importing video from OBS

ikkuranus wrote on 12/4/2023, 11:38 PM

When I try to import a video that was recorded using OBS, it seems more often than not that it has various problems such as no audio, many missing frames, or random slow-downs in parts of said recording. When viewing those videos in other software they play back just fine.

Are there some settings in OBS that would make the video files it produces more compatible with Vegas 21 pro? I don't care about my existing videos as I can remake them but I do need a way to produce videos that are compatible.

Please share the settings you've been using.

In general AVC in a MP4 container works well. Limit the keyframe interval to 1 second worth of frames for better performance. If you capture MKV, etc., remux for use in VEGAS.

Please note: There is an Upload file button on the bar above the Comment box that you can use to upload images direct to your post/comment instead of redirecting to another website.

I see you are using mkv recording. That doesn't work well instantly. Suggested to record as MP4.

You should try to remux the mkv into mp4 via OBS

@ikkuranus Here are the settings I've been using in the latest v30 OBS update on my laptop w/4k display:

If you're capturing game output, you probably want to capture at a double rate like 50 or 59.94 fps, but those are harder to edit. If you don't have a 4k monitor, you should use a capture frame size that matches it. My laptop has an Nvidia gpu, so I choose Nvenc encoding. But if that interferes with game performance, there are other choices; ffmpeg native x264 is more cpu but is always available. My laptop also gives OBS a Quicksync (qsv) hardware encoding option. In any event, OBS captured video needs to be remuxed to edit it in Vegas.

That did the trick. Thank you.

For the last 6 months best practice has been to record in fragmented mp4 and then rewrapping to mp4, the problem with recording to mkv and rewrapping to mp4 is that is causes variable frame rate, dropped frames and also as reported by the maker of the acclaimed happy otter tools, reduced playback performance and increased encoding times. The problem with recording straight to mp4 is file corruption

Vegas community helper family I need you adopt this procedure as educators you should be teaching best practice and that means learning new things.

@Former user Are there any other important settings for OBS in addition to that for use in VEGAS?
