Why would I upgrade to Vegas POST ?

Thanks! So, if you add Mocha HitFilm to HitFilm Express, it says that it includes "...compositing with 3D camera tracking and planar mask tracking." Ref. https://fxhome.com/store/hitfilm-express

And, on the VEGAS Post comparison page, it lists "3D camera tracking and Detailed motion tracking" under VEGAS Effects features. Ref. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/product-comparison/

Are these essentially the same type of functionality in these programs?

@lan-mLMC Thanks! I grabbed the trial and I'm comparing it to try to see what's what.

Why would I upgrade to Vegas POST ?

@xberk Technical considerations aside I can suggest one good reason - it will help Magix Vegas's revenue 😀

I click SHOW ME MORE, it brings me to : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/index.php?id=11296&L=52&utm_medium=product-newsfeed&utm_source=newsfeed-campaign&utm_campaign=2022_14_VPP19_vpc19_UPS_NF2&phash=59F05KPXlYFt7JtZ

But when I login, it tells me :

... it will help Magix Vegas's revenue

And from a marketing strategy, really good intro-pricing to an upper level product like POST gets you on to the POST 'hamster wheel' so that when it comes time to upgrade to the next version, you'll likely be more inclined to upgrade to POST rather than downgrade the upgrade to the less expensive Edit or Pro version.

In your MAGIX account, what country have you got selected as your country of residence? - it's selected via the globe symbol at the top RH corner of MAGIX's My Account page. Unless it's in the EU (which apparently can't be changed in order to make a MAGIX purchase for VAT/TVA issues) but not currently coded as the US, try changing it to the US and then try the offer link again. Or try a VPN - if you're using Norton 360, a free VPN should be included and selectable. Whether a VPN connection will work is another thing though.

I suggest that potential upgrades (Pro 19 to POST 19) contact infoservice@magix.net with a "pre-sales question" asking for clarification on the pricing and availability for their area.

I suppose though that possible replies may be in line with what user Mindmatter quotes here.

Btw, @xcxz-a do you have a serial number that qualifies for an upgrade pricing (one s/n is valid only for one upgrade)? If you have that legit s/n, you should be eligible at least for the "regular" special upgrade offer ($299 or the price of your area).

Dexcon wrote on 4/10/2022, 7:28 AM

@vkmast  ... I think that the Vegas Pro/POST offer only apples to those already with Vegas Pro 19. I've checked VP16, 17 and 18 and all I get is a pop-up to upgrade to Vegas Pro 19 - but not the VP19 Pro/POST upgrade offer that pops-up with VP19. I'm not even sure that this is an upgrade offer (like VP18 to VP19), to me it seems more like an offer to move up to a higher product level of the same VP version.

I have to admit, I'm still lost on what they mean in the screenshot below. I see the regular Trackers, the same function as HFEx, but I haven't found any "3D camera tracking" options. It seems that they both can just import 3D Camera Tracking Data (*.ma) files. So far, other than the number of included effects and the lack of an editor, I'm not seeing any differences between the two.

I also don't see how to get VE to recognize my other OFX, but I'm still looking around in the program.

@Photo_G

Third party ofx don't show in trial version. At least that was my experience.

But they work in Vegas Effects if you buy it. At least most of them. BCC 3D objects don't show up in Vegas Effects at all.

Photo_G wrote on 4/10/2022, 12:48 PM

@Former user Thanks! You can do that in HF Express too though. I believe I finally see what they mean...in VEGAS Effects, you can add a Motion Track "Behavior" to a Camera object. This particular Behavior is not available in HitFilm Express, even via add-on. It appears to be a HF Pro-only feature that is included in VE.

I've reminded myself that VEGAS Pro 19 has Planar Tracking, and it's the editor, so this may be less of an issue than I originally thought...in any case, Mocha seems to be the best way to handle this kind of thing.

@misohoza Thanks! So, in order to support third-party OFX plugins in HitFilm the Pro version is required but VE supports them on purchase. That's a biggie too, since I have a bunch of plugin effects, but it sounds like my BCC Title Studio won't work in VE, and that also puts a damper on adding Continuum to VE.

So far, it looks like the biggest downside to HFE, beside the number of effects, when comparing the two is the lack of Foundry (HF Pro only) and HF Mocha (HF Express add-on or Pro). To get something similar, I guess I'd need the Continuum Suite in VEGAS (which seems like a bust). So, the options to get some semblance of parity are:

1. Hitfilm Express with the $50.00 HitFilm Mocha add-on (and maybe a few other effects if needed).

2. HitFilm Pro for $349.00, which won't integrate with VP when it's updated (not really a biggie, I guess).

3. VEGAS Post for $100.00 (in the US) which will support OFX plugins, but require a Mocha Pro purchase.

Am I missing anything? I'm leaning toward using HitFilm Express with various add-on as needed (including Mocha), which would also mean that updates are essentially free going forward because the add-on would carry to the new Express version(s) and I can render out for use in VEGAS. It's definitely not a no-brainer but, after studying, it looks like the best option since I can use Vegas Pro for anything needed from my existing plugins (including BCC 3D, Title Studio).

@Photo_G there are many plugins in Boris Continuum 2022 that have Mocha as a part of the Units.

Example, you can find Mocha as a part of Sapphire Lighting and Render (which I have). In Continuum Complete 2022, just looking at some of the Units such as Image Restoration, Match Move, Art Looks, Blur, Lights, etc.. there is Mocha for tracking.

But if you must have Mocha Pro, by all means, wait for Black Friday and get it. I've not a personal need for Mocha Pro, but if I had a need, I have a friend that would handle that for me.

@Reyfox Awesome! If I'm not mistaken, VEGAS Pro users can upgrade to Continuum for $349.99 too (?).

Reyfox wrote on 4/10/2022, 2:45 PM

@Photo_G I can't answer if Vegas Pro users can upgrade to Continuum for that price. The best place to ask is Boris themselves. I've had Continuum Complete for a couple of years now. I don't have to worry about Boris plugin versions clashing with each other. And I get the entire Continuum. Lot's more than I can ever go through.

I wanted to get a newer version Magic Bullet Looks, but the cost now is beyond me and it's subscription. I still have an older version of Looks still working in Vegas, but Boris has stopped me from considering upgrading Looks with their plugins. BCC+Film Stocks is amazing. And what you see in the screen shot from my 4K monitor is about half of the stocks available to add, tweak, and save as custom if you like. I have to say, Boris Continuum Complete has been the best plugin I've purchased. And the upgrade price (around Black Friday), is outstanding.

Former user wrote on 4/10/2022, 4:12 PM

@Photo_G Mocha Pro is great, I've never been impressed by any of the tracking features in editing programs so as soon as i got Mocha i stopped using anything else, I use it for tracking but also for just general masking, there's a good Remove & Stabilization feature + other bits, I bought the standalone version too just because i liked it,

As @Reyfox says Mocha is in quite a few of the Continuum filters, ones that need tracking like a stage light etc, will move the added effect, often it's as a version called Pixel chooser which has Mocha built in, that's used for masking areas you don't want the effect to be, A simple example is it's in Gaussian Blur you can track & blur/pixelate someones face with ease, Mocha itself works fine & is quite fast but it can seriously slow down Vegas on my PC, playback & render time.

If you want track & attach an added text or jpeg png onto a video in Vegas you'd have to get Mocha Pro separately, the one in Continuum only works with those filters/fx's it's included in.

Everything BCC & BCC+ on here is Continuum, roughly 300. (Optics, Silhouette, Sapphire (S_filters) & Mocha Pro are different packages.)

If you can't get a good deal ask on the little chat window bottom right of Boris's page, Neal in Boston helped me spend lots of Money 🤦‍♂️😂🤸‍♂️😂

There's lots of videos on their site, the tend to favour Adobe tho, but 95% of the videos can be translated to Vegas https://borisfx.com/

& if you haven't got it Particle Illusion is free, you can spend hrs playing with that, when it's open go to Help & download the free emitters pack https://borisfx.com/products/particle-illusion/

> it lists "3D camera tracking"

This is somewhat disingenuous. Vegas Effects does not do 3D camera tracking and solving, It supports importing 3D camera tracking data from other products (in .fbx format)

Vegas Post 22.0 Build 239
Boris FX Continuum for OFX 2025 Build 18.0.1.303 - 74

Dexcon wrote on 4/11/2022, 5:48 AM

@MikeS  ... I wonder if the reference to 3D camera tracking is really a reference to exporting FBX Camera Data. In POST's product webpage - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-post/ - after clicking Show More under the 'Discover More VEGAS Effects' section, there is at the bottom of that section an outline about 'FBX camera data' and a short video shows that Vegas Effects can to a 3D camera track but only for export to FBX for usage in other non-Vegas products.

Thus under the Vegas Effects features under the POST listing on Vegas' Comparison webpage - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/product-comparison/#productMenu - the Vegas Effects feature of '3D camera tracking' really should be worded something like '3D camera tracking for FBX export'. As you say, the current wording indeed is somewhat disingenuous in that '3D camera tracking' implies a broader usage as would be commonly understood in the industry (including anybody experienced with BCC VFX in recent years) rather than the limited use that is actually the case in Vegas Effects.
