Magix, will there be an upgrade offer?

Upgrade pricing seems to me to be a major marketing mistake.  The Madison guys and their Magix counterparts really should reconsider their strategy on this.  Wanting Vegas to continue to be developed is one thing but taking advantage of the loyal user-base is something else in my book.  Unless they make some corrections, I won't be investing further in Vegas and I have been loyal since version 3.

Im glad I bought two VP13 + 14 boxes with different emails when Magix offered at $199, I was a long time Movie Studio 11 user and always wanted the pro version but there is no way I could paid $599 for it, I haven't received any VP 14 serials from Magix tho, but even without the free upgrade Magix was offering at that time, a genuine version of VP13 for $199 totally worth it for me, I can't believe some people missed this deal it was there for two months.

With respect Donald, I'd have happily bought it early if I thought it was for existing 13 users. Completely understand that Magix needs to recoup their investment and might wish to reward early adopters, but the lack of clarity was unfortunate.

It was leaked, many of us did not get it personally. And as someone said today, why would we pay twice for the same version?

igniz-krizalid wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:19 PM

I would have bought the VP13 for $199, but I already have this version. Why do I need another? It does not make sense.

I want to develop Vegas, so long buying each new version. It's not enough? It turns out that you need to buy twice the same version, or pay a higher price. Regardless of the past (certificate SCVU).

you didn't see it this way, you buy the upgrade for $199 and also get a free copy of VP 13 with it

That is the way of marketing. How many of you see that new cable suscribers get better deals than existing?  The whole idea is to bring in new users and purchasers. They hope the deals they offer are enough to keep the old users, but a company can only grow with new users. Many people were actually suggesting, before Magix purchased Vegas, that we should all upgrade even if we didn't need to in order to keep Vegas going. Now everybody wants it for free or a "fair price". You will find that other NLEs on par with Vegas are far more expensive than even the regular asking price. Of course, I can't and am not trying to convince you to think my way. I for one cannot personally afford to upgrade. I am on Version 12 and it is working for me and I don't see anything in 14 that adds much value for me. From what I read here, other than some stability issues, which I am not suffering in V12, there is not much change. I am going to wait to see what Magic does once they get Vegas fully integrated in their company. Then I will see if there is a value added.

henry-williams wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:29 PM

we were explicitly told to wait for a new offer for existing 13 users. That's what bothers me now we find out it's worse.

vkmast wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:32 PM

Donald, it will be the market that decides if the price/performance is right as you say yourself.

Former user wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:33 PM

Here is what I have seen in the past. When a new version comes out, there is an upgrade price. This is a price for existing customers and some jump on it right away. And then  a few days to a week or so later, there is a "special upgrade price for a limited time only." I don't have a crystal ball so I don't know what will happen, but I have seen this type of outrage with EVERY vegas update.

prairiedogpics wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:34 PM

Your argument makes no sense, DonaldT. If anything, Magix should be going out of their way to sweeten the pot for previous V13 users. Maybe they still will...but they better hurry. They can bring the hammer down price-wise after they have brought along the loyal user base into the fold. God help us if we are now comparing Magix to cable companies...

Former user wrote on 9/21/2016, 4:38 PM

Business is business. You may not agree, but this is not a new company. Magix has been around a long time. I have never purchased from them so I don't know their marketing strategy, but new users/ subscribers are almost always offered better deals than existing. If you don't like comparing to cable companies, look at phone companies or insurance companies or even lawn care companies. New customers always get discounts. Loyalty in business is becoming rare.

Well, I do concur with your last post, sadly. I'm still old school...

I haven't been with Sony Creative Software long, I'm a relative newbee.  I have SMS12P, SMS13P, and SVP13.  However they are the most recent (to reflect a trend) and none of them came with a better price for new customers than the upgrade price, as offered from Sony.  Of course, what Sony offered, Magix has no obligation, but Sony established the trend in pricing both new and upgrades.  Cable companies, phone companies, insurance and lawn care marketing is far from apples-to-apples comparison.  If I had been using Vega Pro for as long as many of you others I would probably be pissed at this offer, and being in business many year I know business is business, both good and bad!

But I do agree Donald, I'm not trying to convince you of my opinion.  If Magix holds with this offer, my feeble power is to purchase or not.  I'm only one person/user, but I do have exciting and usable options, such as Resolve 12.5 to migrate to.  I'm not a captive user, I don't need Adobe, Avid, or a Mac (at least not yet!!!!).  I can do without Vegas if the business practices of pricing do not suit me.  😂

Best Regards......George

I've bought Vegas Pro upgrades every time since at least v8 so I DO deserve a better deal than some johnny come lately who has contributed nothing to Vegas development in the past. If the v14 upgrade was a huge step up then Magix might have some excuse for charging more for it but it isn't and they have not. Pro-res support is about as good as it gets. Not all of us need it. Low end NLE's have had HEVC support for awhile now so it's a basic necessity not some unique feature. Still no updates to GPU support which would significantly improve rendering speeds for many. The FX add-on's are great for new users who don't already own them. Many of us have already invested lots of cash on Vegas FX over the years so once again we gain very little that's new. This upgrade is about as exciting as the v13 one which was also a let down.

Maybe it's fine playing marketing games with some cheap app where brand loyalty is transient and new customers are its lifeblood but with expensive "pro" products that kind of "bleed them dry and then dump them" marketing is fatal. In such a crowded pro market brand loyalty is important.

Sony upgrade deals lasted a lot longer than this one and were in line with previous deals. I followed the Vegas forums for years and very few complained about these upgrade deals because Sony was so consistent with them. The few complaints I did see were usually from new users who had bought the old version a few months before the new release and had no experience of the Vegas release time frame.

Just my guess, but I think that $199/249/349 pricing is just a newsletter promotion, and not an upgrade offer for users of Vegas Pro 13.  For one thing, it seems anyone can take advantage of the offer.  And for another, the offer is only good until Sept. 27.  One week is way too short of an upgrade offer.  And finally, the prices are too high for that to be an upgrade price.  Magix should clear all of this up for us very soon.

Eagle Six wrote on 9/21/2016, 8:06 PM

@balazer.....That's what I have been trying to keep some faith in.  There are some good improvements.  The list is long because it includes a lot of fixes, but those I think should be consider an update, not an upgrade.

+1.   Makes sense.  Actually, now that I think about it, a lot of what you have said in the past about Vegas makes sense.  I am fairly certain you are right.

@henry-williams This is precisely what I was also told and am still waiting for. If someone from Magix tells me to check my spam/junk mail folder, I'm going to lose my zen very quickly.

I am also still waiting for my first email ever from Magix! I have invested in every version of Vegas Pro and Movie Studio Platinum since versions 9.

Waiting for Godot is exhausting...

I can't believe some people missed this deal it was there for two months.

I assumed that the $199 deal for [VP13-upgrade + VP14] would require an existing licence for VP12 or earlier, and I suppose many others also assumed that. That's how software upgrades usually work. If I had known that a previous licence was not required I would have purchased a 2nd copy at that price.

If you read the page carefully, it stated that if you buy Vegas pro 13 at $199 you will get Vegas pro 14 when is released in September, "2 programs for a limited time offer"or something like that, so I quickly grabbed two copies myself, still waiting for VP 14 serials tho.

It was the use of the word "upgrade" that misled me.

henry-williams wrote on 9/22/2016, 4:06 AM

@Dr Zen, I've had an email from sony informing me of the sale and an email from Magix telling me they bought it, but nothing else apart from the newsletter I signed up for seperately. I really hope they haven't botched this launch as badly as Apple when they swtiched from Final Cut 7 to X. Lots of us quit using Macs over that! ;)

IMPORTANT

Before anyone upgrading from a previous version spends $199 for VP14 Edit, $249 for VP14 Pro, or $349 for VP14 Suite, get a quote via https://support2.magix.com/customer/vegas/upgrade . It seems like the price might be cheaper there (e.g. $50 cheaper ) depending on what product your existing serial number is for.

EDIT: Be careful! The upgrades there are showing VP13, not VP14, so it's safest not to upgrade there until we get clarification from MAGIX.
