VEGAS Movie Studio 15 - General Discussion

I'm not finding MS15 noticeably any slower than MS14 with importing media and creating thumbnails.

It's the opening of projects originally created in MS14 that is slow. About five times as long as with MS14. Resaving in MS15 doesn't make any difference but I find if I switch to another project, which closes my problem project, then switch back it opens quickly this time even faster than MS14!

Just upgraded to VMS 15 Suite from 14 Suite.

Playing with picture-in-picture (potentially very useful). Help describes a rotation control circle or Angle slider, but neither of these appear on my screen. All I can do is scale the window with the four corner points and move it orthogonally.

Also, am I supposed to be able to zoom in using this effect, or do I have to layer it with the crop effect?

EricLNZ wrote on 3/2/2018, 5:01 PM

Did you try this already the other day with new videofiles out of a location with more than 100 FHD files at the same location(map)???.
In that case your VMS 14 must be also very slow😁😁

Hmmm. I see what you mean Cornico. Fresh clips are a problem. The test clips I was using had been used in other projects. I copied over 50 AVCHD from an external HD where I archive them to my PC D drive. With MS15 Explorer window thumbs didn't appear. Adding one to the timeline instantly added it to the Project Media pane with its thumb. But when I tried to add them all to Media Pane MS15 froze on me. With MS14 the thumbs are created immediately in the Explorer pane.

Edit: Had another go and this time was more patient. After around 3 minutes the 50 thumbs appeared all at the same time in the Explorer pane. These are 1080 m2ts files from a Canon HFG10 AVCHD camera, not 4K.

Already commented on. See a few posts above. It appears to be missing. Perhaps it's only available in Vegas Pro? We need comment from Magix to clarify.

EricLNZ, forgive the off-topic, but I love my HFG10 and HFG30!

Is there way to change the duration of all of my still images after I have them loaded on the timeline?  I have 268 photos on the timeline and they all have a duration of 5 seconds.  I want to change the duration to 11 seconds for all 268 photos in one operation.

Yes, those are only pro features.

Thanks for clarification. So it's an error in the Help which needs correcting.

To clarify it's both the Crop fx and Picture In Picture fx Help items which are incorrect. Both mention Angle and Opacity adjustments which aren't available.

An oldie but goodie from Chienworks (MIA?)

Yes, those are only pro features.

Which makes those newly added features even more useless...I will keep using the pan/crop and trackmotion tool, which don't have these restrictions.

Probably only there to satisfy marketing dept as you've got to have something new in each edition!

I find my "favourite" bugs are still there. I realise fixing bugs doesn't create income but now with Magix in charge it would be nice if resources could be allocated to bug fixing rather than pointless "new" features such as these.

vkmast wrote on 3/3/2018, 5:24 AM

Those added features, although "simplified", may in fact help new users to get started with Movie Studio Platinum. From my time on the forum I seem to remember comments regarding P/C and PiP as somewhat "convoluted".

The Manual/ Help files should be corrected of course. While they're at it, they might change "Movie Studio Platinum projects support up to 20 video [and audio] tracks" to "200" as the Product pages correctly state.

EricLNZ wrote on 3/3/2018, 5:34 AM

Unfortunately the new Crop FX will probably cause newcomers problems as the cropped area doesn't automatically fill the screen, and usually users want it to. So presumably they will need to use Pan/Crop or Track motion in addition?

200 tracks is, of course, overkill. But as was once commented it was only done because competitors have large numbers and sometimes even unlimited. How one would manage that number of tracks is mind blowing. My max has been 8 video and five audio once and that was bad enough. Two monitors and VMS's useful F11 to fill the screen with the timeline does help.

Just change the standard still image length from 5 seconds to 11 seconds in the preferences before importing the images on the timeline.

vkmast wrote on 3/3/2018, 5:57 AM

I think he says he has them already on the timeline. A good piece of advice for future projects.

That works.  Thanks for the help.

I'm finding it's not just MS14 project files that are very slow in opening in MS15, new projects created in MS15 are also very slow when reopened in MS15. Comparing similar projects with MS14 and MS15 the difference is around ten times.

My test projects only contain 1080 mts files with AVC and Dolby AC-3. Both MS14 and MS15 use compoundplug.dll with them. I get the impression that MS15 is behaving differently in the way it accesses the files or checks them?

Joe_BW wrote on 3/4/2018, 10:19 AM

I'm in complete agreement with Cornico, Dr Zen and EricLNZ - reporting that VMS15 is way slower than VMS14. In its current slow state importing media and creating thumbnails, the program really is unusable.

I didn't have any huge issues with VMS14 so my main reason for taking the upgrade offer to VMS15 was the hope that GPU accelerated rendering would be of benefit to me. I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti which I thought was one that would give GPU rendering improvements (please correct me if that is wrong) but in fact it now renders a project marginally slower than in VMS14 using identical settings, other than having GPU acceleration enabled! So, a backwards step.

Another frustration is not just the initial slow creation of thumbnails on the timeline, but also when you minimise VMS, or switch to a different application and then switch back, most of the thumbnails on the timeline have now reverted to the solid background colour, and then get created again. This really is useless.

Please will someone from Magix respond to this and explain what you expect to be able to do?

For now, there is no point in using VMS15 until these issues are fixed.

I hate to be the one to say this, but Magix has taken a great, low cost video editor and completely messed things up. I have been very happy with Movie Studio 12 and only upgraded mainly for the multi-cam feature of 14. I also expected better things all round with an upgrade. Instead of more and better things, we got less versatility and worse performance. Wow! Time to take a breathe and re-group, Magix. The program was already there, just make it better where you can and leave the rest alone. Thanks for letting me vent just a bit.

I don't blame you. I purchased but uninstalled 15 after it interfered with 14. I've been able to use 14 for my (relatively, I guess) simlple editing for the last year. I'm gonna try to be optimistic and assume 15 is an investment with the potential to be fixed. At least that way I can (attempt to) keep my sanity.

As you have an Geforce higher than nr. 600, so you have those options but not in the older rendertemplates of VMS 14. You have to look for it in the new Magix AVC codec

Thanks Cornico.... I don't seem to have the same options as you have in VMS15. Although I have "GPU acceleration of video processing" set to my NVIDIA card, you can see there are fewer options under render templates for MAGIX AVC/AA MP4. Do you have any ideas?

I just downloaded and installed new version 15. As per what others have said, it takes a long time to open (over 1 minute), but the worst part, is that when I click File>Open, it immediately crashes. Anyone else see this? I'm hoping that they can reset my trial when the next build comes out. 🙁

Marco. wrote on 3/5/2018, 5:46 AM

I'm seeing exactly same issue EricLNZ described before but until now I was not able to repro a crash here. Maybe it is related to the grafic device used (Intel HD Graphics 520 here).
