Video and audio not rendering equally

robit wrote on 4/26/2021, 8:43 AM

I don’t do any serious editing, just a few cuts, cross fades, fade in, fade out etc. Used to have Vegas pro 11 for many years, but for some reason, it wouldn’t install properly in new laptop, so upgraded to 18.

Friend asked if I would edit an old VHS grab to keep for posterity. And so my problem started.

Edited was no problem. Ended up with 42 minutes video. To render, I chose MainConcept MPEG 2>Program Stream PAL and set it to CBR.

Unfortunately, the rendered video ended up compressed to 34 minutes, while the audio did render the full 42 minutes. The video was all there but way out of sync. No idea how the video compressed so much.

Have I chosen the wrong settings to render or what other factors could have caused this?

I also tried to render to MP4 with settings MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4>Internet HD 1080 25 fps, with similar result.

Could anyone point this old man of 80 in the right path please.

I’ve digitized all my tapes many many  years ago. I would be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

Best regards,

Windows 10 Home

Version 20H2

Do you see all of the video in the 34 minutes or is the last 8 minutes blank? How did you capture the VHS? Have you tried just rendering the last 8 minutes to see if it works?

robit wrote on 4/26/2021, 9:08 AM

Yes, all the video is there and the last 8 minutes blank but audio still playing. will try to render the last 8 minutes, thanks

Edit: just tried the last 8 minutes. It played for 06:06 minutes then blank for 1:49.

there is something very wrong somewhere

Which build of VPro 18?
Which MediaInfo of the sourcefile (VHS grab)?
Which Projectsettings?

Frame rate mismatch? Provide source details, and an actual file example if you can.

You need to download and install the MediaInfo software, to get your file's detailed attributes.

Thank you. That appears to be correct

Just played the original file and found it all in sync. As soon as I put it in the timeline, the sync was out. I've no idea why. Is there a way to unlock the audio from the video? Don't see why that should done, though.

Were there major breaks in the tape while recording (in the industry called control track)? This will cause Vegas and other editing software to burp and throw off sync. If this is the case, divide the sections and resync audio, render them to an intermediate file and then bring them back into another project to complete.

I did upload pictures of mediainfo a few posts up. Not found a way to upload text so far.

@robit  No idea at this moment what is happening.
Is it possible to serve us with the download of your .veg file without sources like also @Musicvid was asking.
Deliver it on a downloadservice like dropbox or so

@robit

Download VideoReDo TV Suite 6 and run Quick Stream Fix on the source file.

https://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm

They have a liberal trial policy and you may be able to fix your file for free, though I find the program useful and have owned many versions of the software.

Alternatively, post the complete source file on a cloud share and send me a private message with the link and I'll attempt to fix it for you.

Very kind offer. Must warn you, the old videos are awful but probably brings back good memories for the old lady.

Now, how do I send private message? Ah, got it.

On the source file, the best place to see that the audio is in sync at 41:07, wher the young lad pretends to have a mic.

@robit

You're probably going to have to capture the tape again.

robit wrote on 4/26/2021, 4:01 PM

Wow, that bad? Unfortunately it wasn't me who done the capture. The file was given to me to edit if possible. My old Panasonic deck probably wouldn't be much good for capture anyway.

I really appriciate your effort to help. I'm glad I joined the forum. Many thanks again!

robit wrote on 4/28/2021, 2:10 PM

First, I’d like to say thank all who took interest in my problem. I’m happy to say that it has been resolved. I was able to obtain the software it was created on (ArcSoft Showbiz 3.5). It had no problem converting it to MP4 and remained in sync. I could then import it in VP 18 to edit as needed.
