Issue with Formats and Files

J-W wrote on 9/1/2018, 12:55 PM

Now that i finally got my software working and have had some time to work with it, i am running into a few major issues.

1. Is there no .TOD support ? I thought i read there was before i bought product. I use a JVC that uses only .TOD and I am unable to import these files. Is there a plugin i need to install ?

2. When i edit a 11gb project and try to export it to make a dvd to play on my tv, the file sizes are HUGE. for it to be a mpeg2 its 31gb, to export to HDV 720@24f its over 23gb ( this is what it was shot in) . if in AVCHD its over 30gb . Why are the file sizes almost 3x the origanal size ? theres no effects, no transitions, just straight up raw video . And the video output quality is horrible. It took me over 7hrs to render a 480p 11GB project. Any help would be appreciated.

My Rig:

Win7 64x Pro

Xeon X5675 Liquid cooled

24GB Ram

Nvidia gtx 1070

Try renaming .TOD to .MPG

If that doesn't work, there are a few free tod/mod converters out there.

Look at getting a new camcorder soon!

Thank you. I am to fomiliar with the renaming of the .tod to .mpg. I have over 6TB of raw video files that i want to archive to disk and have no intention on renaming or converting all of it. My 10 year old version of pinnacle can import these files natively with no issues, I dont see why VMS cant. I dont use the camcorder anymore, these days i use my Nikon DSLR.

Thanks for the Link. I will give that a try. :)

If you are trying to make DVD videos of these files, you cannot render to HDV or AVCHD. DVD is MPEG2 only at 720 x 480 (NTSC).

Just gave it a try and it works. Thank you. You just saved me from a major headache. Now if I can only figure out why when i export my project, the file sizes are 3x larger.

Thanks. I know dvd is native 720x480. I was trying a few different file types to see what the best quality/size i could fit on a DL DVD. I am taking 15-20 video files and making them into one file to export to be burned to disk. Or at least that is the plan to archive files. What im trying to do is get about 90-120min on a 8.5gb DVD without much loss of quality. I can always compress it when i rip to disk.

I guess what im not understanding is:

If i start with 11GB of video files, and make them into one video file of the same exact format, why is it 3x larger when i render it ? and takes over 7hrs to render?I haven't changed it format, and its not re-encoding the files.

File is 1440x1080x12@29.9fps. I set project to same settings and render at those setting, and the 11gb i started with renders to over 30gb ? Am i missing something? thanks.

A Video DVD will only take MPEG2. Don't try other formats. Are you trying to make a Video DVD or a DATA DVD?

File size is determined by 2 things. Bitrate and length. If you need to make it smaller, you have to change something, in this case, probably bitrate.

tnx david, i will try to play around with the bitrate and see how that goes. Is there anywhere in the window/time line that gives you an estimated render size of whats in the timeline?

No. But you can select bitrate with math. There are some bitrate calculators out there to make it easier.

Bitrate (Mbps) x Time (Sec) x .125 = File Size (MB).

A standard DVD will fit 4350 MB program material.

You must also allow room for audio, menu media, and subtitles, etc.
