Movie Studio 16 vs Vegas Pro

RayC76 wrote on 9/13/2019, 2:19 PM

Hello All,

Background: I just got a Windows 10 computer and after a bit of a struggle finally got Movie Studio 16 to launch on my new computer. As you know, when launching Movie Studio, you will see offers to upgrade to Vegas Pro Edit ($199) or Vegas Pro ($249).

I never consider the Vegas Pro product before because of its high cost. The $199 is more attractive, but I still need to watch my spending. However, my questions are (if you know or have an opinion):

1) Will there be a steep learning curve in using Vegas Pro?

2) Will Vegas Pro be faster in rendering movies?

3) By no means am I an expert in Movie Studio. However, is there something in Vegas Pro that can help you make movies better, easier? Are there some "wow" things in Vegas Pro Edit over Movie Studio 16? I see that Vegas Pro has the Boris Lens Flare. Is that worth the $50 difference in price?

I'm posting this question here because probably no one in the Vegas Pro forum will know Movie Studio and the differences (pros/con) between them. But I'm hoping that some of you expert Movie Studio may have some insights into Vegas Pro 17. Thank you.

Best download the trial of Vegas Pro 17 and see for yourself. For obvious reasons I have the MS 16 and MSP 16 versions as well as VP 17. I use MS 16 only for testing.

Thanks for the response. When time permits I might download VP17 and from that will see what my step might be. Now that MS is finally running let's see how she works on the computer.

@RayC76 You don't tell us what your level of use for video editing is. This will have a bearing. Are you a Pro using it for a living, a serious hobbyist or just a holiday movie maker?

RayC76 wrote on 9/13/2019, 7:21 PM

No, I'm not a pro, but I do make videos - maybe a I'm hobbyist, but I hesitate to call myself serious, but I do make videos and enjoy doing so. Thank you.

I can't think of much besides scripting that I would miss if I was resigned to MSP.

RayC76 wrote on 9/13/2019, 7:30 PM

Ha! See what a novice I am. I'm not sure what you mean by scripting, but it sounds awfully powerful :-).

I just make a movie. There's lot of movement (not using any stabilizing device). Could Vegas Pro help with that? I know that Vegas Pro is the premier movie making software so I'm thinking that there is something more robust about it compared to MS.

I will look up scripting later. Maybe I will need to download a free trial and experiment. Thank you.

VMS Platinum is basically a cut down version of Vegas Pro.

FayFen wrote on 9/13/2019, 11:43 PM

Ray, what software you are using now?

I'm new to VMS but not to video editing I can tell you that VMS is very powerful with basic editing tools but has many annoyances if you want to do complex things.

At any rate consider the platinum (or suite) and not just the basic.

* It's not the software that does good movies it's the operator.

The stabilizing tool in VMS and Vpro are actually the same, in Vpro you can more fine-tune. (only in Vpro17 the stabilizing has been improved). Scripting is nice to speed up repeating tasks but you need to search for free scripts, write them yourself or buy them, before you can use them.

For a novice, Vpro will be disappointing, because he will see no difference between VMS.

I have both VMS16 and Vpro17, but most of the time I edit with VMS16.

That's really true, I even would extend to: it's not the hardware (camera) and not the software (NLE) that does make good movies, it's the operator.

Hi FayFen,

I'm using MS Platinum. I agree that the operator is key. Obviously, what I should do is spend more time learning some of the more advanced features in MS 16. Typically, I just want to make a movie and just figure out enough of what I need to do to do what I want. I probably need to take the time to learn more about its advanced stuff.

Just a dabbler. Thank for your response,

Ray

Than you are all set, don't regard any popup to yearly upgrade is better than what you have. Most of the times it isn't so.

I'm constantly learning new tricks usually here from fellow forum members, and on other forums. The tricks are actually there in the Help screen if you know where to look, but often not easily found. Good forums are an indication of a healthy product.

It might help new forum members if we would try to make a clear difference in our comments between Movie Studio ( = VMS) and Movie Studio Platinum ( = VMSP). I've seen enough comments from disappointed VMS users wanting a refund.

I think it would more help when Magic would release only one version of VegasMovieStudio instead of two, to avoid disappointed users.

Like VMS Edit similar to Vegas Pro Edit.

Indeed, the same functionality without or with DVDA.

That would need to be based on the Platinum (VMSP) version, not the basic VMS version, to avoid disappointing current upgrading users.

3POINT wrote on 9/14/2019, 11:09 AM

Of course. I can only imagine that people with dollarsigns in their eyes buy the basic version. Those who looking for a serious NLE buy the Platinum version and those people don't get disappointed.

With all due respect, but I'm afraid the problem is that there are no clear, understandable function comparison tables ....
I now fell into the same trap ... ;)
I was delighted at the low price for "Movie", and then was upset by the lack of "Pro" functions in "Movie" (NATIVE functions like "mask", etc.)
