Did not realize that the delete inside of the software would actually delete original media files from my computer. Is there any way to recover them? They are not in the recycle bin.
I have never seen an app that deletes original files from a computer. I was expecting it to just delete them from the app itself. I have been trying to use the iCare app to recover them. Hopefully, it does. I cannot believe that Vegas didn't even put it in the recycle bin. Really? Poor design.
I just tested this again by deleting files from VP14 Explorer. Besides asking (as Cornico said) "are you sure that you..." the deleted files showed up in my Recycle bin. "Are you sure that you" did not select the option for "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted". In Project Media, "Delete" removes from Project (only). There's another option that removes from Project and deletes file(s) as well but it asks first..
It's most convenient to use the lightning icon to remove unused files from the PROJECT; like Cornico says, you really have to work hard to delete them from the computer, with two warning screens in the way.
I don't think a NLE should be able to delete a file from the computer. It's ok to remove it from Movie Studio. A video of two kids racing to the finish line to see who is state champion can't be retaken.

In that case you should keep the original sources. At least until you are comfortable with your finished product.

THAT'S the bottom line! For every project I have a single main production folder which is copied to a different hard drive and named projectname-BACKUP. It's saved me more than once!

That's nonsense. Plenty applications do - video, audio, art, you name it. They all tend to warn you in advance. Blaming an application for your mistake is laughable.

I agree, if the NLE is not distractive why should it act as OS file explorer and let you totally delete files. On my other NLE's I never bothered to delete "files" from it's bin/library/media folder knowing it's just the "vector" I'm deleting.

The reason is that files get added to Project Media when created.
So the ability to delete them seems logical.
The question THEN becomes, "do we allow deletion of PRE-EXISTING files? If so, what constitutes" pre-existing? First project save, last project used, what?
Or do we neither add rendered files nor allow deletion?
Its less simple than the discussion has lead us to sofar.
Everything in VMS Project Media is a copy of the original, be it first save or last use or anything in between. I feel that no NLE should be able to delete the original file.
My understanding is that the Project Media Pane doesn't contain a copy of the original. It's a shortcut to the original file on your hard drive.
As has been explained it is the shortcut that gets deleted, not the original file. If you want to delete both the shortcut in the Project Media Pane and the original file you need to right click and select "Remove from Project and Delete File(s)" instead of selecting "Remove from Project". The latter just deletes the shortcut from the Project Media Pane as just the Delete key.
Of course it's a different matter if you delete from the Explorer window as you are working on the original file and if you have Windows set up to not to put deleted files into your Recycle Bin you could delete and lose them.
At least this is my experience but I'm always open to correction if I'm incorrect.
As I still do not realy have VMS yet, I wonder, Can one load an old project (the edited timeline) file to empty VMS without populating the Project Media Pane first ? Or the Edit file itself contain also all the Project Media Pane vectors whether used in that project or not ?
On some other NLE's the edit file contains only the timeline info and not the "bin" data.
My impression is that the Project file contains info on where the source material is as well as timeline edit instructions. If you delete the source material from your hard drive or move them to another location then when you open the project file VMS won't find the material. You are then presented with options for finding the material, using alternative material or leaving "off line". From memory if you choose the latter the timeline and media pane are populated with blank clips. I'll play around later to confirm.
Edit: Yes the thumbs appear in project Media Pane and timeline as "Offline" without an image. So it seems you cannot load an old project without populating the Project Media Pane. But you could load a new blank project and copy the timeline items over from the old project. They would then appear in the new project media pane.
