@John-Steers Can you upgrade from Movie Studio 16 Platinum to MS 16 Suite, have you been given that option or would you be upgrading to the new MS which is Magix not Vegas?, they're completely different programs deceptively. so beware,
All extra plugins etc. you buy will work in either of the new Platinum or Suite as suites tend to be the main program + another 1 or 2 programs/plugins, unless you want the added extras it's often not worth the upgrade, the main program will be the same
The comparison on the new Magix version is not noticeable, the two do all the same things,
IIRC, VMS 16 Suite did add some third-party (NewBlueFX) plugins compared to VMS 16 Platinum. The issue is that you cannot purchase any VEGAS Movie Studio versions from MAGIX any more. If you're lucky, you may still find legal copies from reliable online third-party sellers.
As above said, the currently available Movie Studio 2022 (and earlier 18) products are totally different products from MAGIX. If you consider that program, be sure to test with the free trial first to avoid disappointment. (You might want to read the links re MS 2022 in this comment.)
I'd suggest you consider upgrading to VEGAS Edit 19 or VEGAS Pro 19. Again, trial first.
Thanks guys. I was actually offered a really good price for the older MS 16 Suite, hoping the addons might help a novice such as me at least a little bit. I do understand the issues with Magix 18 and up looking like Vegas but not at all the same. It was pretty exiting/weird for a while, but glad Vegas did ultimately move forward with their own 19.
So you are contemplating purchasing another older version, not upgrading.
There is no indication that the bundled effects would register or be usable; Vegas Movie Studio 16 reached its EOL on May 7, 2020. If you want guidance on that, you can contact New Blue support here:

As per vkmast's advice - 'you may still find legal copies from reliable online third-party sellers'. It would be wise to make sure that your 'really good price' is from one of the aforementioned. A 'really good price' can often fall into a price 'too good to be true' category - which could well be a scam. Caveat emptor.
Rather than update a discontinued product, please take into account vkmast's suggestions for other going forward options.
Is there a benefit in upgrading to 16 Suite? Will it help me create (find & test) better transitions and text options?
Here is what I see in VMS16 Platinum:
Compare this with what you have.
Perhaps someone else can indicate if there are more.
With Magix Movie Studio 2022 Suite which is the same as Movie Edit Pro Premium 2022 (MMS Platinum = MEP Plus), you get a whole lot more content, but only after purchase, so you can't see it all in the trial version. There is a few GB of content plus Travel Maps to be downloaded that include what is shown here:
To see what Travel Maps does, go here and scroll down to Travel Maps and watch the video.
For transitions, here is what you get:
There are 8 series, most with more transitions than you see. To see them all and to get a better understanding, watch this tutorial:
I purchased more through the Magix Store:
And I have more purchased from Pixelan:
For titles:
Three title packs purchased in the Magix Store:
You also get:

Some free songs and audio FX from the Magix Store

There is currently an special offer for Magix MS2022 Suite that includes proDAD VitaScene v4 LE and FXHome Ignite Colorizer.
Just remember that this is a different program from Vegas MS and you will need to learn how to use it. Vegas Pro Edit is basically the same look and feel as Vegas MS with many more features, but not much more in the way of content, as far as I know.
Unfortunately those MAGIX products are still misleadingly included on the product pages of vegascreativesoftware.com. For now, you can still examine the features there.
FayFen, As somewhat of a neophyte at this, trying to make the best of it, I watch a lot of tutorials. What I miss is an easy way to pick transitions (for clips and for texts) without dragging each type onto the story board to test it. And then some have a lot of ways to tweak them, but those are unclear to me, and I haven't seen a good definitive tutorial on exactly how to adjust them -- probably too many to cover, but even one really good (complex) example run through it's course would help.
No, I don't need them but it's nice to have them if needed. When I want a transition, I usually use Pixelan SpiceMaster 3. The latest version is much improved over the earlier one.
Same with titles - nice to have and I do use a variety of them, but not many. I have my preferred ones, usually two of the captions and a credits title. Anything special and I'll do it in BluffTitler.
Effects - I don't use many of the umpteen NB and Hitfilm effects that I have, but still, nice to have just in case.
However, there are other things that I mentioned that are very useful for most users.
Travel Maps should come with Vegas. Users should request it.
Some people like to have many choices available. Others like to make their own. So, it's nice to have options available.
I have more than one video editor just because some of them have an effect or can do something that my main one does not.
Yes, I realize that I have broken the rules, sorry about that, but most users that have been told to go to the Magix.info forum for questions about Magix MS don't actually show up. The ones that do, don't ask what the program can do or what they get, and many just go in there to trash the program without knowing what the program actually does and contains. And, it seems that some users don't bother to look at the details on the Vegascreativesoftware.com site which is still the only site that shows what Magix MS does. On that site, click on Community Forum and you're sent here. So, they ask here.
Thanks for posting the list of what is included in the Suite. Are any of them time-limited (expire after a year or two) or tied to just one version of the program?
Would the OP not be better off trying to find and upgrade to VMS 17 Suite if he wants to stay at this level rather than go to Vegas Pro? What are the addons with VMS17 Suite?
I don't have all of them installed but I'd say at least most of those NBFX plugins in the VMS 16 Suite work in later versions without a watermark. Maybe @jetdv can specify.
AFAIK, not many addons in the VMS 17 Suite. It did have FXhome Ignite Advanced VFX Pack at least for a while.
To be "future-proof", I'd suggest (as earlier) VEGAS Edit 19 / VEGAS Pro 19. The product pages link is in my earlier comment.
John-Steers, a transition or FX should add and relate to your video content. It's all about the "flow" of things. First you need to just try and get the basics settings of them and see when your video shot need any 'oomph' . Just bear in mind that the most used transitions by the experts are the cut and the cross-fade.
