I upgraded to version 17 and my MP4 files cannot be opened on this version. I used MP4 files on version 16 but 17 does not open them. I have build 204 and I'm running PC with Windows 10 64 bit
I meant what codecs were in the mp4 files. Mp4 is just a container hence the request for media info and supplying a link to assist you obtain and post it.
When I played the video file in Windows media player it did not show the audio or video codec information so I'll post the codecs installed in the PC since I'm not well versed in this matter and I do not know how to identify codecs for individual video files outside of getting the info through media player:
Audio Codecs
TypeNameFormatBinaryVersion
ACMMicrosoft IMA ADPCM CODEC0011
ACMMicrosoft ADPCM CODEC0002
ACMMicrosoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law CODEC0007
Click on the link I gave you, several posts above, which has instructions for downloading Media Info, how to use and post the info. Without it we cannot help you. We need to know what codecs were used to create the mp4 not what codecs are on your system.
Alternatively if you have MPC-HC, a video player, installed then the media info tab from that will provide details. The media info will look something like this:

Yes, I only bought the 17th version because I thought it had better features, otherwise I would've continued with version 16, is this something I can fix or if not, please let me know how I can get a refund, thank you.
"MP4" is not a common denominator, nor is it a guarantee of compatibility in Vegas. MP4 is a wrapper, that can contains literally hundreds of combinations of sources and parameters.
It's like saying you have a "car," without stating the make, model, and year. That said, Variable Frame Rate video should not work in any Movie Studio version prior to 17 Platinum.
@Adelheid-Mathy Long shot, but in VMS 17 go to Options/Preferences and the File I/O Tab. Tick the box "Enable legacy AVC decoding". Close down VMS, restart and see if that makes any difference.
I am having the similar problem - MP4 files are not being opened. When I try to add .MP4 file into the project media I'm getting "file: unknow " error.
Using other SW, which tells "file type: HEVC" and these MP4 files can be opened. Please HELP ME!
BTW, I'm having problems w MP4 files from GoPro 9.
