Greetings - Movie Files

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I'm glad to join this community and look forward to learning alot from all of you. I am new to video and primarily a home studio musician. I was looking to add a  video dimension to my songs when posting on You Tube. I made a song inspired by the movie Gladiator and would like to get clips of the movie to use. I need help to find movie files to use for Gladiator and other movies for future projects. Any suggestions on how to achieve this would be appriciated. Also, is it legal to use (copyrighted)(Gladiator) clips on you tube? (this is not for commercial sale or use)

Thank you for all your help, Rob Chenevert

You need to obtain permission from the movie producers first. Adapting commercial content for your own use is risky behavior.

Yes, both the proprietors and YouTube can. quite rightly, be very fussy about copyright.

Yes and it hurts me to see mv's hexagon half-empty. Luckily his "checkered past" is still more readily available on the forum archive. This forum would be empty by more than half without him.

robert-cRob, if you're researching this subject, be sure to check out the concept of "derivative works", which can make it OK to use copyrighted material in some circumstances. For example if you do something significantly different and creative with the clips.

On YouTube you might find that a video with copyrighted content just gets automatically blocked or taken down, if it matches content that the copyright owner has registered on the YouTube Content ID system. All mine are registered there and the system has so far blocked about 1000 infringements. Also note that the YouTube system these days mirrors the USA DMCA system. If your video gets taken down but you're really determined to follow an appeal through, there is a good chance you will finally win because ulitmately the copyright owner will actually have to file an expensive lawsuit to stop the material being reinstated. But it's a risky business if you're not convinced you have the rights.

Thanks for the info Nick, I will indeed research this and appreciate the direction you've given me.

Just ask first-- the worst they can do is say "no."

Playing footsie through YouTube's content system is risky because you never know who's on the other end. OTOH, if you've asked AND you've given proper credit AND they like your adaptation, they might leave it up with ads. The risk comes with having something taken down. Two strikes and you're out was my impression.

Another risk is predatory frivolous claims of ownership. Their only purpose is extortion, and it can take years to clean up through normal channels.

Is there any trick to embedding video on these posts?

@vkmast,

Believe me, 'tis better that the glass remain half empty for now, as I have sold my home of 28 years and am moving to my little condo in the sky...
