Random partial renders (?) VMS 14 Build 148

robbif2 wrote on 12/9/2017, 10:23 AM

My initial problem (none of the Magix responses ever include my original text, and foolishly I didn't save them locally!) Here's the gist: About every 10 edits or so, when I select Make Movie, VMS 14 randomly (?) renders only a small portion of the project. Retries do not work unless I completely close the editor and reopen it and the project.

Start at the bottom see my next "guess" and that it didn't happen in VMS 14 until recently and never happened in VMS 11.

My follow-up point was that if the developers changed the default setting then the result would be consistent, not (seemingy) random.

Not being able to intentionally create the problem, I wanted to keep the ticket open until the problem recurs on its own, which I'm pretty sure it will; but the rep closed the original ticket, assuming I found the solution.

Dear Fred,

Thank you for your message.
I am glad that you have found the answer to your question. The reason that you are having this issue in VMS 14 but not in VMS 11 is that our developers might have change the default setting for this feature.
Anyway, thank you for choosing Magix.

I think I may have found the answer.
I'm guessing it may be that sometimes the 'Render loop region only' option is not unchecked after the last time I
used the 'Selectively Prerender Video' feature while I'm using 'Make Movie' to render the entire project. I have not
been able to intentionally reproduce it. I know I never had this problem in VMS 11.

Murphy's Law - It hasn't happened since my post above, and I've probably done at least 30 edits since.
But if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon, please help me with a friendly sanity check!

cris wrote on 12/21/2017, 4:42 PM

The few times I've had the experience it was my error: either I had "render loop region" checked by mistake (it remembers your last settings), or - almost always - I'd been using the program for some time with a loop region to the full length, and then I'd changed the loop region, totally disconnecting it in my mind from the make movie result.

Also if you use templates(i.e. advanced mode), the "render loop region" value which matter is the one in the templates dialog.

robbif2 wrote on 12/23/2017, 8:23 AM

Thanks cris.
I had never used "render loop region" directly. The only time I intentionally imply "render loop region" is when I mark a small section and select Tools/Selectively Prerender Video (Shift-M). When I'm ready to permanently render the entire project, I see that Render Options/Render loop region only is, as I suspected, not checked. My guess was that when I'd selected Prerender the "render loop region" was set without my seeing it and in some cases not automatically unchecked. It's hard to prove now since, as I posted a while ago, although the problem had occurred for several weeks, it hasn't come back since my initial topic post. Go figure!

robbif2 wrote on 1/12/2018, 5:27 PM

It finally happened again. I haven't been able to reproduce it; but I think one situation was when I had two instances of the editor intentionally running at the same. The one I was not editing had 'Render loop region only' checked but the one I was editing did not have 'Render loop region only' checked; I selected Make Movie, and it rendered a small section. I'll update the official trouble ticket soon, if it hasn't been closed.

robbif2 wrote on 1/12/2018, 6:23 PM

Sure enough, the ticket was closed. So, I sent this love letter...

1. Despite my request to leave Ticket#2017120817000392 open, you closed it.
2. Your automated email provided https://support2.magix.com/customer/en/request
which has no obvious link or access to VMS 14! I had to rely on the forum to find...
https://support2.magix.com/customer/en/vegas/form
3. Your automated response does not contain the customer's query text, making it
difficult to track a problem, especially if more that one ticket is open.
I hope you can refer to my initial now-closed ticket so I don't have to restate
the problem. Here is my follow-up...

The florid verbiage notwithstanding, I'm giving a 99:1 impression you have a hardware overheat condition.

How would that affect the OP's "render loop region" problem? The impression I get is not that his renders don't complete, but that a loop region only render occurs when not expected. Or maybe I've missed something.

Musicvid wrote on 1/14/2018, 5:54 AM

No I think I missed something more fundamental.

robbif2 wrote on 1/14/2018, 11:46 AM

Eric, you didn't miss anything.
I'm not sure that all occurrences involved 2 instances of VMS running.
Some rationale: It's not the end of the world; nothing has crashed; it happens so fast that it's
immediately discovered, and terminating and restarting VMS fixes it. Besides, now I know
to uncheck 'Render only loop'.

Maybe the (at-this-writing) "mysterious" VMS 15 will solve it

EricLNZ wrote on 1/14/2018, 4:56 PM

It's caught me out a few times.

But rather than uncheck the option in the render window I select my whole timeline before rendering. If you don't have markers double clicking above the ruler does that. If you have markers you only get the area between two markers selected but a right click and "Set Selection to Project" fixes that. I just find it easier this way.

Ahhh, it appears you have given me a sanity check!
Thanks for what is, now that you described it, an obvious alternate solution!
I still don't know if it's a bug or a "feechure", because I never encountered it in VMS 11 or 13.

Yes... From the MAGIX "My Account": "Number of devices that can be used simultaneously: 2"

And I just opened two instances on the same computer. Did I break the EULA?

Marco. wrote on 1/15/2018, 3:07 PM

Looks like support totally mixed up input and output information. Opening instances on one computer: As many as your system power allows. It's not a matter of license.

On Magix.com that link at the upper right corner. Then go to "My products" and the "Details" link of a certain product.

Dear Fred,

Thank you for your message.
This is a part of the EULA:

3. Installation and registration

3.1 Together with the MAGIX Product you will receive an individual serial number which you must enter during installation. A one-time registration as well as online activation are also required. Using the serial number, you can activate the MAGIX Product for the number of Computers specified in the serial number; each Computer will be assigned a License Seat. If the number of License Seats specified in the serial number is exceeded, a license seat must be deactivated in order to activate the product again.

The number shows in your account only indicates how many computers you can use the serial number to activate.

I know there are many users open multiple instances of Vegas Pro for all kinds purposes, but it doesn't necessarily said that is correct way to do. Not all functions of our programs were designed for this kind working environment.

As I see it, the EULA is not quoted to confirm his stance in the earlier reply re several simultaneous instances. To me it seems to be his personal opinion which is not backed by the EULA.
