Giving up On VMS 17 Platinum - Freezes Nearly on Every Project

BobN2Tech wrote on 4/2/2022, 4:15 AM

I am using VMS Platinum 17.0 now for over 1 year, build 223 and on nearly every project it will freeze at one point. I've tried everything possible from all tips and adjustments in this forum and YouTube to prevent the software from freezing during normal editing (trimming, playback, adjusting cut points, even adding & then removing media from a network drive, etc.). Oddly rendering if I get to it does not freeze. There is enough resources (monitor the resource monitor) and yet out of t.he blue it will just freeze. It could be just adding media, trimming, playback, etc (but never rendering). My setup is Windows 10 Pro x64, Intel I7-7700 3.2GHhz, Gigabyte MB H270 Chipset, 16GB dual Channel xmp Ram, 8TB of HDD. I am using the Intel GPU for rendering. I set even the internal preferences SO4 disabled. Changed Video Dynamic Ram Preview to up to 1/3 total ram, did not help, so set to 0 (letting the VMS decide), disabled GPU acceleration, etc). I am so tired of losing my projects. I have to try another product. Most of the video projects use 4K30 H.264 mp4 or H.264 mov video. Any recommendations for a different product?

The QT plug in got broken so doesn't work in Build 223. But it was only needed for MOV files where the Format ID is identified as JPEG or PNG encoded video. It isn't needed for MOV H264/AVC encoded files. VMS uses so4compoundplug.dll for these which you @BobN2Tech appear to have disabled in internal preferences?

BobN2Tech wrote on 4/2/2022, 11:15 AM

I have used .mov (H.264/AAC) files only for a few projects (from an Akaso action cam), it did not matter whether I had enabled or disabled so4compoundplug.dll. It still freezes randomly, However, most of my projects are only .mp4(H.264/AVC), and still freezes up during editing. I had now have seen a new issue that freezes VMS. I just started to use a NAS for my source files (via LAN as a mapped network drive), and I've noticed that sometimes when I add media from the Project Tab, (does not matter type), as soon as I open a folder or select a file, it will freeze VMS. If I load the same file via VMS Explorer view, it will load fine. I've noticed if I remove just one of these files from the Project, then go back to Add Media it consistantly freezes (via Add Media). Too many bugs, too random. I see PC Magazine had reviewed various editing software (The Best Video Editing Software for 2022 | PCMag) and given Movie Edit Pro and Vegas Pro a rather average rating and has the worst render time of all the products. It's reviewer also had crashes. I am so use to and like the VMS UI, but its Ux is so bad with all the freezing, I just can't keep doing projects and have to try and recover (autosave is not enough, I save every time I do any operation), it's too much for me.

Your NAS likely uses a slow or incompatible protocol. Many of them are SMB or something else totally unsuitable for editing, so Vegas freezes while Windows is trying to locate files and folders on the remote drive and run its required security scans.

Here's a .bat file you can use to check relative bidirectional throughput. Alter the paths to your own if you are familiar with CMD. You'll need fping in your user folder. Lower your packet size a little if it hangs. You'll need to get at least 300Mbps actual throughtput over a wired GB LAN to do anything useful, depending of course on the media you are trying to access. Don't "expect" to work with UHD this way unless you have IT troubleshooting experience.

That's an interesting point, and a good way to test throughput. Although, as I've experienced, using the VMS's Explorer tab to add or trim media never has frozen, just using the Project Tab "Add Media". The NAS uses SMB and I have 2.5Ge wired connection, so it should be fairly fast. I get 113MB/s (~900 Mbps) if reading a 4GB file (copy from NAS to Local drive) using Windows Explorer. Since using the NAS for my clips is recent, and if this were the only problem that could cause the freeze, I would put the project files on a local drive to edit the project, but given all the other problems existed prior to using NAS, it makes it extremely frustrating.

SMB protocol and Nonlinear Editing almost never work together. That is from two decades of experience, including school system backbones. You need to go with wired TCP/IP, or local drives, no other suggestions, sorry.

My theory is that a NAS is optimized for delivering file transfers and compressed streams for realtime playback, something it does quite easily. Delivering packets for decoding to raw bits by nonlinear editors is an entirely different matter, and buffer overflows are a likely culprit, which would seem to explain your "Add Media" freezups.

You can get Vegas pro19 for $90,

vkmast wrote on 4/3/2022, 9:04 AM

The current Upgrade price at the vegascreativesoftware.com website's Online Shop of VEGAS 19 Edit (which includes VEGAS Pro) is now $119 (perpetual license). Your VMSP serial number should be valid for the upgrade pricing if it has not been previously used for upgrading.

Annual subscription of VEGAS Edit 365 is $7.79/month (yearly payment).

@FayFen can you provide a legit link for a valid ~$90 offer for the perpetual/one-time puchase license)?

I keep getting e-mail with such offer, I just deleted one this morning.

I assume there is a trial. But I assumed since MVS 17 Platinum and Vegas 19 Edit/Pro are using the same code foundation, but with a few less features, how would that solve my freezing issues? Since I am so familiar with this product, and as I said like the UI, I would like to continue to use it.

@BobN2Tech

Before purchasing VP19 and risking the disappointment that it "might" not work with editing from your NAS, I'll be happy to test it again, since I have everything needed to do so. GB wired LAN, attached NAS ~375 Mbps Bidirectional throughput.

One piece of information I am missing is, what format and properties are your source files stored on your NAS? Be specific please, using MediaInfo. I can also test on VP14, which is closer to your present version.

BobN2Tech wrote on 4/4/2022, 12:57 AM

Musicvid, I infer from your post that you don't have any issues with freezing randomly. I use 3 different video sources, all are H.264. The freeze is random, and does not depend on which one of these file formats I've used. Sometimes just attempting to open the folder on the NAS using the Project Add Media will freeze. Never had it yet freeze when using the Explorer tab on VMS. You're welcome to try though. I've attached the mediainfo on 3 of the file sources I use.

That is 100% true, and 100% irrelevant.

The results of my own tests convinced me to stop trying nonlinear editing from NAS. well over a decade ago. So my personal curiosity is already satisfied.

Thank you so much for providing your source details; I have offered to test it again with data, if you think it may be helpful to your progress. Let me know.

BobN2Tech wrote on 4/4/2022, 11:21 AM

Thanks, I think it may be helpful to eliminate one of the freezing issues, and if your testing also shows it can happen with your NAS, I would definitely use a local drive for editing, and only archive the source footage on the NAS. I am curious what method you use to then Archive to your NAS upon completing a project, and in case you ever need to return to that project how easy/difficult it may be to restore the source footage to the local drive?

As I mentioned in my previous posts, I was still having freezing issues when I was not using the NAS, but then again I can't recall if I've set/disable the parameters readers suggested before using the NAS. The projects are UHD matching usually the Drone footage. The random nature of the freezes, even if I repeat the same steps (e.g., move the play head, move a clip, trim a clip)- after re-starting VMS - almost never happen again in the same spot of the timeline.
