The installer is unable to update VEGAS Pro 17.0 while it is running

I have version 17.0.421 running under Windows 7. When I try to install the new update (June 16, 2020), the installer thinks Vegas Pro is running and gives the message in the title, even after I reboot and download the software from the support site. From watching the Windows task manager, it looks like the installer starts Vegas Pro, then gives the error message. I also tried installing the update from within Vegas Pro 17 and got the same error message, no matter which options (Install Now, Install Later) I choose. How can I get the update installed?

Sorry, I meant to say "The INSTALLER..." not "The installed..."

You already know that WIN 10 is required for Vegas pro 17?

Did you check also this comment (and the whole thread)?

@Glen: this is the main issue here:

VEGAS Pro 17 is not officially compatible with Windows 7. Several potential side effects of running VEGAS Pro 17 on Windows 7 can occur, including what you are seeing. The slow shutdown of VEGAS Pro which is causing this auto-update error is due to a GPU driver problem. No driver is available to fix this problem in Windows 7.

However, if you do want to update to build 452, you can use the direct download link found in this post: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-17-update-5-build-452-vegas-image-vegas-effects-update-3--121144/

Thanks for all the helpful comments. Eager to take advantage of level 17, I decided to chance upgrading from level 16 a few months ago and found that it works okay for the things I'm doing, even though I'm on Win 7. (Win 10 is on the schedule for this summer.) I had tried rebooting and using the direct download before my initial post. However, your comments inspired me to try again, this time more carefully. This time, after rebooting, I did not try to upgrade from within the previous build. I only checked to make sure there were no Vegas background processes running before running the build 452 installer, and the upgrade succeeded.
