Video with Audio Formats

Jamie-Tant wrote on 12/27/2020, 8:21 AM

Hi,

Anyone know which would be the best supported format to use for video with audio? Due to Vegas 17 no longer using AAC video files which all my clips are in so I will need to convert them but not sure which format would be best to use so the video has the audio along with it.

As far as I can tell the supported formats for Video are:

HEVC/H.265, AVC/H.264, MP4, MOV, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, AVI, WMV, XAVC-S, XAVC, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD 422, XDCAM PRODISC, HDCAM SR, MPEG IMX, DV, HDV, AVCHD, PANASONIC P2, RED RAW, APPLE PRORES

As far as I can tell the supported formats for Audio are:

AIF, MP2, MP3, M4A, OGG VORBIS, WAV, WMA, FLAC

So now I`m confused as to which video format to convert my ACC files from and to? For best quality for both video and audio? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I only have a couple days of work and need to get my DVD`s finalised.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Vegas supports AAC audio, and it is the universally accepted audio format for AVC (HD) and HEVC (4k) video formats, which in turn are the universally accepted consumer video delivery formats at this point in history.

Perhaps you are thinking of AC3 audio, a much older audio format for DVD, which had to be temporarily excluded from Vegas, ostensibly due to licensure issues.

Hi Sorry I just checked my footage is done in MOD Format which in SV 17.0 only gives me the video but no audio! So i know i need to convert the footage but not sure which would be the best format to convert them to?

Yes I think the audio is actually AC3

@Jamie-Tant why aren't you continuing in your original thread on this? I'm closing that previous one as "Cross posting, i.e. spreading around the same entry in multiple categories" (CR #3).

So now you know why we ask for MediaInfo and Vegas file properties before answering questions about formats.

And yes, it contains AC3 audio, so you will need to open it in an earlier version of Vegas, or encode in Handbrake.

I do have a much earlier version but now I`ve ran the project through 17.0 and saved it it said it will no longer work on older versions? So that is out of the question! I do not understand what you mean when you say encode in Handbrake?

Because Vegas can't work with the audio at the moment so you need to reencode the media using an old version or Handbrake.

Hi, I still don`t know what anyone means by the term Handbrake? I am unable to use my older version now due to saving the project in Vegas 17.0 and it said it will not work on any older versions now I`ve done this.

You don't need to convert the project, you need to convert the media and then replace them in your VP 17 project.
