Importing Polaroid Cube+ footage

evileivind wrote on 12/18/2018, 11:49 PM

Hi!
I'm using Vegas Pro 14, and tried importing the MP4 footage from my Polaroid Cube+ camera. Sadly, I only got the audio; the video is all green. The video plays fine in VLC, so I presume the problem is with my Vegas software.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

I could try using a converter first (like Handbrake), but I'd prefer not having to spend more time by doing more work and risk the quality being affected by additional compression. Much easier and better just putting the raw video into my timeline, as I do with other video.

Thanks a bunch for any help! 😄

Please share a sample file (e.g. on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com) for users here to test on their systems.

Sure! Hopefully this brief sample video will work.

Thank you. Unfortunately it's green for me too in all of VP14, 15 & 16. I tried rewrapping it to a new mp4 container (using Import Assist in HappyOtterScripts) and that didn't help. So I'm afraid it looks like you're stuck with transcoding.

Please leave the file online so I can alert the developers to it.

"The video plays fine in VLC, so I presume the problem is with my Vegas software."

It's not just a Vegas problem. It's a Premier Elements problem. It's a VideReDo problem.

Perhaps, just perhaps, it's a Polaroid problem. Is there a Polaroid these days?

Use of Polaroid brand following bankruptcy

After the bankruptcy, the Polaroid brand was licensed for use on other products with the assistance of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.  In September 2002, World Wide Licenses, a subsidiary of The Character Group plc, was granted the exclusive rights for three years to manufacture and sell digital cameras under the Polaroid brand for distribution internationally.[15] Polaroid branded LCDs and plasma televisions and portable DVD players had also appeared on the market.

On April 27, 2005, Petters Group Worldwide announced its acquisition of PHC. Petters has in the past bought up failed companies with well-known names for the value of those names. The same year, Flextronics purchased Polaroid's manufacturing operations and the decision was made to send most of the manufacturing to China.[16] It stopped making Polaroid cameras in 2007 and discontinued the sale of Polaroid film after 2009 to the dismay of loyal consumers.[17][18] On December 18, 2008, the post-reorganization Polaroid Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota. The bankruptcy filing came shortly after the criminal investigation of its parent company, Petters Group Worldwide, and the parent company founder, Tom Petters.[19]

I'd advise the Vegas Pro development team to come in over the holidays and get right on solving this problem so anyone who buys one over the holidays can edit their holiday videos before the new year.

Maybe, we should start an industry consortium to encourage Avid, Resolve and Apple developers to help with the solution so every company on the globe who wants to use a non-standard video format can be certain their users can edit their award winning epics with real Professional software.

Edit:

Oh, by the way. AVIDEMUX gets it rewrapped so Vegas an use it..

Format profile                           : Baseline@L4

The profile your camera wrote is entirely wrong.

1920x1080 60p requires at least Main@L4.2 to decode in Vegas, so that's why the AviDemux wrap works. In fact that's what tipped me off. High@L4.2 is recommended.

Your bug report needs to be seen by Polaroid. Vegas does not recalculate Profile and Level from source, it only reads the flag.

Strange. This Polaroid video works fine for me in both Vegas Pro 15 and 16 latest builds and using so4compound reader. It doesn't work in VP14 using compound reader.

I just tested my VP 14, 15 (b384), and 16 as well and got exactly the same experience as Marco.

I get a green screen in VP13, VP15, VP16, and Movie Studio 15 (all latest versions), but with DaVinci Resolve 15 it works fine!!

In VMS 15 Platinum here OK, even in the basic MS 15 as well (so4compound).

EricLNZ wrote on 12/19/2018, 8:54 PM

Okay here with VMS15 Plat Build 157 and 'so4compound' so there's something strange here.

Musicvid wrote on 12/19/2018, 10:16 PM

No luck here in VMS Platinum 13 or Pro 14. AviDemux didn't help.

So maybe so4 has some redeeming qualities. Coding those libraries must be incredibly difficult, so to the developers, Happy Holidays and thanks for all you do!

NickHope wrote on 12/19/2018, 10:55 PM

Here it gets read (green) by compoundplug.dll in VP15, VP16 & VMS16, even if so4compoundplug.dll is enabled. Very strange that it works for some others. I wonder if QSV decode is involved for those that can open it correctly. That's all I can think of. No Intel graphics on my machine.

Spot on Nick. In VMS15 I disabled "Enable QSV Encoding and Decoding where available" in Preferences\General and now I also get green!.

Marco. wrote on 12/20/2018, 1:55 AM

Yes, it's Intel HD Grafics here with QSV decoding enabled.
