Your Flash drive should be formatted as either NTFS or EXFAT. Otherwise, your file is restricted to a 4gig size.

lynne-l wrote on 9/12/2018, 10:35 PM

OK. Thanks. I searched how to format it to NTFS and I'll try doing this.

EricLNZ wrote on 9/12/2018, 10:50 PM

But be warned - if you are using the drive on a TV not all TVs will play NTFS. My Panasonic only accepts FAT16 and FAT32. Also avi is not a file type that all TVs will play. It is not considered a delivery format. Is there a reason you are exporting as avi?

vkmast wrote on 9/13/2018, 5:54 AM

Probably see here and the initial post.

EricLNZ wrote on 9/13/2018, 7:02 AM

Thanks vk. I had subsequently discovered it's an Epson projector involved. But it's rather bizarre. Lynne's less than 2 min avi is 10.3 gb. Presumably uncompressed. Obviously not suitable.

Lynne a few questions in order to lead you in a more suitable direction:

1 - What model is your projector
2 - What is your source material and where does it come from
3 - Is your export to be SD, HD, or UHD.

First of all, I really appreciate everything everyone has said to try to help me. Eric, I have a new (I've had it a few weeks) Epson VS250 SVGA 3 LCD projector. Hopefully I'm understanding you right on your #2 question. I had taken some pictures with my iPhone and saved them onto my HP laptop. Other source material is me speaking into my HP laptop using the audio recorder with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (free downloaded trial version). I rendered my less than 2 minute movie to the avi format on Platinum (save to ________ now I can't remember what it's called. I need to check it again by trying to render another short movie), then clicked on the window to the right where I saw pcm codec (as the Epson person had said I need pcm codec). I exported this to my San Disk usb 128 bg flashdrive with only this video on it. I put this flashdrive into the usb slot in the back of my Epson projector. I got a notice that the usb device isn't formatted. Then I formatted it to NTFS. I tried it again in the Epson projector and got the same message. Then I formatted it to something FAT and tried it again. Again, my Epson displayed a message saying my usb device is not formatted. All this is really interesting to me, but there is something I'm not doing right - or several things I'm not doing right.

Lynne, "AVI" got stuck in your head somehow and that's so not even what you want.

Once you've assembled your movie and sound in Vegas, render to 1080p Internet mp4.

Or 720p Internet mp4 if it projects choppy.

Put it on a flash drive. Any flash drive will do, as long as the file is smaller than 4GB.

Put the flash drive in the projector. Done.

Once again, framing your playback question as a codec question is likely to draw a lot of spurious responses. Best.

lynne-l wrote on 9/13/2018, 3:59 PM

Hello. The reason AVI was in my head was because the technician at Epson said I needed to use AVI and that I need pcm or adpcm as the codec. Who know? Maybe the technician (or customer service person?) didn't know what they were talking about. I really don't know. This is one big learning experience. I'll try your method. My first method produced a choppy movie (sound choppy) when I played it back on my laptop. Thanks. Take care.

It took a while but I found the specs for USB Flash drive use. It must be an MJPEG-AVI file, cannot be larger than 2gigs and must be on a FAT or FAT32. Movie Studio does not contain an MJPEG codec natively.

lynne-l wrote on 9/13/2018, 5:51 PM

So, from what your saving, I can not use Movie Studio to create a movie I can put on a usb flash drive. Right?

lynne-l wrote on 9/13/2018, 5:52 PM

I mean, that will work in my Eason projector.

lynne-l wrote on 9/13/2018, 8:10 PM

I was responding to another person here.

Former user wrote on 9/13/2018, 8:14 PM

Musicvid, the specs on the projector that I found says it only supports MJPEG-AVI off of a flash drive.

Musicvid wrote on 9/13/2018, 8:43 PM

Well that's weird but Vegas won't render mjpeg AVI without an external encoder.

EricLNZ wrote on 9/13/2018, 11:13 PM

Or alternatively export as mp4 and convert with one of the free downloadable video convertors.

The Epson specification for flash drive is somewhat limited.

lynne-l wrote on 9/14/2018, 1:34 PM

Yes, this is a good idea, exporting it as mp4. I wish the Epson projector wasn't so limited with the usb port regarding movies. Epson also says the avi file should be avi 1.0 and it needs to be saved with codec pcm or adpcm. I keep searching for avi 1.0 with pcm. I really don't know exactly what I'm doing, so this is a big learning experience. I'd really like to be able to use the flash drive as I don't especially want to have to carry around my laptop, too, if I show any movies anywhere.

Former user wrote on 9/14/2018, 2:14 PM

I would suggest you get a Media player. Do a search for USB media player on Amazon or the web and you will see many options. They are better than dragging computer and will be high quality.

lynne-l wrote on 9/14/2018, 8:51 PM

After all this, I decided to buy NCH Video Pad this afternoon. It does convert to AVI with codec PCM. Thanks for everyone's help.

Robbie wrote on 9/15/2018, 12:19 AM

Before you buy, it might be wise to use a trial version if available or check with NCH to confirm that it produces AVI files with the MJPEG codec that the Epson Projector requires.

lynne-l wrote on 9/15/2018, 12:16 PM

I did use the free trial version of Video Pad. I experimented and made a very short movie. But, then I tried to export it to make a video, it wouldn't allow me to do it without buying it. So, I bought it. It seems fine, but there is a bug in the AVI (I don't know how to term this) and only my audio was made into a movie, not pictures. I need to figure out how to contact them to say there is some bug. I was able to make MP4 with no problem, though. I still have the free trial version of Vegas Movie Studio, too.

lynne-l wrote on 9/15/2018, 8:41 PM

Robbie, thank you for this link to get support from NCH. I'll do it tomorrow. Thanks so much for this. I like this Vegas forum. All of you are really helpful.

Lynne-I, please, did it work? I am facing the same issue. Thanks a million
