My vegas 17 pro preview keeps freezing during clips.

MrTomSI wrote on 4/11/2020, 8:39 AM

So whenever i try to preview my video the video clip always freezes, not like a frame-rate drop but a freeze then it will play for 0.5 seconds then freeze, if i pause the video at the start and wait 5 seconds it will play that clip through but start freezing again when it gets to a new section (almost like i have to pre-load the clip ?) i cant find any solutions online and none of the solutions i have tried for the usual freeze error have worked, i'm trying to work on projects but its really hard at the moment and is taking 10x the normal amount of time, also it has done this since i have had it, its not a new error. my GFX card is a 1070 NVIDIA card and my CPU is an I7 6700k which i have had for around 3-4 years. i have stupid amounts of ram, 32GB of DDR4 and thats about all is necessary i think. my OS is windows 10 64bit.

Are you using the latest graphics drivers?

Have you tried temporarily turning off GPU Acceleration of Video Processing in Preferences?

No because you are the one that is asking for help that we maybe can deliver and it's much easier to have all in the same question than click on a link and than waiting to be redirected to a site for gameplayers.

Thanks for the screenshots.
1. For the best use of your GPU you have to install the latest STUDIO driver nr.442.19 and not the lastest Game driver.

2. To decode the files better for the preview you have to choose in FileI/O the Nvidia in the lower part of that screen.

3. For smoother playing some added OFX effects and help with rendering you have to use the Nvidia in GPU acceleration of your 3th picture. For most modern files Vegas uses the so4 Compound plugin that uses this for the best preview and renderhelp.
Some strange or older files cannot use the so4 plug and therefore it is better to not use GPU accelleration and/or that default plugin.

i have done everything you said @j-v, it has actually reduced the freezing slightly, however the shorter clips still seem to freeze. is there anything else i could do ?

How can we know?
Not knowing the info @Musicvid was asking for as
- MediaInfo of your used files
- Projectproperties
- A .veg of a project with those problems, so we could see what you are doing
- File properties by Vegas

j-v wrote on 4/15/2020, 10:37 AM

Vegas file properties do you get by rightclick on the video of an event placed on the timeline and than choose "properties". Total different from MediaInfo and special the lower part of the "general" tab is important to find problems

my GFX card is a 1070 NVIDIA card

The following post appeared yesterday on the Handbrake forum:

To get usable hevc encoding with Nvidia card you need the Turing NVEnc, this means it has to be a 1650 Super or better (1660/20xx). The non-Super 1650 don't have this, nor do any of the older Nvidia cards like your 1080 and there's currently no AMD cards with what I would consider an usable hevc encoder.

And as others have noted, even the Turing NVEnc is in the "speed, not quality per bit" group but there's a number of cases where it makes good sense like streaming.
