Red Car Stress Test: Render Interlace or Progressive?

Grazie wrote on 7/12/2019, 11:48 PM

Hello Red Car Enthusiasts'!

OK, I think I've not fully understood something fundamental.

In the RCST Render I get a Freeze of VP. One of the Render Templates is Interlace: XDCAM EX HQ 1920x1080-60i, 35 Mbps Render(s) : Why? Why have Progressive Media in a Progressive Veggie and then Render in Interlace? Have I misunderstood something rudimentary? OK, when I create my own a Progresive Template - XDCAM EX HQ 1920x1080-30p, 35 Mbps Render(s) - I get 14 seconds.

Why have an Interlace Template rendering on Progressive Media? Is this to truly Stress the Project & VP? Well, it's stressed-out this Editor! 😬

The other Template, MC AVC Internet HD 1080p Render(s) I get 54 secs.

@Grazie Any word yet on fixing playback as per my suggestion by updating gpu drivers? See my last post in the previous thread. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/feature-request-standardized-4k-test-project--116193/?page=4#ca722298

The Builders have already, as I understand it, given you the latest gpu drivers, if its the Creators one that’s installed then you or they can change it to the Gamers one, which fixed the issue on my laptop and its a slightly later, more recent version.”

Grazie: Just tried changing interlace to progressive for render test & get 16sec.  About 5 sec faster than rendering interlaced.

Had same trouble as you with latest drivers and defaulted to '23.21.13.8813' which was supplied with the card.  This driver also works well with VP14.  Later drivers also cause lock up when trying to 'stop' when playing the timeline.  The nVidia site does not list older drivers.  ie 12 months or so back so limited in choice, so no chance to explorer slightly newer drivers.

Edit: When the test was first set up (days of VP11?) then 1080i would be required for BD's 1920x1080i was preferred to 1280x720p which was also OK for BD's. Hence the interlaced render. My how time flies.

@Former user No, it’s still with the Builders to give me feedback.

Can somebody tell me why the render Template is INTERLACE and not PROGRESSIVE.

Former user wrote on 7/13/2019, 4:12 PM

Maybe ask the builders.

Don,t know but if you realize that this test was made to test 7 ( the regions) new things in VPro 11 maybe says something .
But I'm curious where do you see this?

I don't have version 11 anymore because id not love that version, but when I open it in VPro 14 I see this Progressive project:

@diverG's edit?

Best way to know how you should render is to look at the media properties. Is the media on the timeline interlaced? If so, render interlaced. If not, render progressive. In this case, I'm near 100% certain the media is progressive, so interlacing is actually adding a computational step into the process that isn't needed and therefore slowing down the results unnecessarily. Internet 1080p 29.97 Magix AVC template is usually what folks use IIRC.

@j-v - Sure. I’m not referring to the Project Settings, but the RENDER Testing Template. There are two Templates, and one of them is INTERLACE.

@fr0sty - Sure. However I’m not asking HOW to determine which I should select. I know how to do that. I’m asking WHY is there a Render Template, in the Testing Procedure that is INTERLACE. There are Two sample Templates and one of them is INTERLACE. I’m asking if there is a purpose to inviting a Tester to use this INTERLACE Template.

Grazie wrote on 7/13/2019, 10:43 PM

Maybe ask the builders.

@Former user - Sure, thanks for your feedback. However my Builders of my PC didn’t create the Red Car Test, along with that invitation to Render the Project to INTERLACE. And to reiterate, once I create a PROGRESSIVE Template all is well, and I get a 14 seconds render time. If I leave it INTERLACE the Render freezes VP16.

So, my question remains, why is there an invitation to Render INTERLACE? Is it part of the Stressing?

fr0sty wrote on 7/13/2019, 11:43 PM

Probably just a mistake. There is no reason to.

Yesterday I looked again the PDF of that Test and I saw no instruction to render, only for trying to play that progressive project with the new features for VPro 11.

For me that's a far and almost forgotten history.😉
I have no need to compare with that history of still most interlaced video.

@j-v - Well, @Former usereven provided a helpful "Grazie-Proof" Notepad file inviting me to those particular Templates:

Which I did. So, are there more up to date Template instructions? Why would @Former user supply me with Template instructions that would be counter to getting a decent Template Render outcome, if it should rather have been PROGRESSSIVE insterad of INTERLACE?

j-v wrote on 7/14/2019, 5:35 AM

Sorry, but that notepad text I have not in my original Red Car Benchmark download.

I have only thePDF asking to play the benchmark test looking to the 7 different regions with each a new feature for the new Vegas Pro 11.
Putting your question on the forum for all users I don't get in the case you received that notepad from @Former user, in my opinion such things have to be discussed in private between you two as the other topic has been developping.

@j-v - So far as I can tell @Former user included that Notepad file as part of his download link. Now @j-v did you not read the previous post? In that PDF it clearly shows the Templates https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/red-car-stress-test-render-interlace-or-progressive--116252/#ca722373 Al that @Former user did was to COPY and PASTE that which was in that PDF. That information IS in the Public domain. Please read the PDF and tell me why I shouldn’t have posted that information here?

Putting your question on the forum for all users I don't get in the case you received that notepad from @Former user, in my opinion such things have to be discussed in private between you two as the other topic has been developping.

@j-v Look a little more closely J-V and you’ll see that this small pdf “extract” text that I added is in the original pdf, dated 14th-October-2011. I created this extra small file to make it easier for @Grazie to know what templates to use. Might have helped if it was say highlighted in the original pdf.

To summarise the pdf instructions regarding render templates ... for VP11 ... for AVC use the progressive render template and for XDCAM use the interlaced render template.

I tend to use the equivalent Magix template for AVC, the original is probably available via “internal”. For XDCAM the original template is still available.

Modifying the original Red Car render templates test to just get better results now is really a bit silly, when the problem is probably being caused by driver issues in conjunction with the Win 1903 update.

I have the same freeze problem in Win 1903, but not in 1803, using the same and very latest Nvidia Studio drivers.

@Grazie This is a waste of time ...

OK, when I create my own a Progresive Template - XDCAM EX HQ 1920x1080-30p, 35 Mbps Render(s) - I get 14 seconds.”

These results are not comparable to all of the other testing done since 2011. It may make you feel better but its not addressing the root cause of the issue, probably an incompatibility introduced since Win 1903.

Using the latest Nvidia drivers, either Studio or Gaming I don’t have this freeze problem in Win 1803 on my old PC which hasn’t yet updated to 1903. I do have this problem with my updated laptop and new PC.

I fixed the issue on the laptop by switching to the gaming driver and fixed it on the new PC by switching to Intel for HW Acceleration.

Former user wrote on 7/14/2019, 7:23 AM

@Grazie The issue which you’ve highlighted is good to know, and if maybe some day you can learn how to update the Nvidia drivers (Geoforce Experience is how I do it) then some further progress can be made, on your system.

You've now spread your query over at least three different threads that I know of. I’m not sure that just creating more threads is going to produce any better results, but it certainly makes it harder to keep track of.

If anyone else also finds this a mess i've included these three urls here to help keep up with it ...

@Former user - Yup, and that’s what I did and posted it here.

To summarise the pdf instructions regarding render templates ... for VP11 ... for AVC use the progressive render template and for XDCAM use the interlaced render template.

@Former user So, to answer my original question, in this thread, I should be able to Render INTERLACE, without the requirement to switch to PROGRESSIVE.

Modifying the original Red Car render templates test to just get better results now is really a bit silly, when the problem is being caused by driver issues in conjunction with the Win 1903 update.

@Former user Sure. But it wasn’t just to get “better” results. It was the only I could get ANY result.

I have the same freeze problem in Win 1903, but not in 1803, using the same and very latest Nvidia Studio drivers.

@Grazie This is a waste of time ...

@Former user Agreed. Remind of the Win 1903 and 1803 evidence, or rather what it refers to?

It may make you feel better but its not addressing the root cause of the issue, probably an incompatibility introduced since Win 1903.

@Former user Please remind me?

Using the latest Nvidia drivers, either Studio or Gaming I don’t have this freeze problem in Win 1803 on my old PC which hasn’t yet updated to 1903. I do have this problem with my updated laptop and new PC.

@Former user So that’s fairly clear.

I fixed the issue on the laptop by switching to the gaming driver and fixed it on the new PC by switching to Intel for HW Acceleration.

@Former user I don’t have the option of switching to Intel for HW Acceleration.
