DaVinci - Vegas - Match Color Space

Komaryt wrote on 7/9/2019, 8:59 AM

Hello I am struggling with that problem for about year now.
Is there any option to match the best color spaces between this two software? My main software is Vegas 15 but I love making color grading in DaVinci and their Color Space. Is that possible to set davinci's color space into Vegas 15? Or other option?

I hate that when I am rendering movie into DNxHD from DaVinci (Data Levels set on Auto/Video) and movie has low contrast which I need to add in Vegas and when I am rendering again DNxHD (Data Levels set on Full) movie is too dark, contrast is so strong.
I think that problem is in color spaces between this two software but I can be wrong, maybe is there something what I am making bad?

Thanks for reply!

Not colour space problem. Leave as video levels. Don't change anything in Vegas.

Can you please upload some example screenshots and the settings you used?

From DaVinci I am using DNxHD (220/185/175) Data Levels: (mostly) Auto but VIDEO looks the same. I am not using FULL because there is too much contrast.

EDIT: oh, screenshots didn't upload

Yes, I think you are noticing the difference in Preview levels between Vegas and Da Vinci. Vegas previews RGB, while Da Vinci probably previews output levels, like Premiere? Different look, but same results.

If you render each to exactly the same codec and settings, I suspect there will be no measurable difference between the two.

  • Here is an ancient tutorial that attempts to explain the problem, and also shows the steps for making a DNxHD Intermediate. Start at 2:55

  • Here is another method written by Nick Hope, one of our moderators. it's FAQ #24, but study them all.

  • Many others here are recommending the SEMW extensions for toggling Preview levels.

That said, you are probably doing everything just right. The different preview results between Vegas and other applications are expected, and a are feature for advanced users. It is the output (rendered files) that count, and normalizing Vegas' preview to playback levels temporarily becomes habit after a while.

When you've wrapped your brain around this puzzle, here is a mildly sarcastic look at the whole issue of legacy YUV and RGB levels in our video world. Although a holdover, its not going away soon.

nothing really helps :( I made tried all methods and footage is still too washed up :/ I thought it could be gamma difference in DaVinci but when I changed it to 2.2 nothing really happens after rendering so I am in start.
My friend told me that he is not using DNxHD because of that washed up colors and he is using ProRes but DaVinci don't give me that option to render footage into prores :(

Do this test: place davinci rendered footage on Vegas timeline. Render it. Place your Vegas rendered footage on the VEGAS timeline under the Davinci footage. Mute / un-mute the top track to compare. Does it look the same? - it should (Never mind look "right", just "same.") Do the scopes change? They shouldn't.

If the footage is different, then you have likely set something up wrong.

How are you using DNxHD? Via QuickTime? That can be the culprit.

Install the Grass Valley HQX CODEC and then render out of DaVinci to Grass Valley HQ or HQX in AVI (basically: HQ = DNxHD, HQX = DNxHR). Then, check that in VEGAS Pro to see how it looks.

EDIT: You need the CODEC installed for this to work in VEGAS Pro (will also add support for Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player, and most other Windows applications, as well). CODEC installer includes the Encoder and Decoder for VEGAS Pro. Resolve supports this format natively.
