Sony Vegas 12.0 Used to work, but I got a better PC and 18.0 freezes

Rika wrote on 12/2/2020, 11:06 PM

I am a fairly new video editor, and my partner and I put our money together to get 18.0, but it continually freezes, and refuses to update (Downloads the update, then freezes when trying to install). I have restarted my PC, updated my drivers, as well as a small host of other troubleshooting inside of Sony Vegas Property/ Settings, and as well as my PC's settings and properties as well.

I was wondering if I could downgrade to 12.0 again, since I don't know how to transfer it from my old PC to my new one (I had a student license for 12.0), and for 18.0 I think I bought the one that takes a year to pay off.

Please let me know, as I got this entire setup for video editing, and image editing, and if I cannot use 18.0 for more than 5 minutes for my large projects which worked fine on my old PC on Vegas Pro 12.0 (That PC unfortunately has other issues, not related to Sony/ Magix).

I would rather not refund the product, or downgrade if there is a simple solution, this started happening a few months ago, a month or two after I got Sony Vegas 18.0. I think there was an update, and ever since it never seemed to work properly.

Thank you, and have a nice day.

UPDATE: (December 4th, 2020)
-I fixed the issue, I had to set all my Options/Preferences to Default, apparently 32 rendering threads fixes everything, I thought it was supposed to be 12 to match my CPU. So far, it is rendering flawlessly with only some black flashing and flickering I can probably iron out.-

Never mind, crashes randomly, just less often now.

You could install both on the same system. Log in to your Magix account and there should be a link to download 12 with the serial #.

For 18, you really do want to get into the latest patch (373). If it isn't installing through Vegas, just download it directly. There is a link here. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-18-update-2-build-373--124912/

Before installing make sure Vegas is closed.

After installing, check the graphics driver update under the help menu and get on the latest video card drivers.

If after these updates you still have crashes, post exactly what the issue is when it crashes (what time of file, what Fx added, etc.)

I am on version 334, I will do the update through the link you sent me, let it download overnight (I have rather slow internet).

Also, the crashes happen nearly randomly, but most often when I am pressing spacebar to watch the preview, even in low quality, but not always, sometimes the exact type of crash happens just from reeling through my footage, especially on any clips that are set in reverse. Also, my Sony Vegas 12.0 is no longer accessible except on my old PC as is, since I lost all access to it when I lost access to my old student email account, but I could always repurchase I suppose if the rest of these steps do not work out.

Will post tomorrow either way on the state of the issue, thank you very much for responding. :)

Hi Rika, I think you can access Vegas 12 from your Magix account so you can redownload if needed. If you can't log in maybe Magix can help. If you have the serial # somewhere you should be fine.

For crashes with 18 I see the same thing when the computer can't keep up with the clips. Maybe for reversed footage try to right click and "create proxy file" to ensure smoother playback.

A warning about 3000 series cards. According to a tech reviewer and user reports here they don't work with VegasPro18 and other versions, until the software is updated to work with the new cards. Magix haven't said when or if that will happen, or even that know there is a problem with the cards. Now that affordable 3060ti cards have been released there will be many more disappointed Vegas customers, so lets hope they're about to surprise us with an update that fixes this

@Rika @set

I have a machine with Vegas Pro 9-13 installed. This morning, I started Vegas Pro 12-770 and got the following result:

All other Vegas Pro versions still work.

I went to my Magix account and did not find Vegas Pro 12 registered, though I have a valid serial number and the program has been installed and running (able to run) on this hardware platform for many years. After re-installing with a valid serial number, I go the same result. I suspect a change to Windows 10 and/or the Magix license validation process might be a possible cause of this phenomenon.

@john_dennis as with @j-v, no issue with Win 10 H laptop ( 2004 -19041) or older desktop Win 10 Pro (1903-18362). I'm sure you have considered the "installation count" (see end of item 9 here).

(Btw, I and some others IIRC never got VP 10 64bit working since a few years ago)

And of course we care 🙂.

john_dennis wrote on 12/3/2020, 11:32 AM

@vkmast @j-v

Vegas Pro 12 has never been a problem on this machine for me, either, since I activated it and DVD Architect on 2012-10-12. Today, I did not find either registration in My Products on the Magix site. When I tried to Register A Product for Vegas 12, I was informed that the serial number was already used. Well, Yeah!

I suspect something fell through the cracks on the Magix server.

Edit:

I sent a message to Magix Support to add those products manually since I don't seem to be able to accomplish that task.

vkmast wrote on 12/3/2020, 11:49 AM

@john_dennis if you have the time or inclination to do so, you might try and discuss this with Online live chat (advice here section 6). Can't promise anything, but maybe worth asking.

john_dennis wrote on 12/3/2020, 1:08 PM

@vkmast

I chat with Eric and got the license assigned to my current email address. It was registered to an old one. I still have the problem of Vegas 12 "Not Responding", but I should be doing something more useful, today.

Welcome to the world of Vegas. Vegas 12 worked perfectly. I upgraded to 15, then 17, then 18 and it has been three years of hell. I7 7700 and an AMD 3700...doesn't matter, crashes everywhere at all times. Just watching plain video in the time line. Read all about it here.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/multiple-crashing-and-bugs-with-vegas-18-build-373--125367/#ca782191

I'll try a new AMD 4800H and if it is the same I am going to have to do more than move onto Premiere. If a new laptop fixes it - I guess MAGIX cant be bothered making sure lower end specced machines work.

With all the hacking going on, maybe someone at Unit 8200 is having some fun with German software? Side channel attack the graphics card...load in screen recording malware....who knows. I have considered all options and nothing makes sense. The problems seem random over all sets of hardware.

Nothing to do with German. The same team of SCS from the former Sony Creative software in the US is making Vegas Pro and Movie Studio software.

No issue with the .mkv remux, since it becomes encoded into .MP4 files anyway. I have the same issue when editing with .jpg or .png files, so it is not a file format issue. Just had another crash, though I lasted 15 minutes this time editing, which is a long time. I was sifting through some of the video layers I am rotoscoping, and it froze yet again. :/ I can still move my cursor and such, but the video refuses to play in the preview window, while the scroll selector doesn't respond to my clicking, but yet the audio still plays on as if nothing is wrong, then it greys out, then the program freezes, and crashes with no error dialogue box or error message or such, which it used to on my old PC whenever it froze, on a heavy project I was trying to force it to render above its capabilities.

Sony Vegas, costing such a high premium should be more than capable of handling these simple edits I am doing, especially on this much newer software compared to what I was using. I just grew up and learned on Sony Vegas since a child, as well as Magix Music Maker (The old 100 or 300 dollar version for WIndows 97 or XP I think), and know that the tools and quality is there, but as of lately, I have had nothing but problems recently. The game drivers are not for Sony Vegas, they are for NVidia, for gaming, but I updated them regardless, as I try to keep all my drivers updated.

I have never heard of a Studio Driver, did you mean the settings of OBS Studio? As in the Video Export settings?

RogerS wrote on 12/3/2020, 10:56 PM

Studio drivers are for recent NVIDIA graphics cards and optimized for stability with applications like Magix Vegas Pro.
