And what source of camera/media that you cannot play / open that decides you to install codec pack?

Given the long history of this problem - which others have said they don't experience - a workaround may be to transcode the original footage via HandBrake, Voukoder or the like purely in order to get your footage to work in VP18. Not ideal I know, but ...
