This should be required reading by those the spend all their time searching from their chairs in front of the computer for confirmation bias....

A worthy reminder that we don't know more than we actually know. And at this age I have already forgotten much of what I knew. That's why I use online search engines incl. the "Find..." search here despite its shortcomings.

Yes, 'confirmation bias,' and the related Rosenthal Effect, are big, bad impediments to factual learning on the internet and in classrooms. I spent quarter century trying to teach through and around the fallacies. Unfortunately, intellectually gifted learners are often the most likely to fall into the self-validation trap.

Whenever a student boasted "I know all about ________!," they always got a "special" test for their weekly assessment; it seemed to take the wind right out of their sails when they inevitably got an "F." Of course, I always gave them the opportunity to take their makeup test with a form of the same test their classmates took. 😏

I survived this forum for twenty years by testing almost every conjecture, or citing peer-reviewed articles, most of which just draw blank stares or outright aggression.

@Musicvid kudos to you for your survival skills in navigating any user forum for such a long time!

User forums are filled with people who know everything except how to solve their problem. With suggestions from people who have been around the software for a long time, in addition to being an active member of the forum in problem solving, to see possible solutions rejected for some nebulous reason escapes me.

"What is the Dunning-Kruger Effect?

The Dunning-Kruger effect effect occurs when a person’s lack of knowledge and skills in a certain area cause them to overestimate their own competence. By contrast, this effect also causes those who excel in a given area to think the task is simple for everyone, and underestimate their relative abilities as well."

  • See how quickly these discussions can turn into a schoolyard brawl? It's almost inevitable, unless everyone is aware.
