Movie Studio 13 isn't using GPU to accelerate.

I use the 64 bit version of Movie Studio 13. I discovered the option "GPU acceleration of video processing" not too long ago, and I thought it would speed up the rendering process. Despite enabling this option by having it set on my GPU instead of "Off", I didn't notice much GPU usage. I use MSI Afterburner to monitor hardware usage, and despite all 8 cores of my CPU being used to almost 100%, my GPU usage was at 2-3%. Is there another option that's limiting Movie Studio 13's access to my GPU, or is it working as intended?

Specs:

Windows 8.1 64 bit

2x4GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM

Videos being processed from and exported to a 2TB 5400RPM Green Drive, but my OS is on a 120GB SSD

FX-8350 at 4GHz

MSI R9 290

I would appreciate any suggestions at what I'm doing wrong or any bottlenecks that I may not be aware of. Thanks in advance!

What format are you rendering? If it's MainConcept AVC/MVC or Sony AVC/MVC then you can switch GPU acceleration on or off in "Encode mode" in the custom settings. See #4 in this post. Other render formats cannot use GPU acceleration. I would have thought "GPU acceleration of video processing" would speed up rendering anyway, but maybe it doesn't, or maybe only if your video includes GPU-accelerated FX etc..

If you please, GPU will do relatively little to assist a powerful modern cpu. You didn't mention what yours is.

The old SCS KB page on "GPU Acceleration explained"

https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5172/~/gpu-acceleration-explained

Cannot get the link to work. Googling GPU acceleration explained + Vegas should give you the page.

Or go to SCS site, Support, Knowledgebase, Search 5172.

MAGIX is (developing?) similar here

http://www.magix.com/gb/  go to Support, Technical support,  Patches and FAQ has the link.

edit 09/07/2016: Linking seems to have got fixing, see https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/forum-feature-requests-bug-reports--103297/?page=last#ca637578
