Vegas Pro for the Precariat?

I would like the Vegas staff to weigh-in with policy and thoughts. There are videographers like me who are in the grey area between pro and enthusiast, pushing to make pro. Often it is feast or famine with more famine. To that end, I need tools I can rely on. For instance, I use DaVinci Resolve (lite) but recent experiences reveal its limitations and at some point I need to make the jump and buy a full version of something. for instance, in Resolve, there is no GPU accelerated rendering of key codecs unless you pay for the full version. When you have modest hardware, these issues become pronounced. Vegas Pro 365 or version 17 or whatever is reasonably priced when you are a pro, as is any NLE out there. But sometimes when you are in between incomes, you do not want to be stuck when it is time to re-subscribe as you wait for payments to come in. Then it occurred to me that earlier full versions like 15 or 16 are for reduced sale at places like Amazon. Since I have an older camera with older codecs, these options seem fine. If I have that software, no matter what, as long as I have a computer, I can edit. If feast time comes, perhaps I can upgrade to something newer, as long as Vegas policy allows this. I am not sure how far back upgrades are allowed, not that I would go back too far. But a good, reliable editor to use until financial stability arises is the goal. Vegas pro for the precariat?

Note that a previous perpetual version, the serial number of which has not yet been used for upgrading, is valid for "special upgrade pricing" in the MAGIX online shop found here . They sell only the latest versions.

@vkmast So if I pick up Vegas Pro version 15 or 16, I can only get an upgrade for Vegas 365, not full Vegas 17?

vkmast wrote on 5/16/2020, 12:07 AM

No, you are able to get the latest perpetual full version.

@vkmast Say if I buy version 16 tomorrow and version 18 of Vegas Pro comes out the same day, do I get a shot at upgrading to 18 or is it blown the second version 18 comes out?

As long as the serial number of a previous version has not been used for upgrading, you can get the special upgrade pricing for the latest version.

Note that upgrades are full versions and do not affect your previous version. You can have several versions installed simultaneously.

The potential and ability to work professionally and at the cutting edge of Video technology in Vegas is not version-specific, fortunately.

@vkmast Thanks, I wanted to be clear as to how the licensing system works with Vegas Pro. Vegas 365 looks great and that Sonic Foundry package it comes with is really enticing. I have great DAW's like Reaper and Harrison Mixbus, but have spoken with others who work in Sonic Foundry and they cannot give it enough praise. Having multiple versions of Vegas Pro is also good because there are some projects that take longer than others. It is good to be able to keep older projects in stable, older versions as long as needed. Other software does not give me that option. It now takes me days to figure-out workarounds to keep things free and there is a trade-off. A real pro just focuses on work.

You mean Sound Forge Audio Studio 13, "exclusively in VEGAS Pro 365".

Yes, Sound Forge, thanks. Would just be grateful for worry-free, gpu accelerated editing at this time. I guess the licenses only apply to one machine at a time? I could not use the license for a desktop and then laptop when I am 'in-the-field'...?

Please read here

But you can use the perpetual version of VEGAS Pro (14.0 and later) simultaneously on 2 devices.
