Lock track does not work correctly.

jetdv wrote on 1/25/2022, 10:36 AM

@gary-rebholz agreed. Which is why I mentioned you'd still be able to add new events to the track. But I agree I did not mention things like track effects, track motion, and other things could still be changed as well.

Hopefully this script will help him in that he can then select everything and then use the script to remove any locked events from that selection.

Wow, thanks  @jetdv ! That script is exactly what I am looking for. It works the way I would like. Now, how do I make it work without running the script?

I guess it needs to be written right into the program? If it was, you would have a winner. Great stuff!

As of right now, you don't. But you can assign that script to a keypress which you could then press after selecting the events. Or add as a button on the toolbar.

But now it's me who comes into confusion!

Select/Unselect and Lock/Unlock are so easy in VEGAS, why should we go another way to perform it?

Thoughts about TrackLock: If...then what will happen with parent/child track? and overlay track?

OK, I show my habit here:

Yellandkeil: It is easy to use. That's not the issue. Click of a button...done. The issue is when you do a CNTRL-A or a "select after cursor" or some group selection. The locked track, or event, should not be included with the selection. If I wanted it to be selected, I would not lock it. Yes, I know I can use CNTL-mouse-click to deselect a locked event, sure. Which is fine if there is only one large event on the time line. However, as I edit, there can be numerous locked events and deselecting these events can be time consuming and frustrating. Yes I can get by a lot of this by using ripple selection.

But this makes little sense to me. Why would you want a "locked event" part of selection? It's locked, it's in the vault, hands off, stay away. If it didn't effect the movement of the other events, then ok, good to go but it does. You can't move any other event until either the locked event is un-selected or un-locked.

I just want a lock that works like every other windows program. Corel Draw has a lock, Cubase has a lock, my web-design program has a lock, other video editors have a lock and they all pretty much work the same. Once locked it's hands off until unlocked and locked events will not be part of any group selection.

jetdv: If you could add a button to that script, wow, I think it would serve well. Maybe not to the Vegas Pros but for the guys like me that are use to standardized lock. That would help. I won't hold my breath though, I am sure you have plenty of other pressing things.

Hi, If you've added the script that Jetdv gave, does it show in the Customize Toolbar option in Options top of Vegas, i have one added, it shows as a scroll at the end just above the C of Current in this pic

gary-rebholz wrote on 1/26/2022, 9:05 AM

@Jonathan-Hill, one pitfall of what you're asking for relates to how we handle grouped events. When you lock an event, that does not lock any other event grouped to it. For instance, if you lock a video event, you do not automatically lock its corresponding audio event (even though they are grouped by default). This could get you in trouble. For instance, you could lock the video event, select all events, and move them. If we do what you're suggesting, the locked video event would not move, but its corresponding audio event would and now the audio is out of sync with the video.

I suspect that this is the very reason that the original designers of the lock feature choose to do it the way it now works. If we do what you're suggesting, then you would have to be diligent about locking both the video event and its corresponding audio event.

I'm a bit torn about deciding which way is the better way to go. If we gave you the functionality you want, we would open up a great deal of potential for people messing up their projects without realizing it.

I'm a bit torn about deciding which way is the better way to go.

As for anyone who has worked with syncing stacked takes, the only way to go is to let it stay the way it is. In this context, the 'solution' is deadlier than the 'problem.'

Jonathan-Hill wrote on 1/26/2022, 12:51 PM

gary-rebholz: I hear what you are saying. I guess that because I have used the lock feature in one certain way over the years, I would be more aware of being sure that an audio and video track should be locked together, to me I understand that way of working. Others may not and I can appreciate that.

Gid: I did as you said and now my script is part of the customized tool bar. I nice little icon to click on. Wow, we are getting very close to a winner here...........Now, I am sorry to ask, and I have to laugh, can I put the same script on the timeline tool bar? If it was there.....you'd never hear me talk of this issue ever again. Laugh. I tried to put it on the timeline tool bar at the bottom of my page but I can't seem to be able to. Is it possible?

@Jonathan-Hill I don't think you can, i too wanted to put that icon down there too, (I'd like those icons to be at the top of the timeline but that's a different story)

btw if you type an @ symbol you'll get a dropdown list of people that you can tag instead of having to type each name, it'll be blue so easier to see & they'll also get a notification of your tag of them, 👍

Musicvid: I am very happy with the way the script works. Could you not add a little button somewhere that would just unselect locked events? So you can do a CTRL-A , hit the "unselect locked events" button and then I can freely move the unlocked events as I please. That way if the PRO's don't like that approach, they can just ignore the button. But for the old school users we still have an option. Which right now is almost what I am doing with the scrip on my tool bar. Just thinking of some ideas that might help.

@Jonathan-Hill, The proposal I've made to the team is an addition of a preference that you could use to select between the present behavior or the behavior you're asking for. It would default to present behavior, and if you change it, it will be on you to remember that grouped events are not locked.

@gary-rebholz  Gary, here's another one for you. How about a glue icon for joining cut events back together? On one of my music programs you can cut a track into several pieces. Then you can take the "glue selection" and join them back together as one track, or in the case of Vegas, back together as one event. Something to ponder.....
