Beginner questions. moviemaker 14.0

mgb wrote on 3/3/2017, 11:02 PM

Hey guys, I just purchased and installed movie studio 14.0 and I'm curious about a few small things.
First, does movie studio actually have an overlay bar that I can't find or is that a pro only feature?
Secondly and more importantly, I'm getting an error message which says my webm and mp4 files are corrupted or unrecognizable when I attempt to bring them into move studio.

Is there anything I can do to fix this or am I stuck with a lemon?

-thanks

What do you mean by an "overlay bar"?

Webm is not supported.

What is the source of your mp4 files?

I mean a place where I can post images over a video and move them in sync, I was looking online and after a bit of research it appears the controls to do something like that don't come in basic movie studio.

mp4 files were converted from webms with vlc.

Do you know if it's possible to upgrade 14.0 to the suite or pro option at this point?

You can see what this link gives you, but I understand a few days ago it wasn't offering any upgrades to Movie Studio 14 versions. https://support2.magix.com/customer/vegas/upgrade

If your mp4 files won't open in one version of Vegas, they are highly unlikely to open in another.

It was mostly access to the overlays that I needed, otherwise I'll have to buy a copy of movie studio suite and be down $70 aus.
Unfortunately the option doesnt' appear to be available to me.

I'll have to keep searching for a solution to the mp4 problem, it may be a codec issue as I've installed the quicktime software it asked for already.

Certainly it should possible to upgrade VMS 14 as you wish, e.g. through the respective product pages of the site. If you mean if it's possible to get special upgrade pricing is another matter. Contact Customer Service or as Nick says, try https://support2.magix.com/customer/vegas/upgrade to see what you are offered there.

At the moment it's not possible e.g. for me to get upgrade pricing for going from (Sony) MSS 13 to a MVMS 14 product line app. I have not tried to use "leaked info" from elsewhere in the online world. Instead, I just created a ticket with CS as advised on VCS Facebook by Vegas Social Media Team(dated Feb 23: "During the next days we will contact all VEGAS user[s] with an upgrade offer [of MAGIX VEGAS Movie Studio 14 product line] via insoftware newsfeed or email - - - If you don't get the offer please get in contact with our support").

Actually I thought that since it was the same program with less features they'd have a modular system for upgrading from basic studio to suite or pro. Since it's really the video overlay function that I need the most, as everything else it offers comes bog standard with free to use video editors.

His link unfortunately doesn't consider my current 14.0 versions serial number valid for an upgrade to pro.

I dont know if the basic version of VMS 14 has no more videotracks , but the platinum version has 200 videotracks (199 for overlay if you wish).
So there is no need for upgrade to pro, just upgrade to 14 platinum.

The comparison between VMS 14 and VMS 14 platinum point out that the basic version has 10 videotracks, so enough to place your overlay images.

Every version of Vegas has a free trial version.

In other words, no one wanted you to pay for something just go find out what it won't do.

So trying before buying is the recommended path, not the reverse.

Product comparisons of Movie Studio versions are here. What you call "overlay" is more correctly called "compositing,"
