Sir I downloaded and installed the VFW but I could only get Codec Configuration menju. After selecting the mandatory selection I clicked on OK but nothing happened. Nothing else appeared.
I went to VP14 and tried to find the codec but still nothing.
For now I have uploaded the video to YouTube and downloaded it again to get an MP4 file. It's not going to be in high quality but I guess my options are limited at the moment.
Being a novice isn't a nice thing. That's why I am thankful to pros like you who generously share their knowledge.
@jawad-d Ok, sure enough, the file doesn't load into VP18. I transcoded the file to an MP4, interlaced to Progressive, the Chroma Subsampling gets changed from 422 to 420 for HW encoding, 422 is retained for CPUencoding, and the audio gets changed to AAC. It then loaded fine into VP. I am using my VFR2CFR util, see download link in my signature. The util requires the ffmpeg utils to be downloaded and added to the Windows PATH, instructions in the help file.
If all else fails, you can losslessly rewrap the file (copy the videostream) to an mpg container and retain 4.2.2 chroma subsampling using the ImportAssist tool in HappyOtterScripts. Here's a screengrab of your file imported into V14 along with MediaInfo of the imported file. Note that the audio stream is added separately since it is PCM which is incompatible with the mpg container.
In reference to my original suggestion, I downloaded and installed the Matrox VFW codec, restarted Vegas Pro 14, and the file you uploaded opens without incident, except the aspect looks like a bit misflagged. Here is the screenshot. Easy-Peasy.
I am overwhelmed with emotions for your kindness and your support in helping a perfect stranger. This is proof there is still good in the world. A simple "Thank you" won't quite cut it as I feel like owe you something more substantial than mere words.
All of you will be forever in my prayers and among other things I will pray God rescues you from problems as miraculously as you have rid me of mine. Amen..
@vkmast You proved you are a real guru by pointing me in the right direction. Without your kindness I would still be knocking my head against the walls.
@Musicvid Your solution worked when I restarted my computer:. I was able to import the file seamlessly in VP14. It's nothing short of a miracle for me.
@JN-I will forever be indebted to you for breathing a new life in this thread by asking me to use Dropbox and sharing my file. You actually went as far as re-encoding the file and sending it to me! You really think "Thank you" is the right phrase here? I don't! Bless you may be a good start.
@wwaag You have guided a novice with the kindness of an adult explaining a life lesson to a child. I will try your solution should I ever get stuck again with another avi.
These few days mark my first time using forums for help and it's the people like you all that reinforce my belief in the basic goodness of humans.
I thank you all for your patience and your support you have shown me. I also pray something great happens in your lives today to pay you back for your thoughtfulness. Amen.
PS: I wanted to tag all of your advices as solution but unfortunately I had to pick one. Please don't think for a moment any solution here is less important than the other.
A slight misunderstanding here, although I did think of offering to do that, as a last resort, I was waiting for the dust to settle first. I merely modded my util to handle .avi (or any .ext) to .mp4. I hadn’t thought of needing to do this previously, only for .mov. So your “problem” spurred me on to make a necessary update.
The “Matrox” solution was always going to be the most elegant way out, once you got it to work. Take it easy and good luck with your project.
@JN- I see you've continued to update and improve your conversion utility - many thanks for this! I was also having an AVI import issue, and using the new utility, I can now import my AVI but my audio is just static/white noise. I just used copy on audio, so maybe I need to adjust that to something else but here's the source media info if interested. I'm in the process of downloading the VFW codecs to see if that also solves my issue.

@sakendrick Delighted you are getting use from the util. Definitely try converting to AAC, instead of copy, given it’s an mp3 audio file and there have been some issues with same. Hope it works, thanks for the feedback.
