Movie Studio Platinum version 17 crashes with MP4 and MOV files

savu-savulescu wrote on 5/6/2020, 6:24 AM

Just updated Movie Studio Platinum to version 17. The software is unusable because it crashes as soon as I attempt to load a video clip in MOV or MP4 format -- but it does not crash if the clip is in MTS format

Your comment is totally useless. All the previous versions of Movie Studio Platinum, and every single decent video editing software, are able to load MP4 and MOV files. The issue has NOTHING to do with deprecated features -- it's just a bug that the Vegas engineers should address. Have fun (but on my end it is NOT funny not being able to use software I paid for).

On the contrary it may be that QT is needed to open your MP4 and MOV files, in a similar manner to earlier versions of VMS.

Have you tried enabling QT?

OK, I delete it.😄

Of course it does NOT work. And, by the way, the ability to load and process MP4 and MOV files should NEVER, EVER be included in "deprecated features". The software just has a bug, as simple as that. So, folr the time being, I just went back to the version 16 build 175. Waste of time and waste of money:(

On  5/21/2020 3:59 PM I submitted another ticket, in a long series of tickets, about the Movie Studio Platinum version 17 which I had purchased a couple of days earlier and had kept crashing each time I would want to render a video. Since this faulty new version of Movie Studio Platinum is hopeless I’ve deleted it from my computer and asked MAGIX either to send me a fix or to refund my AmEx credit card. That was three weeks ago. To this day, I still haven't heard from MAGIX support in reply to my Ticket#2020052217003066. Wake up, ladies and gentlemen, your deafening silence is NOT the proper way to treat loyal customers.

The standard Support advice: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/support/article/revoke-order-return-right-of-withdrawal--1515/. If you haven't got any response from Support, email shop@magix.net with your details as per here https://www.magix.com/int/terms-and-conditions/.

Your ticket is dated May 22, 2020.

savu-savulescu wrote on 6/7/2020, 11:53 AM

That's right. It's been more than two weeks I've been waiting for a reply. The "standard support advice" is useless because it only provides for cancellations within two weeks after purchase. I gave my money to MAGIX in full confidence, which is why I've been waiting for them to solve the problem. The lack of customer support is a systemic problem at MAGXI, which might explain why the Amazon ratings of Vegas software are going down.

vkmast wrote on 6/7/2020, 12:34 PM

Another (probably) useless link for you to peruse re rendering while waiting for the refund.

Thanks, your a nice guy, but your advice didn't help. I already tried the .NET Framework 3.5. thing, it's installed and activated -- but Movie Studio Platinum 17 still crashes. I wonder if there's someone, ANYONE, at Vegas/Magix reading these posts:(

Musicvid wrote on 6/10/2020, 9:47 AM

I already tried the .NET Framework 3.5. thing,

.NET Framework 4.0 is required for Movie Studio 17. It's included on the installation disc or from Microsoft.

It's fine to have many .NET versions at one time. Your applications simply pick the ones they need.

savu-savulescu wrote on 6/10/2020, 2:56 PM

No, it doesn't work. It's very frustrating that MAGIX doesn't answer my requests for support. My last resource is to call American Express, cancel the transaction and ask for the money back.

Shame on MAGIX!

OK I just went thru exactly same nightmare with Movie Studio 17 Platinum.

I have it installed on i7 Laptop and it worked right away without any major problems. Video files, pics all could be dropped on timeline and edited as intended.

As soon as I tried to install program on my desktop with i7 processor and Intel graphics 4000 Z77A chip-set, program would start up OK. But as soon as I click on any video file MOV or MP4 and try to drag it onto time line from file explorer or click on any vide file in Movie Studio explorer window, program crashes immediately. It would only work if I was to load JPG pic files!

I went through nightmare reinstalling windows, multiple reinstall of movie studio and result was same. As it mentioned above, Depreciated features MOV support had nothing to do with this issue. It made no difference one way or the other.

I also have Nvidia video card and I removed it from PC uninstalled all NVIDIA drivers, using only built in INTEL graphics- SAME RESULT! ANY video file would crash the Movie Studio, but same file would load on LAPTOP! no issues at all.

So finally I found what was causing immediate crash on desktop PC.

IT WAS SETTING IN PREFERENCES CALLED < FILE I/O>

Wheather I had NVIDIA card installed in PC or NOT, FILE IO was set to INTEL QSV.

I changed it to NVIDIA NVDEC Basic, and magic!!! When Dropping MP4 file for 100th time, Movie studio MAGIX CODEC activation window oped and confirmed codec activation, everything works without issues. Same happened for MOV files. After CODEC activation, all works fine.

So the issue I had seem to do with FILE IO Intel hardware and/or Driver loaded by Movie stidio. It has some sort of fatal issue with some configurations.

Hope this helps to someone!

Thank you!!! Sad and disappointing that all of the clever Vegas folks couldn't figure that out. Also pathetic that they don't know that quicktime is not supported in win 10:

"Can I install QuickTime on Windows 10?

Apple QuickTime is not officially available for Windows 10, as Apple stopped support for Windows back in January 2016. While QuickTime is not supported officially anymore, it is still possible to install QuickTime on devices running Windows 10 or older versions of Windows.May 15, 2017"

vkmast wrote on 8/27/2020, 3:19 AM

they don't know

"Pathetic"? Ever seen the Options > Preferences > Deprecated Features tabs in e.g. VEGAS Pro 18 and VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum (System reqs. Win 10 OS)? "These [Deprecated] features are no longer supported and may be removed from the application in a future version. To use the feature, select its checkbox below." The list includes the QuickTime plugin.

kevin-m wrote on 9/16/2020, 9:29 PM

The "solutions'" on this post are utterly useless, and a complete waste of time. It is clear that "Vegas" is not interested in providing any support, relying on the forums to do their work for them, for free. While I commend the many well-intentioned users of this forum who only want to help their fellow users, clearly 'Vegas' chooses to ignore their client's technical issues, placing "Vegas" in the "trailer trash" category of NLE solutions. Sad and disappointing. Vegas has dropped to the basement of editing tools. Please, someone, prove me wrong.

@Trb30 @savu-savulescu @kevin-m

Ganging up on your peer users is not going to lead you to solutions, if in fact that is what you are seeking here. We don't work for Magix, so just can it.

@savu-savulescu As the topic-starter, If you will start at the beginning, and post the required file properties, someone may be able to help. We are not being paid, so your patience is not only appreciated, it is necessary.

Great ideas and each setting helps. Wanted to put this update for future users that have the same problem. Even after changing the settings, some MOV files could not be added and would not play. Download VLC Media Player. Click Media button on top left, go to CONVERT / SAVE. Add the MOV video that is giving you problems, then click Convert/Save on the bottom. Now pick a destination in the bottom field. Click Start. Wait till its done, there is a progress timer. It still saves as MOV, however I believe it puts it in a MP4 format package that now Movie Studio can read. Hope this helps...worked great for me. There are many options on this conversion I have not played with yet.

Have A Quality Day

Hi there @Trb30, you described the exact scenario i'm struggling with but i can't figure out your fix. I'm Movie Studio 14, and in the preferences section, and there are several tabs and none of them do I see anything about Codec. I know you're using a different version but if you can direct me to where you found that preference or what tab it might be under or anything else, I would really really appreciate it.

Thanks!
