Setting project video settings to match media

Mikkel-Nielsen wrote on 10/8/2022, 11:47 AM

I'm currently using Vegas Pro v19.0.643 and having a hard time matching video settings via standard template or using a custom template. When the dialog box comes up, choosing 'Yes' or 'No' makes no difference in the rendered video. I have rendered a small video without editing anything and in either case the file size is always larger than the original. When the 'Render as' dialog comes up, I did not see an option to use the 'Custom' template that was created thus the resulting video size and width default to the standard template. I must be missing something.

@Mikkel-Nielsen

"When the dialog box comes up, choosing 'Yes' or 'No' makes no difference in the rendered video."

That option only affects the pixel dimensions and frame rate in Vegas Project Properties. It doesn't change the Render Template.

First, please understand that Project settings and Render file size are entirely separate, unrelated settings. One does not directly affect the other.

Unless you have a special need, always click "Yes" and set your Render bitrate in a compatible Render Template. That is all you have to do for basic production.

You've been tag-teamed. @john_dennis and I have done this a lot over the decades here.

@Musicvid

Even though I haven't lived there for two decades, I'm still on MST.

Thank you John & Musicvid! That's kind of what I thought and would explain why, when I use a custom template with the height and width changed, it would default to the settings in a rendered template. I tried using 'Help' and the posted videos to give me more detailed information for settings and how they are utilized within the program but had no luck. I've been using a program 'Mediainfo' to analyze and compare the videos that I download and edit (cut) parts in order to make them smaller and didn't know why the rendered file size was always bigger than what I started with.

Sorry, you have to set custom render settings manually.

why the rendered file size was always bigger than what I started with.

File size is determined by Time x Bitrate=File Size. Bitrate is a function of codec compression, along with things already mentioned, so matching the quality of the original is far more important than matching the bitrate! This is fundamental.

Mikkel, if you will study theses articles, you will get up to speed on the basics faster than asking many individual questions of our volunteers.

I will 'Tag as solution' to John & Musicvid as they have led me further to understanding what was happening but I still have to figure out how to get the 'edited' video (cut parts) reducing the size of the rendered video from the original.
