rendered bitrate is way different than the template value

Hi, I've been using VMS11 for a few years on a 64-bit machine, and realize its a 32-bit program, so I'm limited to slightly less than 4GB of RAM usage, even though I have 16GB installed. I just have the standard Intel graphics (4000, I think) card, so nothing special there.

So last night I downloaded and installed the latest 64-bit version 14 (build 87) and did some rendering on a simple, short HD video of about 10 minutes length. To my surprise, version 11, utilizing 3.5GB of RAM rendered the video in 9 minutes. When I rendered the same video in version 14, at the same settings, it utilized 4.5GB of RAM, but took 14 minutes. Both programs are in more or less default settings, I haven't tried to tweak anything to affect performance on either version.

Why didn't version 14 utilize more RAM, and why did it take LONGER???

BTW, its a i7 CPU, 3rd generation, forget the exact version, i7-3770 maybe. Not on that machine at the moment.

EDIT: see screenshots in later post, problem is related to rendered bitrate being wrong

Post MediaInfo properties for both renders. Usually we find that "exact same settings" aren't the same. RAM utilization has only a superficial effect on render speed.

Hey musicvid, thanks for the suggestion, I always forget that simple sanity check when something doesn't make sense. So here's a screenshot of the rendering template, plus the mediainfo display, which explains the problem. I selected a 500kbps video rate, which is clearly shown in the template info, but I ended up with 1000kbps final video rate, WTF???

edit: the second screenshot on the right took almost exactly the same time to render, 13:09 vs. 13:11, yet the bitrates are quite different. And I tried a third one with a nominal 1Mbps rate in the template, but the finished video was just under 2Mbps (but it only took 15.5 minutes to render). The final filesizes are proportional to the bitrates shown in mediainfo, so it appears that the s/w isn't actually rendering to the advertised bitrates in the templates.

can anybody explain that???

I wasn't able to figure out how to do a custom rendering template in v14, even though the help menu claimed it was an option, and that option is clearly available in v11.

Are you using the Platinum versions of both programs? Customizable render templates are not an option in the basic version (see the comparison table). And the Help files may not always be correctly updated. Also, the Customizable Template button is under Advanced Options of Make Movie, Render As in MS 13 P (and probably in 14 P as well).

I have the Platinum version for 11, but downloaded the basic version for 14, that explains the lack of custom rendering templates, thanks.

Anybody else have any idea why the actual rendered bit rates are so far off from the template bit rates???
