can't preview after rendering in Vegas Movie Studio 15

Recently I found that, while I can preview just fine before rendering, after rendering attempting to preview pops up "An error occurred during playback. The request is not enabled for this device."

This started within the past several weeks. I've tried different codecs and different project profiles, changed the sound device among the options listed in Vegas's settings, and I still get the same error.

Thanks - I've read them. This issue seems to be present in many versions of Vegas, going back quite a few years but I have not seen a fix or even a specific acknowledgement of the issue from Magix. I hope someone will correct me if I've missed something.

I can't manage a workflow where I have to quit & restart every time I render a sequence. It's a shame - I've preferred Vegas to Premiere for a few years now, but it's hard to justify investing in the next version.

Which audio driver is selected in "Options/Preferences/Audio Device"?

Also, never have another audio application open at the same time as Vegas.

My ritual is to relaunch or reboot before and after rendering to flush the cache and reset the drivers.

If you are minimizing Vegas during rendering, that "may" add to the problem if Vegas relinquishes driver control after rendering

I've tried all three available: Microsoft Sound Mapper, Direct Sound Surround Mapper, and Windows Classic Wave Driver. It gives me the same behavior each time: preview works as expected until I render, then I get the error message.

I can't say I never had Audacity or Music maker open, or a video player - note that before this issue I generally kept VLC or Media Player open while working in Vegas and never had a problem. I've run some tests since reading your post and made sure every other application was closed (like in the old days when we'd shut everything down to burn a CD). I still get the error.

I generally don't minimize Vegas - the render window comes to the front and keeps me from doing much with Vegas itself. Haven't had a need - until now - to restart after every render. That would impact my workflow to the point where I think I'd need to switch to another NLE.

If this is a recent development, you need to figure out what has changed.

windows update?

new hardware installed?

New Plugins? (some plugins use the video card and may not be releasing after render)

Like I said, if it worked before, them something has changed.

Thanks for all your input. After stepping backward through the last month or two, uninstalling programs, codecs, drivers, etc. including taking Vegas off and reinstalling it twice, with no change in the issue, I decided to try the Windows 10 reset feature. I chose the option that keeps your data, but wipes out every program.

A fresh reinstall of Windows (and half a day reinstalling things) and Vegas 15 MSP is again working as expected. I still don't know why preview was breaking after a render, but this did resolve my problem.
