Poor quality of snapshots

elliot-f wrote on 3/25/2022, 8:07 AM

Hey!

I tend to save down snapshots when editing in Vegas because it's very quick and easy for both thumbnails or use in videos but I've noticed that the snapshots are very poor quality and especially look very washed out (despite having preview set to Best-Full). Is there any way to get better quality with these snapshots? I can also mention that both the original file and the rendered out version looks better than the snapshots I take.

@elliot-f I'm not experiencing this. See below an original image beside a snapshot taken at Best/Full.

Check out where the rock ridge meets the skyline and notice that the "snapshot" rock ridge has little jagged edges. There is also a varied amount of noise present there as well.

[my 2 cents]

Jack S wrote on 3/26/2022, 5:53 PM

@levijudah That's probably because the original image is 3840x2160. It's been scaled down by my regular VP properties of 1920x1080.

Original image 3840x2160.........................Snapshot at 3840x2160

Is that better?

That's been done automatically in the last several versions but was certainly true many years ago.

Thank you all for the responses, I should have given you some examples.

Just as I was going to post some examples I figured out what the problem was, for some reason my project pixel settings was set to Legacy 8 bit (video levels) and I tried changing it to 8 bit (full range) and it made a HUGE difference. I have no idea why that setting was used as I never touch my project settings but in case anyone runs into the same issue and sees this thread, try looking at that setting.

In case you guys want an example just to see why it was bothering me here's a comparison, the left one is with legacy and right one with full range:

Got it Jack S, that makes sense.

@elliot-f says here that he just updated (at least tried to) his VEGAS Pro 19.

I use Vegas Pro 19. However my project file is based of a template from Vegas Pro 17 I previously used so I'm wondering if that's a reason to why this happened. Now I'm worried there might be other legacy settings that could be messing with me causing some other issues I'm experiencing (such as the undo buffer constantly crashing/causing me to have to restart the software)
