Why would I upgrade to Vegas POST ?

xberk wrote on 4/8/2022, 4:54 PM

I keep getting emails from Magix offering me an upgrade to Vegas Post for $100. I already have Vegas Pro 19 and BCC Primatte Studio. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I use Photoshop 7 and PagePlus 9 for graphics and layout. I use iZotope RX5 and iZotope Nectar Elements on nearly every project. If needed, I use Neat Video.

$100 sounds good, but why would I want to take the learning curve on Vegas Post?

Why upgrade?

One reason for some people is that POST (or Hitfilm Pro) does some effects and procedures better than Vegas Pro, and if they are central to your workflow it may be worth it. Having said that, the interface works differently (not surprising - different developers) and just dipping in occasionally may require relearning the interface each time. Hence, using the slightly less powerful tool in VP but learning to use it well and productively may be the better solution.

Secondly, POST does a heap of things that VP can't - integration of 3d models, 3d lighting, virtual cameras with depth of field controls, limited animation, etc. If you need these things (which I do for certain projects) or feel they could add value to your current offerings then POST is a cost-effective way to go. But be warned, going down the rabbit hole of 3d graphics takes you into a whole new world of file types and import protocols that make video and audio wrappers and codices look like child's play. In Vegas, a beginner user can take some video, audio and graphics and have a finished (if imperfect) product in a relatively short time. However in 3d world you are working in a far less intuitive workspace and often taking ages for even an experienced user to produce something acceptable.

In your case @xberk I, for one, would appreciate you spending your time producing more of your excellent videos than you heading off into another world which may give far less return for time invested. There will be plenty of whizz-kids who can produce glitzy 3d effects, but there are very few like you who can produce well-scripted, well-acted artful whimsical videos where the skill of the editing serves the story-telling rather than being the only thing on offer.

@xberk ... Another possibility is to get HitFilm Express - and the best thing is that it's free - https://fxhome.com/product/hitfilm-express

Both HitFilm Express and Vegas Effects are trimmed down 'vanilla' versions of HitFilm Pro (Express much more so than VE), and HitFilm Express currently integrates with Vegas Pro in much the same way that Vegas Effects does. But the current version of HitFilm Express - version 2021.3 - is the last version of HF Express that will integrate with Vegas Pro, that feature is to be removed with the next version which given that its nearly 4 months since the last update, probably isn't that far away.

Perhaps think about getting the current version of HitFilm Express - and did I mention that it's free? - so that you can have it there should you need any of its capabilities in the future. There is also an Express Add-on store - https://fxhome.com/store/hitfilm-express - in which specifc VFX plugins can be purchased if needed. For example, Mocha HitFilm is a very reasonable $49.99 USD.

@Dexcon Do other FXHome products that you may own work in HitFilm Express, like Ignite Keying & Flares, HitFilm Movie Essentials Pack, etc?

Dexcon wrote on 4/9/2022, 12:53 AM

@Photo_G  ... I've only had HitFilm Pro since first getting it (or a version of it) in late 2013 with the then Sony Vegas Pro 12 Suite - so I've not needed to use Express. Unfortunately, I don't know.

I've had a look through HitFilm Express' forum and found this from a HitFilm beta tester mid last year:

Express cannot support third party plug-ins, besides the available Mocha and Boris 3D Objects. Pro can use hundreds of third party, OFX plug ins, including sets from Red Giant, NewBlue, Re: Vision, Boris/Imagineer (including Mocha Pro), and others.

The above from: https://community.fxhome.com/discussion/56692/express-v-s-pro

On Express' current forum, which only goes back about 2 years, doesn't have the question about whether or not Express will accept other FXHome plugins. But a HitFilm Pro / HitFilm Express comparison page probably answers the question: https://fxhome.com/compare-hitfilm, Sadly, Express does not support OFX plugins. Ignite Pro is an OFX plugin package and the Movie Essentials Pack probably is as well. Given that Express doesn't support OFX, the likely answer is no.

@xberk

Why would they remove HF from Vegas Pro? I'm confused. ..

Only my reasoning ... removing the integration between HitFilm Pro and Express into Vegas Pro means that the only way to get that integration in the future will be via Vegas Post. A couple of considerations though - integration with AE is also disappearing with the next update to HFP, and in the middle of last year FXHome was acquired by a fairly new start-up company called ArtList - https://artlist.io/blog/artlist-acquires-fxhome/ - which to date apparently concentrates on the subscription model.

The HitFilm forum on this - https://community.fxhome.com/discussion/56959/the-future-of-fxhome/p4 - is getting a bit frustrated with what the future holds for HitFilm Pro some 9 months after the acquisition. Last year, FXHome had no - none at all - Black Friday offers; Ignite Pro (OFX into NLEs including Vegas Pro) has been withdrawn from sale with advice that it will come back bigger and better than before - but nothing so far.

I'm fairly sure that the Vegas team on this forum has previously assured that Vegas Post will continue into the future notwithstanding the merger, but I get the feeling that the HitFilm/ArtList merger is not panning out all that well for FXHome given that so much seems to be bogged down in a lack of moving forward.

When I open the software, I get the upgrade notice. Image below. Maybe because I have Edit and not Pro? Pro is $80, Post is $180 if I click and follow the upgrade link.

I've always wondered why I get these popups for Vegas Pro 19 since I already own it and could have upgraded to "Pro" instead of "Edit" for less than $80. Maybe to buy a copy for someone else? Gift a copy?
