Is your purpose to display at best HD quality for viewing by itself, or for inclusion in a project with existing HD source, such as for YouTube?

For current project, I need to upscale the SD videos and upload them to YouTube as is to be viewed by itself.

However, I am also interested to know both answers for future reference.

I was not aware that Vegas Pro 15 has a built-in upscaler! How to do that in Vegas? Would you please elaborate?

There is lots of interest in software upscaling to force YouTube to play at a higher bitrate. Whether this trick actually overcomes the losses from the upscaling itself seems a bit iffy from the few tests I've seen.

On a level playing field, hardware (player) upscaling wins.

This upscaler as Video FX ("Smart Upscale") was introduced in Vegas Pro 14. You should apply this FX as Media FX. If used as Event FX be sure to set it before Pan/Crop.

I'm using AviSynth script SimpleSlugUpscale with my own cmd-helper for upscaling + deinterlacing. Unfortunately, the setup is quite complicated, however it's only one time job I like the results.
