vegas 12 and 15 - some file types blow up vegas

Leon-Zetekoff wrote on 8/11/2019, 10:31 AM

this happens in both of the latest versions I have of vegas.

importing most .ts and .avi files cause an exception which gets sent to Magix.

.mkv don't seem to work at all.

The .ts files are generated off my on-air tuner and I am trying to edit them. Most don't work. one does.

If I convert the .ts to a .avi it fails as well. I have a .avi that works that was created from a HD camera.

Again inconsistent. I need a way to edit these files.

Thanks leon

Medie files recorded from TV tuners often need several repair process to let them work properly. They are not meant to be used for editing.

If your transcoded AVI files fail to work in Vegas Pro it seems like you used a codec which is not (fully) supported. Which AVI codec did you use?

Some flavors of MKV now work in Vegas Pro 17, but for versions before 17 MKV is not a support file type.

Leon-Zetekoff wrote on 8/11/2019, 10:55 AM

Hi Marco...thanks for the prompt reply. Interesting. How does one repair said files? I have tried two different media conversion tools with varied results. I used the AVI/HD conversion since these are HD recorded off the air. Conversions to MPG are varied as well as is to MP4 etc. Ok on MKV. I am not prepared to plunk $200 more on another update if what I have doesnt work and don't know if it is fixed.

I also seem to get the lockups others have reported in the FB forum too.

Thanks leon

There are TS repair tools like TS-Doctor.

Musicvid wrote on 8/11/2019, 11:14 AM

1. VideoRedo will sanitize your transport streams (TS). This should always be done with broadcast recordings because they always contain stream errors that will choke a nonlinear editor, long before showing problems in a player.

2. AVI can contain any of thousands of codec combinations. Sometimes, one must download a particular codec, but of course we would need to know which one.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

DO NOT INSTALL ANY INVASIVE CODEC "PACKS" ON AN EDITING COMPUTER, NUNCA!

3. MKV, an open source container is not completely supported, for many of the same reasons as #2 above. However, Happy Otter Scripts now supports many MKV flavors, including VP9.

To help you understand the difference between codecs and containers, this tutorial and glossary may help.

For the TS, VideoRedo is the way to go. Well worth it because it removes teevee commercials. TSDoctor, as Marco suggests, will also work; however, freeware like TSMuxer will not work on transport stream errors. Vegas will neither remux nor correct stream errors.

To open your AVI in Vegas you will need to download and install the x264vfw codec from Sourceforge. Take care not to install bundled software. The fact that it is AAC audio in that file bothers me a bit. May need to demux and process that separately, or even convert in Handbrake if it still does not open

Leon-Zetekoff wrote on 8/11/2019, 12:12 PM

Hi there...I downloaded TS Doctor (trial) and on another stream it fixed Vegas still croaked. I am running TS doctor again.

ok on the AVI codec. Will go grab it. I'll post the second mediainfo shortly thanks

Musicvid wrote on 8/11/2019, 12:20 PM

I suggest you download the VideoRedo free trial. and run the Quickstream Fix option.

Leon-Zetekoff wrote on 8/11/2019, 12:39 PM

this other particular TS stream does have errors as watching it there were cable issues and the TV signal popped in and out but I would expect some of the error correction to work

Musicvid wrote on 8/11/2019, 4:04 PM

Sorry, too many dropped frames means irreparable GOPs. If your media player shows hiccups, that's a good indication of file corruption.

In a nutshell, if a pass through VRD can't fix it, likely nothing can.

I upgraded to 15...
V. 13 quit working and V. 15 shows black space where the video should appear...
I come looking for help and find an offer for V. 17. . . ????
Why would I upgrade when I can only look forward to more crashes and less production...?

You guys remind me of Casablanca products - another German bunch who wanted more
money for each request for assistance by offering everyone a new improved version before all the old problems were addressed.
Are you guys deliberately killing Vegas to convert us to your products... (sigh)

Until that time. . .

@Earl_J

I have no idea what compelled you to tack on to an active discussion with your negativity, but this is entirely inappropriate and disrespectful of the original poster.

At the very least, please start your own thread with your complaints about 5 year old Sony software and the like, preferably in the Off-Topic area. (Hint: Vegas 15 is not an upgrade). Unless you have downloaded and tested the VP17 trial and reported your results, I honestly doubt if anyone is really that interested.

Handling of errored transport streams is not version-specific; it affects them all in varying degrees.

Also, comparing Magix Vegas to another company's business model, just because they're both German, is highly prejudicial and frankly, a cheap shot. Here's a really nice book for you:
