Video Preview Not Working in Second Monitor

NicoV wrote on 11/9/2022, 8:56 AM

I have installed the Vegas Pro 20 (version 214)

Video Preview on External Monitor is not working if I choose the second monitor in Preview Device settings.

The second screen turns black and Vegas Pro crashes after a few seconds.

The same if I open Vegas (user interface) in second monitor with the Video Preview tab.

Before Vegas Pro 20 I was using 15 and there was not such a problem.

My Pc is an Alienware Aurora R12 with 2 Monitors (Samsung 4K)

  • Windows 10.0 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Core(TM) i9-11900KF @ 3.50GHz
  • Physical memory: 65.212,0 MB
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090
  • Display: 3840x2160

@NicoV I'm using VP20 on build 214 and I can't repro what you're seeing.
Is your NVIDIA driver up to date. Check using Help/Check for driver updates.
If it is, you may want to try a fulll reset as described in point 14 here.

BTW. I never use the second monitor option. I have my video preview window over on my second monitor.
Drag the tab downwards, pull it over to the second monitor then resize it.

@NicoV

Working here without issue. Main Monitor: UHD, Secondary: Choice of UHD or FHD.

Make sure that under the Display tab in Preferences that you have BOTH the Use High DPI.... and Use Alternate HighDPI..... settings ticked.

NVIDIA drivers are up to date.

I have tried fully reset

I have dragged the tab of the preview window in the second monitor, and again the same problem!!!

Both settings about High DPI are checked.

Something weird is happening!

It works if I open the project on my first monitor and drag the preview window in the second monitor.

Then I close Vegas and open the project again. It opens the interface on the first monitor and the preview window on the second monitor… and CRASHES!!!

I found the solution in the comments of a YouTube video

I have tried almost every setting in Vegas, updated everything, deleted it, and installed it again. Even tried to restore windows! And every time, the same problem.

The problem is a service called Nahimic. I stopped it, and everything worked fine!

I searched for Nahimic

This is what I found

Nahimic audio software offers an incredible high definition sound technology which boosts the audio and voice performance of your gaming computer.

It was preinstalled on my Dell PC, but after I stopped it, I couldn't find any potential problem with the audio.

And now Vegas is working as it supposed to!

FWIW, my Dell XPS-15 had a consumer Waves audio app preinstalled which caused a 'far from flat' frequency response and a bizarre sounding stereo field. It did not crash the PC but was unwanted just the same. I removed it soon after getting the PC.

Actually it's "Nahimic" (as spelled in your quote). You'll find several forum threads about it. Good that you found the solution.👍

@NicoV - I have been meaning to tell you this but I had the same exact problem. I did what you said as the solution and it worked! Now, I can use my external monitor! Thank you so much for your diligence in finding this solution because I have to use my external monitor to see up-close details. Thanks again! - Debbie

I am glad it helped! I was working for a while with this problem, and it was frustrating!

Thank you, that fixed my problem. I use a monitor (hdmi) as my primary screen and use my laptop screen as my secondary screen. I've been struggling to get my laptop screen to function as the video preview screen unsuccessfully for a month. I didn't know you could simply undock the preview screen from Vegas and drag it over onto the secondary monitor. I'm such a dope.

I don't have Nahimic installed and have never found the fix. I will probably move away from Vegas and have been using it for longer than I can remember... Ran into an issue with Nvidia drivers which Nvidia is trying to figure out. Right now I'm running an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the problem exits...

and the problem exits.

@jeff-tjernagel Is your problem exactly the same as that which Nicov originally posted?

jeff-tjernagel wrote on 1/20/2024, 6:32 PM

Exactly the same. Try to preview to the second monitor and the program is done. As I mentioned I had an issue with the Nvidia RTX 4090 and while Nvidia works the issue picked up the AMD Radeon. I had hoped the different GPU would be resolve it, but nope... I've seen this over the years come and go in Sony Vegas over the different versions. It's like a ghost I never know when it will strike and have never been able to identify the issue.

While I was troubleshooting the issues with the RTX I installed clean versions of both Win10 and Win11 and tried Vegas with the fresh installs, even using the Windows native drivers installed during setup. Issue was still there with Vegas.

@jeff-tjernagel Did you also check the Display Preference setting described above? That's a more common source of problems with 2 or more monitors.

rraud wrote on 1/21/2024, 10:25 AM

The comment is a bit old but.. my $0.02

"my Dell XPS-15 had a consumer Waves audio app preinstalled which "caused a 'far from flat' frequency response and a bizarre sounding stereo field

Same here, the (consumer) Waves audio app was far from 'flat' and the stereo field was bizarre sounding. Impossible to even get a semi-accurate mix. I removed it promptly from my XPS 9550.

Using AMD RX 6700XT with driver 23.12.1 and have zero issues displaying on the second monitor.

All I did was click on "View Preview on External Monitor" and it was there.

In Options>Preferences>Preview Device tab, did you try and test there? Display adapter>Identify Displays? You should see a "1" on your main display, and a "2" on the external (second) monitor.
