Rendering gets stuck at random point every time

Alexandre-Vidal wrote on 4/8/2022, 12:19 PM

Hi,

This is very urgent. I'm supposed to post a video I edited on my employer's Instagram page, but the rendering always gets stuck at a random frame. It works fine up until around 20% - 50%, then suddenly decides to not work at all.

I selected a preset that fit the video's resolution and framerate to help reduce the estimated file size (250mb in my case), and I tried on both my internal and external SSDs (the external SSD has 77GB of free space as of right now, so way more than enough for any video I could render).

I also tried giving Vegas 19 high CPU priority and forcing W11 to run it using my dedicated GPU, but this doesn't seem to change anything.

Here are my specs :

  • Laptop model : Dell Inspiron 3583
  • Integrated graphics : Intel UHD 620
  • Dedicated graphics : Radeon 520
  • Processor : Intel Core i8-8265U @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs)
  • RAM : 8GB
  • OS : Windows 11 (don't ask me about reverting back to Windows 10, I don't have time for such right now)

Thanks in advance to anyone who has an answer. Please keep in mind you're talking to someone who isn't exactly tech-savvy so any suggestion must come with very precise instructions to follow.

@Alexandre-Vidal

Hi, reducing frame rate doesn't reduce file size, reducing bit rate will but it will reduce picture quality the lower you go, you're better choosing the same frame rate as the orig file even if you reduce the resolution

Vegas 19 System requirements https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/gb/specifications/#productMenu

16GB RAM, you only have 8GB

CPU 2.5Hz, yours is 1.6Hz.

Also at the moment VEGAS Pro 19 "does not officially support Windows 11 yet" https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-19-and-support-for-windows-11--132810/

Alexandre-Vidal wrote on 4/8/2022, 12:42 PM

The frame rate is the same as that of the original video

Even if my laptop doesn't necessarily meet the requirements, it should at least be able to get the job done even if slower. A software getting stuck in the middle just like that just shouldn't be happening.

I know that reducing the bitrate will reduce the file size but that's isn't what I'm looking for.

I've tried Hitfilm Express but their renderer would always get stuck right at the start unless I chose AVI rendering which requires a HUGE amount of storage space, and I've also tried Lightworks but its interface is garbage and I honestly can't be bothered to learn how to use it.

@Alexandre-Vidal How much free space is on your main (C) hardrive? & what is the media your editing, size & format?

Alexandre-Vidal wrote on 4/8/2022, 12:51 PM

Media :

  • 1280x720p
  • 24fps
  • Rendering optimized for internet, 24fps

Storage space :

220GB SSD, 9.24GB of free space (it gets cluttered all the time with temporary files and such no matter how hard I try cleaning it up).

@Alexandre-Vidal I'm away from pc on the rd right now, but to clean your pc, go to Settings - system - Storage - Temporary files, select all boxes & delete to clear out old files & make space, I don't know if it's the same for W11.

In Windows 11, it's one step less - Settings - Storage - Temporary files.

@Alexandre-Vidal That's not quite correct, yes your CPU is under powered so might work but a bit slower,

but your RAM is the thinking 'space', you have 8GB, Vegas recommend 16GB -

In this pic i have only Vegas open (& Taskmanager) but my PC is already using 8GB,

& after adding 1.5mins of clips & rendering, the RAM goes up to 12GB

...and the amount of free space on your hard drive isn't much.

There have been a few issues with Intel 620 graphics, I can't speak for your Radeon.

To get you through this project;

  • Go to Options->Preferences->Video and turn "GPU Acceleration of Video Processing" to OFF.
  • Render your internet file using a Software template (not one with QSV or AMD beside it).

This should get you through; then post back and someone can help you troubleshoot and update your graphics drivers.

lower your "dynamic ram preview max" to a few hundred MBs.

Having issues with rendering and video preview also just freezes.

I have a 1 TB SSD, 16 GB ram laptop. When i want to render my video out, it just keeps freezing at 7%; furthermore, my video preview freezes, and I have to keep closing it and reopening it up when I'm trying to do effects.

Willy97 wrote on 12/11/2022, 10:53 PM

I'm using Vegas pro-20

RogerS wrote on 12/11/2022, 11:01 PM

@Willy97 I'd start a new thread and share details about your CPU and GPU model, GPU driver version and MediaInfo for your media. Also let us know if there are Fx or VSTs in use on your timeline as well as what's happening at the frame where it freezes.

Willy97 wrote on 12/11/2022, 11:37 PM

sorry to ask, but how do you start a new thread?

RogerS wrote on 12/11/2022, 11:56 PM

I see you figured it out : )
