When you reinstalled the OS, you have also to reinstall the latest driver of your Radeon video card...

Panander wrote on 9/26/2018, 5:37 PM

Which I had done (I have already stated this) .... in fact it was updated to the newest driver today. No difference.

Perhaps a VMS log file might help to determine what is happening? When I start VMS I see this log file (and others) here:
D:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Movie Studio Platinum\15.0\gpu_video_x64.log

I'm using a GeForce GTX 750 without problems. The first few lines of my gpu_video_x64.log file are:

Hi Ken ..... thanks for your helpful comment.

I had a look and it makes very interesting reading. Bear in mind that this is on a clean install of W10. The previous install of the same OS with the same MS15 version clearly displayed my Radeon card as an option. But now, if you read the following it states it is not compatible. So what happened there then? Further more it appears my i5 CPU isn't compatible either (if you read down) http://lakestudio.co.uk/text/error.txt

Here is an interesting post. It says the latest AMD drivers come with OpenCL 2.0 which doesn't work with HD5xxx and HD6xxx cards. This seems borne out by your MS15 log, which shows OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP installed on your AMD card and the OpenCL 1.2 implementation is done by the CPU and MS15 says it is not compatible. The Intel graphics GPU driver is OpenCL 1.2 which is compatible. Interestingly, the Intel driver also comes with OpenCL 1.2 CPU driver, which (like the AMD driver) is not compatible.

https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/non-gcn-crimson-and-opencl.407531/#post-5284009

The MS15 release notes say it works with AMD driver 11.7 or later. I guess your only option is to try to find an older driver - or upgrade your card :)

Hi Ken ....

er ...... no. The latest version is 16 (on this card). Doesn't work. Found a v15 and it does. So, latest drivers = not good. Time will tell whether this stops the problems though.

Panander wrote on 9/28/2018, 1:59 AM

Well the same problems persist. Blinking video output and then no video output at all plus random program crashes.

I think the AMD v16 drivers are the Crimson drivers which do not include OpenCL support:

https://community.amd.com/thread/192320

But the v15 drivers do, but from what I've read they have issues with AMD Radeon HD5xxx and HD 6xxx series cards. I'm wondering if you can find a much older version of the driver? For example, here is v11.7 driver but it might not be compatible with Windows 10:

https://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/15407/

You can find plenty of other older AMD drivers at the Techspot site.

I also found this little utility that can tell you everything you need to know about OpenCL on your GPU card and even has some nifty demo tools to test it:

Well that is finally it. Wondering if something in my system, even with a clean install was the issue again (you see I am really trying here) I did another clean install. Installed earlier Catalyst drivers and had another go. Only the up to date OS and MS15 - nothing else. Still suffering blinking and blacking out of clips. If I r/click on the offending clip and select "Create Subclip" it solves it. However the problem can return. Worse - I have had 4 attempts at rendering a 32 minute video which takes a while as you know. In each one there are clips not being rendered or only part rendered - it just goes to a black screen. The audio is still there but no video. This is ridiculous.

It isn't as if I haven't tried to get to the bottom of it. Two reinstalls to check my setup is OK cannot be ignored. I have tried rendering with the Radeon, the onboard Intel and with the hardware Off. No difference.

It appears I may have to move the whole thing to a new program to actually get it done. How many wasted hours has this thing cost me?

I will not continue with this awful software which I do happen to like because of what can be done with it. However it is unreliable and I have wasted so much time trying to get it going. So to those that have tried to help - thank you.

(Doesn't anyone from the powers that be ever comment on here?)

Mick, I hope this isn't sacrilege (coming from this happy VMS15 user), but have you considered seeing if the free (!) Davinci Resolve will run on your system? There's a very good intro/tutorial out here too.

I've just made my upgrade purchase for Movie Studio Platinum15. I currently have 14 installed. Will I have an option to keep my version 14 intact? Or, would it be better to upgrade/overwrite my version 14? I have a lot of audio plugins, mostly VSTs up and running. I'm certain 15 can find them, but which option is better in this respect, to get up and going quickly? Any caveats here?

Thanks much!

j-v wrote on 10/14/2018, 3:34 PM

All Vegas versions can be installed together and used together, even at the same time.
Projects of older versions will always open in the newer version, unless plugins are used that not exist in the newer version.

Yes, to remove it you need to manually uninstall it. As j-v indicated they are separate. Until recently I had MS12,13,14 & 15 all installed. Now I'm down to just MS14 and 15.

@frantz-l please read this comment just in case. Did you try to find "Let's Chat" box "during service hours?" Haven't seen those service hours listed, but I've seen the pop-up box appear at least late evening (European time). Don't know if the service has been suspended though.

Upgraded from Movie Studio Platinum 15 Build 146. I wished they'd focused on fixing bugs rather than adding new features.

If I'm really lucky, when I click the icon I can get the interface to show and load the sample project before crashing. Usually I don't even get that far.

BWX232 wrote on 10/27/2018, 4:36 AM

MS 15, build 146

Core i7 6700k, Nvidia GTX1070 8GB DDR5, 32GB DDR4 system ram.

I am getting black and flickering clips under clips that have a jpeg pr png picture on top with alpha textures, especially if I use drop shadow it seems.

Also now trying to render a 16 min 4k (NIVIDA NVENC) video and I keep getting errors half way through saying out of system memory, try closing other programs, etc.. which is ridiculous. I have plenty of system memory and I can check in task manager and it's not even using half of my system memory. Several hundred GB of HD space, etc.

This is a joke. Also constant crashing while editing now. MS14 was actually sort of stable especially compared to 13, but this is ridiculous.

Also NVENC doesn't work AT ALL when trying to render a 30.000 FPS file. Throws up errors. Seems it only works with 29.970 FPS files. Problem is when I convert a 30.000 FPS file to a 29.970 FPS file I get all those black and flickering black clips that wreck the video completely. Also a 16min 4k vid not using NVENC would probably take about 7 hours to render and only would take about 25 min with NVENC. So have to convert to 29.970 really no other option.

And to think I paid for this.. with real money. What a waste. Can i even go back to 14 now? (I "upgraded" to 15).. 15 seems hopelessly and completely broken.

BWX232 wrote on 10/27/2018, 6:59 AM

Well I tried a few more things and somehow got my 4k 29.970 FPS file to render after several unsuccessful attempts. Damn that's frustrating when nothing works for several hours!

Ended up using drop shadows on each individual clip instead of the entire track of pics like I was before. That seemed to help for some reason. Then I switched every single clip in the project to "disable resample" as I noticed some tracks with text and pics had that enabled. Seemed to smooth it out a little. Then I re-saved project.

Then I went in as a last resort and set "dynamic ram preview max ram" to 0 and "max number of rendering threads" to 1. Now that must be some sort of a bug if that is what allowed me to render project without out of memory errors and black frames because what does that have to do with actual rendering anyways? I thought that was settings for editing and video preview. Makes no sense. And I never had to do that before with any project even 4K projects.

Also it was an iphone 7 plus 4k variable frame rate file which VMS in general seems to hate. I did not have to re-encode with handbrake or anything like that before importing to VMS 15. I simply imported and switched project settings to 29.970 from 30.000. No audio sync issues but did fight black frames and flickering frames and had to go back to previous save before I noticed that several times. But then again that happens a lot in VMS15 whiteout messing with FPS and without working with 4K files so I don't think it has anything to do with either of those things. This is a brand new problem the VMS starting with 15! It seems like it has something to do with the GFX card rendering instead of CPU rendering in VMS 14.

Anyways here's the media info for the video file straight out of the iphone:

I have bought Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Suite that drives me crazy. My System

  • ACER V3 772G
  • Win10pro latest Systembuild
  • i7-4702MQ
  • 8 GB RAM
  • intel 4600 Gpu & Nvidia GForce GT 750M 4Gb

The very first installation shows the NVIDIA (NVENC) on my rendering dialog for MXAVC and rendering is without any problem. After switching from gpu accelleration off to Nvidia GT 750 M the NVENC Option is gone forever. Switching back and forth the gpu acc. in preferences is unsuccessfull. Clean uninstall. Same effect. Intel QVC quits with error.

Simultaniously I´ve installed Vegas Pro 16 Trial on the same system. All Rendering NVENC & Intel QVC with gpu acc. on or off is without any hassle.

On a second Partition with the same system I´ve installed both as trial. Both renders problem free.

Secon partition is for business therfore not usable. I need urgent solution. I´ve bought it exclusively for the Nvidia NVENC rendering option.

Yes. The result is the lack of the complete mxavc rendering dialog. VP16 PRO is still full functional.
