for the Vegas team to do much in the timeframe alotted for this release.  For someone looking to come to Vegas it's a fair enough deal, imho -- especially if you can use the BCC and Mercalli units and need the ProRes support.

Of course the risk is current users drifting off to other platforms, but my guess is most of them are already gone. I think I'll be waiting to see what the future holds.

Thank you Gary for the clarification, even though as an existing user I am far from happy.  Every existing user will have to consider their own situation and whether or not this re-purchase offer represents value to them or not.  For me it currently makes no sense at all, however it would help me evaluate if there was even an approximate roadmap of where Vegas Pro might go over the lifetime of version 14.

To illustrate what I mean, when I upgraded from VP12 to VP13 there were one or two features that were useful (for me it was loudness log) but in hindsight, it was poor value other than that it was the only way to get the subsequent bugfixes that have been crucial for VP13's stability.  Now I am faced with re-purchasing again, which will break e.g. Vegasaur and require additional spend to upgrade that, and yes, I would get Mercalli V4 plugins (would prefer MV4SAL+), yet another copy of DVDA and an "Express" version of Titler even though I have TP3 which presumably is also broken in VP14.

So therefore I will need quite a bit of convincing to pay money to change something that ain't broke, or at least ain't broke enough that it justifies the inevitable pain associated with all new releases.

Gary - is there an upgrade path from Pro to Suite?

Anyone that took advatnage of the mid-summer "Buy 13, get 14" deal, has no upgrade path now to Suite other than doing the full upgrade from their v13 serial number, despite already owning a v14 Pro serial number.

Would be nice if we could just chip in the $200 difference, and call it a day ...

VidMus wrote on 9/23/2016, 4:15 PM

Looking at my records I find the following:

04/25/2014 - $249.90

09/01/2012 - $139.95

10/18/2011 - $139.95

12/01/2010 - $139.95

05/11/2009 - $184.95

09/10/2007 - $134.95

10/01/2006 - $154.95

Average = $163.51

I did not always upgrade soon enough to get the initial lowest price.

The black icons are very hard to see; the renders take much longer, my favorite windows layouts are not there, my favorite render templates are no longer shown as favorites and so on.

The ONLY positives I found is the Cineform files finally read correctly and show as progressive and not interlaced and my 4k videos play at full speed.

Sorry, not enough to upgrade at this time. :(

I have the same problem. I would like to go to 14 suite from 14 pro but when I put in my 14 pro S/N it states it's invalid.

I also checked what Sony charged me for upgrades going back to VP8 and they were all around the $150 mark due to the Sony upgrade discount which lasted for 30 days. So an upgrade price of $249 was not what Sony charged for the first 30 days of each new release.

I guess if I was calling the shots I'd lowball the price to lock in current users.  Especially on the first upgrade. In other words: "make them an offer they can't refuse."

I start with VP8 that I purchased from Amazon were only Vegas Pro, no DVDA.  When I upgrade to VP11 for $139.95 I got VP11+DVDA.

I think the "offer they can not refuse" was exactly the offer every V13 owner was expecting after this post of Magix staff:

And then there was this:

Thank you for your interest in our bundle offer for VEGAS Pro 13 + 14. As you know, VEGAS Pro 14 will be released in September 2016. And we don't think users who are planning an upgrade to VEGAS Pro 13 so close to the new release date should miss out on the exciting new version. So any customers who upgrade to VEGAS Pro 13 between now and July 31st will also get VEGAS 14 for free! Those of you who already use VEGAS Pro 13 will receive a separate upgrade offer in September. Hang tight!

The US$249 (AU$326) does seem to be a mistake. Seems, in line with past upgrades, it should have been US$159. Would have upgraded for a stable product at that price. Still haven't had any communication from Magix about Vegas, did just get a special offer on one of their other products. Can't help but notice that Premiere Pro CC is AU$23 per month - comes out to AU$276 p.a., for those slow at maths. Bye for now, happy to stick with 12, might or might not be back if Vegas 15 improves.

Videoguys (US, not Australia) is offering V14 upgrade for $236.55 with 5% discount using coupon code INSIDER5 making it $224.72. (All USD prices).

I have upgraded Vegas every time since version 7 but am not convinced to upgrade this time.

Perhaps the euphoria over Magix takeover will cease now that we see the dollars. It all boils down to value for money.
