Stock answer: Convert them in Handbrake first.

Or you can dig around and install an older version of Quicktime, 7.6.2 is stable. Then your MJPEG files "may" work. Noticed your audio is 16/16. Nothing you can really do about that.

LoicLeTersec wrote on 5/23/2022, 11:09 AM

Well,

What could be the simplest solution then?

Panasonic

I am really surprised to realize that Vegas is not natively able to open .mov files created with contemporary cameras (Panasonic Lumix GF2). I was told that is was a powerful software, hence I took a license. Good grief!

Musicvid wrote on 5/23/2022, 1:57 PM

It's not quite that simple. MOV is an Apple format. Vegas is a Windows competitor. I don't believe Vegas had a full set of it's own in-house codecs at that time. Does your recently purchased software, which was discontinued four years ago, have a Deprecated Features tab in its Preferences? If so, you might try there. Where did you purchase your software?

EricLNZ wrote on 5/23/2022, 6:29 PM

@LoicLeTersec I'm surprised that VMS 15 cannot open them. Whilst the last builds of VMS 17 broke the QT plug-in VMS 15 shouldn't have a problem. Do you have the Platinum or basic version?

Do you have a short mov file you could upload to a cloud service like Google Drive so we could download and try?

LoicLeTersec wrote on 5/24/2022, 11:30 AM

Eric,

the version I use is : Version 15.0 (Build 157)

Unfortunately, I have no small .mov file, but a large one you can

download from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i28iqrYW-as9HjGii68IqH-AawWdDDEO/view?usp=sharing

Thanks for your involvment

Loïc

@LoicLeTersec,
I downloaded your file and it can not play in Vegas Movie Studio and not in Vegas Pro, the latest. Because I don't want to install the old and not wanted Quicktime software, I think.
The only possibility is the use of the free app "Handbrake" to convert that file.
The coverted one plays good, even in my VMS 14.

Your file opens in VP14 and VP19 using the legacy qt7plug.dll

You may have to download Quicktime 7.7.4 to open it in your version of Movie Studio, unless it has the library included.

Or, as has been suggested a couple of times, merely convert in Handbrake. Best of luck, and welcome to the peer forum for Vegas users.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/24/2022, 5:47 PM

The earliest version I have installed is Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum build 175. The downloaded file P1040406MOV opens without problems in it. It uses "qt7plug.dll" to open it.

@LoicLeTersec Your VMS 15 Build 157 appears to be a platinum version. If you have Quicktime installed I'd expect it to open the MOV file.

vkmast wrote on 5/25/2022, 5:17 AM

I tried this file in my Movie Studio 15 Platinum build 157. Opens OK (qt7plug.dll as others noted. I still have QuickTime 7.6.9). Opens in VP 19 b 550 here as well.

The MSP 17 builds 2** are a different matter as @EricLNZ has reminded.

LoicLeTersec wrote on 5/26/2022, 5:09 AM

Eventually, I installed Handbrake to convert the MOV to M4V files and my current problem is solved. That being said, this additionnal conversion operation is a waste of time. Just to be sure, do you mean that should I have Quicktime installed, Movie Studio would natively recognize the mov format?

Thanks to all of you for your help :)

EricLNZ wrote on 5/26/2022, 5:58 AM

MOV is just a file container. It's the codecs used inside that matter. Movie Studio will open many using its own codec(s). But MOV files where the Format ID is identified as JPEG or PNG encoded video, require Quicktime. Your files are JPEG so yes if you have QT installed your Movie Studio 15 should open them and avoid you having to do a Handbrake conversion.
